Abstract

Social distancing policy in Indonesia is implemented to flatten the COVID-19 curve and regulated under West Java Governor regulation number 30 of 2020 regarding social distancing guidance and Governor Decree number 443/Kep240-Hukham/2020 regarding social distancing implementation in Bandung, Cimahi, Bandung Regency, West Bandung Regency, and Sumedang Regency. However, the policy implementation has crippled the economy of Bandung, and the tourism industry has been hit hard. Bandung Culture and Tourism Agency (Disparbud) recorded a significant decline in Bandung visitor arrival, falling from 4,8 million to 1,2 million visitors in 2020. In light of this issue, it is crucial to take practical measures to stimulate Bandung tourism industry during the pandemic while following the social distancing protocols. Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) Community Service, integrated with Student Fieldwork (KKN 2020/2021), was conducted to address the issue. Students from various faculties in Unpad and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences lecturers collaborated with micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) in Bandung to promote digital marketing and communication strategies. The students worked together with MSME practitioners to produce digital content, such as posters and videos, to promote their products and services.

Abstract

The researchers convince that the essence of proper names is one of civilization of cultural sustainability. Therefore, we investigated the Sundanese traditional cuisine’s proper names in this article to discuss how proper names are important to be documented well in our inherent traditional cuisine. The proper names are the data collected from the restaurants located in Sukabumi, Garut, and Bandung. The research method applied is a qualitative one. Through a Cognitive Semantic study, the researchers will investigate the phonological sounds and morphological processes that appeared in the Sundanese cuisine’s proper names using conceptualization in line with Cognitive Semantics. Cognitive understanding uses four guiding principles: conceptual structure is embodied, the semantic structure is conceptual structure, meaning representation is encyclopedic, and meaning construction is conceptualization (Evans, Bergen, and Zinken, 2007). The research revealed that the two and three vocal sound combinations appear in the Sundanese food proper names. Furthermore, the acronym also happens in this food's proper names, considering the sound that could produce the exciting names. The name comes from Javanese, but Sundanese people add the morpheme into the first syllables since Sundanese people are familiar with three syllables (Djajasudarma, 2013). Sundanese people name their food based on how the body reacts to a specific action. The form of Sundanese food’s proper name comes from the vocal sounds, which experience a morphemic process—the vocal sounds result in the rhyme. The consonant also tends to form a conceptual meaning that needs further discussion.

Abstract

This descriptive research discusses the use of discourse markers in a diplomatic setting between the governments of Indonesia and Australia during a Joint Press Conference between Indonesia-Australia Foreign and Defence Ministers. The particular aims of this research are to identify and analyze forms of discourse markers employed by the representatives of each government and describe the most frequent discourse markers used by these representatives. The data were collected from the transcript of the Joint Press Conference between Indonesia and Australia Foreign and Defence Ministers (2+2) Dialogue. The data are classified based on the typology of discourse markers and analyzed to identify their function within the diplomatic discourse. The data are input into the AntConc corpus analysis toolkit for analysis. The results show that the Foreign and Defence Ministers of Indonesia employed three forms of discourse markers, namely textual discourse marker, interpersonal discourse marker, and cognitive discourse marker, whereas the Foreign and Defence Ministers of Australia only applied textual discourse marker and cognitive discourse marker. Both representatives employed textual discourse markers more frequently than other forms of discourse markers. Discourse markers partially control how meaning is constructed by showing turns between speakers, joining concepts, displaying attitude, and finally, controlling communication. By understanding the discourse markers in ministerial dialogues, spectators can learn to find clues in the change of direction in their talks to better understand the conversation that affects the policies and citizens of both countries involved.

Abstract

Besides the Sundanese ethnic group as the largest ethnic group in the city of Bandung, there is also the Chinese ethnic group. To strengthen tolerance and enhance mutual understanding and appreciation between these two ethnic groups, a Community Service Activity (PPM) was conducted in the form of a Moon Festival with the theme "Bright Moonlight Brings Happiness". This activity was chosen because both Sundanese and Chinese cultures have similarities in their views of the moon. It is this similar perspective that underpins the PPM activity through collaboration with various Sundanese and Chinese communities. The Moon Festival was carried out in collaboration with Yayasan Dana Sosial Priangan (YDSP) Bandung, which already has the necessary assets for the implementation of this activity. PPM was carried out through four stages: discover, design, define, and reflect. The core of the PPM activity is the Moon Festival, consisting of a series of events held on September 29, 2023, in YDSP Hall. During this Moon Festival, there were presentations on the meaning of the moon from the perspectives of the Sundanese and Chinese ethnic groups, artistic performances including singing, dancing, musical poetry, and drama, all themed around the moon. In this activity, both the Sundanese and Chinese communities get to know each other and learn about the moon from different cultural perspectives, thus achieving the goal of strengthening interaction between Sundanese and Chinese cultures.

Abstract

There is a scarcity of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) studies on the representation of social actors in news media, thus this study addressed this research gap by analysing the way news represented the French President Emmanuel Macron, regarding his controversial support of Samuel Paty, a history teacher in France who was murdered because he showed a cartoon of Prophet Muhammad in his class. This research aims to see the representation of Emmanuel Macron from the perspective of the French media, The Connexion France, which published their news in English language online to reach world-wide audience. Four articles of the news were purposively selected for this CDA study, which were published from October 18 until November 1, 2020. The French President’s representation was analysed with the nomination and predication strategies. Results showed that the Connexion France uses four nomination strategies to refer Emmanuel Macron. The professional anthroponyms refer to Emmanual Macron as “the President”, proper names as “Emmanuel Macron” to be the centre of the discourse, synecdoche as “Emmanuel Macron”, and deixis as “he” to avoid repetition the subject of the text. Two predication strategies were also used, the explicit predicate of how the President “has promised” action against Islamists and presupposition from the way the news linked pictures of boycotted French supermarket products with the President. This research provides a take on fresh news with CDA and can beneficial for the students who learn English language by showing how the media uses language for political figures.
