Abstract

The lack of research on metonymy and the number of Korean dramas raise issues that occur in South Korea make researchers want to study more deeply about how the conceptualization of metonymy is shown in an issue in Korea through drama. This study aims to identify and describe what conceptual metonymy is used and how to map the conceptual metonymy shown in the drama “The Glory” using cognitive semantic studies. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a data collection method of listening and note taking techniques as well as MIPVU (Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit) procedures developed for metonymy by Berri and Bregant (2015) as a data analysis method. The simak catat technique is used to see and record the use of conceptual metonymy contained in the drama “The Glory”. The method of presenting the data used is formal and informal methods because the data contained in this study is presented in the form of tables and descriptive analyses regarding conceptual metonymy. The findings obtained in this study were in the form of 23 data of conceptual metonymy found which included 12 data of WHOLE FOR PART metonymy and 11 data of PART FOR WHOLE metonymy. In the drama “The Glory” conceptual metonymy is used to name events that occur, mention the use of terms, mention the characteristics and circumstances of a person, and substitute the mention of objects or place.

Abstract

The widespread use of metaphors in medical therapy dialogues and the heightened mental health issue in South Korea made researchers want to study further how the unique forms of metaphors are produced, one of which is depression. This study aims to find out what conceptualizations of depressive metaphors are produced in mental health therapy dialogs between the writer and his psychiatrist which are described in the Korean essay book 죽고 싶지만 떡볶이는 먹고 싶어 (Jukkko Sipjjiman Ttokppokkineun Mokko Sipo) 'I Want to Die But I Want to Eat Tteokbokki ' by Baek Se-Hee with a study of cognitive semantics. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the method of collecting data using listening and note taking techniques. The data analysis method used in this study is Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (MIPVU) procedure. Data presentation methods used are formal and informal methods. As a result, there are four conceptual metaphors of depression that are formed, namely DEPRESSION IS A PRISON, DEPRESSION IS A SPINNING WHEEL, DEPRESSION IS DARKNESS, and DEPRESSION IS WAR. These four conceptualizations are formed from various metaphorical expressions expressed by the author and his psychiatrist regarding the depression experienced by the writer.

Abstract

Abstract

The word eating can produce positive meaning as it is closely tied to human needs. This term is also intricately linked to eating habits. In Javanese society, this term serves to satisfy basic human needs and plays a pivotal role in defining social etiquette. Eating expressions have a broader meaning when examined from a dysphemistic perspective within cognitive semantics. This study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology, with data collection covering interviews, active listening, observation, and note-taking. The data were then analyzed using image schemas and conceptual meaning. The study found that the eating expressions underwent dysphemism in Javanese such as lambene ngemrus wae ket mau! (your mouth keeps eating!), wes, ngrokoti koyo tikus! (you eat like a rat!), Gimin esuk-esuk wis nguntal (Gimin ate too early this morning), wah, yahene wis nyekek ping pindho (you have eaten twice by this time), nyo, badhogen kabeh, aku rasah dingengehi (eat all the food and dont bother to spare for me), panganan kok di gaglak (how come you gulping the food?), and menungso kok gragas?! (how on earth could you only eat?!). Moreover, the study identified conceptual metaphors, comprising six structural metaphors and two orientational metaphors. Structural metaphors arise from systematic relationships observed in daily experiences, whereas orientational metaphors impart spatial direction, including the recognition of top-down image schemes, part-whole image schemes, existence image schemes, and merging image schemes.

Abstract

Recent technologies can provide new opportunities for the acquiring language and literacy skills for students. As we move into the 21st century, students learn how to become good speakers and writers of digital texts. Phonetics skill is important to be trained in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom. Learning phonetics helps recognize familiar and unfamiliar sounds, improves pronunciation skills, and develops in words and sound recognition. By focusing on Pronunciation and phonetic accuracy, learners can improve their listening skills and become better at recognizing and decoding English sounds. This, in turn, improves their understanding of spoken English and contributes to raising their overall language proficiency. In this rapid development of digital technology, teachers should be creative to provide impactful and meaningful learning. Al-Azhar Cairo Bandung Islamic Secondary School is a private school in Bandung that elaborate the learning and teaching process through iPad class. The goal of this paper is to verify student satisfaction based on the improvement of student’s phonetics skills and digital literacy through the use of the Ar Makr application. It is an iPad application that shows Augmented Reality (AR) that allows users to create virtual objects using their own sketches and photos, directly placing them in the environment, and enhance the creativity of visualization animation to motivate digital literacy. The qualitative method is used in this research. To accomplish this research goal, observation, questionnaires, and interview session was conducted with the students in Al-Azhar Cairo Bandung Islamic Secondary School. The result showed that using the Ar Makr application is improving learning phonetics and building motivation in digital literacy through providing attractive and effective learning andenhancing entertainment for students. These apps arealso helping to promote more active learning in the EFL classroom.

Abstract

This research investigated the Sundanese traditional cuisine proper names. The purpose of this research is to find out how Sundanese people name their food through the mental lexicon that appeared in the Sundanese traditional cuisine proper name. The proper cuisine names are collected from Sukabumi, Garut, and Bandung restaurants. The research method applied is a qualitative one. Through a Cognitive Linguistic study, the researchers investigated the phonological sounds and morphological processes that appeared in the Sundanese cuisine proper names. The research revealed that the two and three-vowel sound combinations appear in the proper Sundanese food names through conceptualization in cognitive linguistics. Furthermore, the acronym also happens in this food’s proper names, considering the sound that could produce the exciting names. The research results show that names from the Javanese region experience changes. Sundanese people add the morpheme into the first syllables since Sundanese people are not familiar with two syllables. To conclude, Sundanese people name their food based on how the body reacts to a specification. The form of Sundanese food’s proper name comes from the vowel sounds, which experience a morphemic process—the vocal sounds result in the rhyme. The consonant also tends to form a conceptual meaning that needs further discussion. The resulting research is also beneficial for learning the Sundanese language.

Abstract

Mots-clés : paysage linguistique, analyse multimodale, France, Emily in Paris.

Abstract

News about the election, particularly the 2024 presidential election, is currently becoming a hot topic, especially after the presence of three candidates from each political party. Understanding political conceptual metaphors is important because it can be useful for language research and teaching by providing new insights, it can also expand public knowledge about political situations through metaphors. The political parties promoting the candidates are Partai Demokrasi Indonesia (PDI) Perjuangan, Partai Nasional Demokrat (Nasdem), and Partai Gerakan Indonesia Raya (Gerindra). The three candidates supported by these parties are Ganjar Pranowo, Anies Baswedan, and Prabowo Subianto. Current information related to the presidential election is conveyed by media crews through online news sites, including Kompas.com. Previous studies have largely overlooked the 2024 presidential election and often did not employ lexical semantic theory in analyzing political metaphors, creating a gap that this research aims to fill. This research aims to describe the political concepts built through conceptual metaphors in the 2024 presidential election. The method of this research is descriptive-qualitative. Collecting data using note-taking techniques. The referential method was used to analyze data. The data sources from newspapers uploaded by Kompas.com online news sites in the period from June 2023 to January 2024. The results of the research show that there are five metaphorical concepts “Politics is a Plan”, “Politics is a Fight”, “Politics is a Defense”, “Politics is a Game”, and “Politics is a Marriage”.
