Abstract

This article discusses the conceptual meaning of secretary through the cognition of Academic Students of Secretary in Bandung. This research was conducted in order to find out how did the secretary students describe the meaning of “secretary” through their essay writing. This research is statistic descriptive analysis, data were collected through Antconc software in order to observe the frequentative words used by the students. The node words of this research is the word secretary in which this word is used as much as 408 times by the students. Through the Cluster/N-grams, it is observed that the students tried their best efforts to describe the secretary. The theory of Semantic Cognitive especially frame semantics and image schemas proposed by Lakoff (1987); Johnson (1987); Lakoff and Turner (1989); Clausner and Croft (1999); Fillmore (1985) are used to analyze the conceptual meaning revealed from the students’s essay writing. The understanding of statistic descriptive refers to Palmer study (1933). The results show that the students mapped the secretary as the container in which it needs the container. The results can be seen through frame semantics that secretary is brain, secretary is the heart, secretary is one’s hand, secretary is one’s face, and secretary is a foundation of building.

Abstract

This research is entitled “English Language Competence of Secretary Students through Report Writing:Corpus Based Study”. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the language competence of the Secretary Students in one of popular Academy Secretary in Bandung. The Language competence is something important for students in order to understand what they say or what they write. Every language competence implies meanings. Unfortunately not all students know how to understand the meanings through language. What they have in their minds that they have to write in good grammatical patterns. They keep busy memorizing the grammatical patterns without knowing the purpose of those patterns. This research uses the Corpus Linguistics method. This newly method is quite promising and interesting to implement in this research. The definition of Corpus Linguistics is used the theories which was proposed by McEnery and Wilson (1996,2001), Sinclair et al. (2004), Lindquist (2009), McEnery and Hardie (2012). In collecting data, the writer determined the keywords then found out the implementation of those words into their writing. There are 7 key words which are used by the students frequently. The result of this research shows that the students mostly use the elements of grammar such as determiner of “the” and “a”, preposition such as “in”, “on”, “about”; yet, they rarely implement those 7 keywords with any variation. Lack of using variation collocation to the keywords causing the ambiguity to the readers.   Keywords: corpus linguistics, language competence, secretary, grammar, pattern

Abstract

This research discusses semantic types of subjects and objects of the verb lie and the phenomena of the usage of verb in American Corpus (COCA) from 1990 to 2012. This research describes the subjects who told lies frequently and the objects who received the lies from the subjects and what topics American usually had when they lied. The verb lie has two meanings, they are ‘not telling the truth’ and ‘to recline or lie down’. In this research, the verb lie refers to the meaning of ‘not telling the truth’. The corpus does not divide between those two meanings, so the writer collected and divided them manually. After that, the prospective ones were categorized based on frequency (F) in the highest, moderate, and low levels to be analyzed using descriptive-empirical method which is based on the speakers’ experiences. This was done to analyze and formulate the semantic types of the subjects of the verb ‘lie’ and the semantic types of the objects of the phrasal verb ‘lie to’ and ‘lie about’ during the period of 1990 until 2012. The theories are based on the corpus linguistics theory suggested by Firth (1957), Jones and Sinclair (1974), Sinclair et al. (2004), Cowie (1981, 1994) and Cowie et al. (1993), Stubbs (2002), Nesselhauf (2004),  McEnery and Hardie (2001, 2012). For the semantic types, this research refers to the theory of Sinclair (1991), Stubbs (2001), Dixon (2005), McEnery and Hardie (2012), and Hanks (1987, 2013). Lindquist (2009) inspired by Palmer (1933) proposes the adjacent collocation. The book published by Bureau of International Information Programs. U.S. Department of State (2005) was used in order to analyze the correlation between the phenomena of telling lies in America. The results of analysis show that the semantic types of the subjects are the subject as human, human group, human institution, and social group. The semantic types of the objects of phrasal verb of ‘lie to’ are institution, social group, and social human, human, human group. The semantic types of the objects of phrasal verb ‘lie about’ are social event, human action, human activity, and various things. Keywords: Adjacent collocation, corpus linguistics, frequency, semantic type

Abstract

This research aims to study the use of Interactive Metadiscourse in Abstract Section of English Linguistics Reseach Articles. This reseach will use metadiscourse theory from Hyland (2005) which devide metadiscourse into two, they are textual and interpersonal metadiscourse, while interactive metadiscourse is part of interpersonal metadiscourse. This research also aims to find the frequentative forms of interactive metadiscourse and describe the function of each category of interactive metadiscourse. The findings showed that there are just three sub category of interactive metadiscourse found in 15 abstracts, they are frame markers, code glosses and trasition markers. The highest markers that is found in this reseach is the transtion markers with the word “and” which are appeared 84 times in 15 abstracts.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to develop a theoretical tool to analyze humorelements in Japanese comic (manga). The authors narrow the definition of “tool” as atheoretical framework that can be used in an inductive research. Developing this tool isof importance since evaluating the quality of humor in comic is difficult and subjective, due to the inclusion of humor as a cognitive and cultural product (Hurley et al, 2011).The authors strongly emphasize that this study was a theoretical review one. Weaimed to develop a theoretical foundation pertaining to semiotic analysis in humorousmanga products. To achieve the aim, we applied qualitative content analysis to buildthe foundation inductively. The authors identify that in order to analyze humor inmanga, Berger’s theory of humor techniques (1976, 1993) can be utilized to explorecomical effect in manga. Furthermore, Wilson and Sperber’s framework (2004) canalso be used to evaluate the context of situation pictured in manga. The former theoryis imperative since it highlights the function of drawing representation to buildhumorous atmosphere, while the latter functions to decode the meaning and purposeof humor created by manga creators. To conclude, a theoretical contribution can bewithdrawn from the discussion in this study. However, to really measure Japanese’scognitive and cultural values of humor expression, further application of this analysistool needs to be established in a wider and more comprehensive set of data.

Abstract

Inquisitive semantics is defined as a framework in logic and natural language semantics. It deals with a study of meaning that leads to the process of understanding the philosophy and descriptions of Malay ways of thinking. The objective of this study is to find out the meaning of the sprout of bamboo shoot motif (Pucuk Rebung motif) as a symbol of Riau Malay and its correlation to behavior of Riau Malays. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using inquisitive semantic analysis. Inquisitive semantics combines theory, data, and nature in its analysis. The data taken are regarding with one of the motifs used as a Riau Malay symbol, the sprout of bamboo shoot motif. The data were collected by using the observation technique. The data analysis technique was carried out through 3 stages, namely script semantic analysis (to find out the meaning), cognitive semantic analysis (to find out knowledge), and inquisitive semantic analysis (to find out reasons). The research findings revealed that that the sprout of bamboo shoot motif symbolizes high commitment and optimism to achieve goals. The bamboo shoots were chosen because they are known as the batik motif with three parallel stripes and used as border design on the edge of a sarong. The motif makes a person using it confident. The findings also revealed that the Malay people are used to deal with their environment and reflect it as imagery in expressing a piece of advice. The Malay people believe that environment is the best reflection for life.
