Abstract

Inquisitive semantics is defined as a framework in logic and natural language semantics. It deals with a study of meaning that leads to the process of understanding the philosophy and descriptions of Malay ways of thinking. The objective of this study is to find out the meaning of the sprout of bamboo shoot motif (Pucuk Rebung motif) as a symbol of Riau Malay and its correlation to behavior of Riau Malays. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using inquisitive semantic analysis. Inquisitive semantics combines theory, data, and nature in its analysis. The data taken are regarding with one of the motifs used as a Riau Malay symbol, the sprout of bamboo shoot motif. The data were collected by using the observation technique. The data analysis technique was carried out through 3 stages, namely script semantic analysis (to find out the meaning), cognitive semantic analysis (to find out knowledge), and inquisitive semantic analysis (to find out reasons). The research findings revealed that that the sprout of bamboo shoot motif symbolizes high commitment and optimism to achieve goals. The bamboo shoots were chosen because they are known as the batik motif with three parallel stripes and used as border design on the edge of a sarong. The motif makes a person using it confident. The findings also revealed that the Malay people are used to deal with their environment and reflect it as imagery in expressing a piece of advice. The Malay people believe that environment is the best reflection for life.

The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative. Then, the data on sekiman ‘Lampung proverbs’ containing aquatic animals were obtained from Sasikun Kicik Lampung: Pribahasa Orang Lampung (1996) book. After that, data triangulation was done through interviews. The data collected focused on proverbs that contain elements of aquatic animals and amphibians. Based on the analysis, researchers found structural metaphors with conceptual meanings of wandering, ability, gossip, thoroughness, service, help, imposing will, stupidity, disrespect, vanity, gluttony, carelessness, and stubbornness. Through those conceptual meanings, researchers reveal identity image schemes of bad manners, identity image scheme to the contribution, and identity image scheme to uselessness. Abstract

The widespread use of metaphors in medical therapy dialogues and the heightened mental health issue in South Korea made researchers want to study further how the unique forms of metaphors are produced, one of which is depression. This study aims to find out what conceptualizations of depressive metaphors are produced in mental health therapy dialogs between the writer and his psychiatrist which are described in the Korean essay book 죽고 싶지만 떡볶이는 먹고 싶어 (Jukkko Sipjjiman Ttokppokkineun Mokko Sipo) 'I Want to Die But I Want to Eat Tteokbokki ' by Baek Se-Hee with a study of cognitive semantics. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the method of collecting data using listening and note taking techniques. The data analysis method used in this study is Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (MIPVU) procedure. Data presentation methods used are formal and informal methods. As a result, there are four conceptual metaphors of depression that are formed, namely DEPRESSION IS A PRISON, DEPRESSION IS A SPINNING WHEEL, DEPRESSION IS DARKNESS, and DEPRESSION IS WAR. These four conceptualizations are formed from various metaphorical expressions expressed by the author and his psychiatrist regarding the depression experienced by the writer.
