Abstract

This study will present Hamka’s critique of the practice of venerating graves in the Al-Azhar commentary, and then analyse this critique to examine Hamka’s position as a reformist using Hans Georg Gadamer’s theory of Historically Effected Consciousness. The aim of this study is to describe Hamka’s critique of the practice of venerating sacred graves in Al-Azhar’s exegesis and to analyse his historical influence as a reformist. This study employs a qualitative research method in the form of library research. The results of this study indicate that Hamka’s critique of the practice of venerating sacred graves can be divided into three categories: theological critique, epistemological critique, and sociological critique. Hamka’s criticism of the practice of venerating sacred tombs, when analysed through Hans Georg Gadamer’s theory of Historically Effected Consciousness, reflects Hamka’s.

Abstract

The Qur’an is a guide in all aspects of life. Not only for Muslims, but for all mankind, as reflected in the expression of Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin. One of the aspects contained in the verses of the Qur’an as a guide is the theme of human rights. Da'wah to raise human awareness about the important meaning of respect for human rights is reflected in the pattern of human rights education in the Qur'an. The definition of the pattern of human rights education in the Qur’an is a number of Qur’anic verses that talk about human rights and how the Qur’an invites people to respect those human rights.

Abstract

The growing social inequality in the modern era signifies that the global economic system is losing its moral compass. The interest based capitalist system places profit above justice. This study seeks to reinterpret the Quranic verses on riba in a more contextual and humanistic manner, not merely as a legal-formal prohibition, but as a moral call to restructure economic relations toward greater justice. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive method and a thematic (maudhu‘i) approach to verses such as QS. Al-Baqarah [2]: 275–279, Ali Imran [3]: 130, and Ar-Rum [30]: 39 to trace the ethical meanings behind the sacred text. The findings reveal that the Qur’an’s critique of riba is, in essence, a critique of exploitative economic systems both classical and modern. Conversely, values such as zakat, infaq, and mudharabah offer a more just economic path that fosters solidarity and upholds humanity. Thus, this study affirms that the Quranic ethics on riba can serve as an alternative foundation for building an economically and morally dignified system one that embraces progress and innovation without compromising ethical integrity. What the modern world needs is not merely an interest-free system, but an economic civilization imbued with empathy and oriented toward collective well-being.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), affecting people of all ages globally. In Indonesia, the TB incidence in 2021 was 354 per 100,000 population, with an estimated mortality rate of 52 per 100,000. In South Sulawesi, TB cases rose to 68.8% in 2022 from a 48.3% case detection rate in 2021. This study aimed to assess the association between smoking exposure, BCG vaccination history, and TB contact history with pulmonary TB incidence among women of reproductive age at BBKPM Makassar in 2023. Using a cross-sectional quantitative approach, 354 samples were selected from 3,063 TB cases through purposive sampling. Data were collected from medical records of women aged 15–45 years with new pulmonary TB diagnoses and complete documentation. Chi-square analysis showed significant associations for smoking (p = 0.037), BCG history (p = 0.034), and TB contact (p = 0.004). The study concludes that these factors are significantly related to pulmonary TB in reproductive-age women.

Abstract

Islam is a prophetic religion revealed to promote social transformation and address fundamental social problems in human life. One of its essential roles is offering solutions to socio-economic inequality through philanthropic instruments. Zakat, as a compulsory religious obligation, serves not only as an act of worship but also as a strategic mechanism for economic development and social welfare. This article formulates two main research questions: first, what social spirit is embedded in Qur’anic verses related to zakat-based philanthropy; and second, how this social spirit can be developed through effective financial management. Employing a social interpretation approach as the analytical framework, this study identifies several key findings. Thematically, Qur’anic verses on zakat and philanthropy emphasize significant concepts such as yunfiqu amwālahum (QS. al-Baqarah: 261), tukhfūhā al-fuqarā’ (QS. al-Baqarah: 271), and fī amwālihim ḥaqqun (QS. al-Dhāriyāt: 19). These verses convey core social messages of the Qur’an, including social concern, ethical conduct, and socio-moral responsibility toward vulnerable groups. Moreover, zakat, infaq, and alms are directed toward productive and sustainable activities to foster economic independence among the poor. This objective is supported through strengthened financial management, encompassing financial literacy for beneficiaries, empowerment-based zakat governance, and continuous assistance to enhance economic resilience and adaptability.

Abstract

This article examines the urgency of the Living Qur'an in the lives of contemporary Muslim communities. The Living Qur'an is understood as a socio-religious phenomenon in which the Qur'an is not merely present as a written text but is actively lived, practiced, and functions across various aspects of community life. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach and library research, this study analyzes the significance of the Living Qur'an from three primary dimensions: spiritual, social, and cultural. The findings indicate that the Living Qur'an plays a fundamental and irreplaceable role in Muslim society. Spiritually, it serves as a source of spiritual strength and psychological well-being. Socially, it functions as a unifying force that strengthens social cohesion and facilitates the intergenerational transmission of moral values. Culturally, the Living Qur'an represents both a marker of cultural identity and a safeguard for religious and ethical values amid the challenges of globalization. In the contemporary era, the Living Qur'an faces challenges posed by modernization and secularization while simultaneously embracing new opportunities through digital media. This article concludes that the integrative and multidisciplinary revitalization of the Living Qur'an is essential for fostering a Muslim society that is characterized by strong moral values, civility, and competitiveness.
