Abstract

Teachers’ Questioning Strategies to Promote Students’ Engagement in EFL Classroom: The case of Islamic Boarding Schools in Aceh, Indonesia. Objective: The present study aims to investigate the use of questioning strategies during classroom interaction. There have been numerous studies on questioning strategies, however, Islamic boarding schools have received less attention. Method; There were N=106 students, Aged 14-16 years as students at Islamic boarding schools in Aceh, and English teachers (N=5) participated in this study selected through purposive sampling, documentation, observation, and interview are triangulation of instruments. The data were analyzed by using the descriptive qualitative form by Marzano's Observational Protocol Sheet (2013). Findings: The findings revealed that teacher mostly employs questioning strategies to check the students' knowledge and comprehension in the learning process by using many kinds of questions. Teachers used the questioning strategy through interview results to engage students and monitor the extent to which they met the learning indicators. Furthermore, when it happened to come to promoting children's critical thinking, teachers were ineffective because the questions were yes/no questions. In conclusion; it explicitly means that this strategy is interactive and effective and also can be a beneficial way to the students and teacher in the classroom interaction at school. Keywords: questioning strategies, Islamic boarding school, classroom interaction.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i1.202207

Abstract

Literature is a product of thoughts, ideas, concepts, and also imagination which are the reflection of the life around the author. Poetry as one type of literary work is arguably unique and different compared to other types of literary works. This is because of the figurative language that surrounds a poem that creates the meaning implied in the literal meaning. This research is intended to find out what kind of figurative language is used in Robert Frost's selected poems based on Perrine’s theory, so that we can find out the implicit meaning of the two poems. The whole process is carried out using the desk observation research method, where primary data and secondary data are collected to understand the entire research object. The results of the analysis process show that Robert Frost uses metaphor, symbol, personification, and simile in the poem “The Road Not Taken”. Whereas in the poem “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”, Frost uses metaphor, symbol, personification, and hyperbole. From these results, the implied meaning of the two poems is revealed. Where “The Road Not Taken” describes Individualism and its influence on the “decision making” process, while “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” illustrates the level of self-consistency. Both of these poems describe the culture of American society in general.

Abstract

The title of this thesis is The Use of Animation Movie (Storks) to Enhancing Students’ Speaking Performance (A Collaborative Classroom Action Research to the First Year Students of SMAN 1 Pandrah). From the title above, the researcher found that the students did not know what the teacher said in English learning, the students were lack of vocabulary, the students did not look active in teaching speaking, and the teacher always used Indonesian language to make them understand about the explanation of English material. So, the researcher put two problems of this research with the question as follows: first, How does the use of animation movie (storks) as media enhance the students speaking performance? Second, How does the students respond in implementing of animation movie (storks) as media in teaching students’ speaking performance?. Based on the research problems, the purposes of this research were: first, to find out the use of animation movie (storks) as media enhance the students speaking performance. Second, to find out the students’ response in implementing of animation movie (storks) as media in students speaking performance. This research was a collaborative classroom action research that was done in two cycles. The research subject was the first year students of class VII/1 of SAPN 1 Pandrah. The sample of this research was 16 students. The data were collected through the field note, speaking test, students’ observation checklist, the teacher’s observation checklist, and questionnaire. The data were analyzed through the descriptive qualitative research. The researches were conducted into two cycles, the procedures of action research: planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The first cycle consisted of two meetings, and the second cycle consisted of two meetings. After the researcher was done (cycle I and cycle II) the students’ means score increased from 68 in cycle I be came 76 in cycle II. The finding of the research also showed that the use of animation movie (storks) as media can improve the students’ speaking performance in storytelling, it was showed from the result of students’ mastery speaking test in each cycle which the action implemented.

Abstract

The title of this research is increasing students’ ability in reading comprehension through pqrst strategy in lesson study. The objective of this research is: To describe the students’ achievement in reading comprehension by using PQRST strategy at SMAN Peusangan and to know the students’ respond through prediction strategy to the reading comprehension in recount text of grade ten students of SMA N 1 Peusangan. The data collected through the observation sheet, text, and test. This research uses lesson study in the teaching process and this research was done in two meeting. The research subject was the first year students of SMA N 1 Peusangan. The sample of this resarch was were 21 students. The data was collected through the observation sheet, text, and test.The data was analyzed through Quantitative Recount Text in conducting the research. The procedure of lesston study of lesson study: Plan, Do, See. After the researcher was done all the the steps of action the result of students’ means score for the first meeting was 66,90 it does not meets the criteria, then the researcher decide to continue for the second meeting the students’ score was 85 and it meets the criteria of SMA N 1 Peusangan. The finding of the researcher also showed that PQRST Strategy in Lesson Study model can icreas the students’ reading comprehension, it was showed from the result of students mastery recoun text. The result of this study indicate that reading can add insight and new vocabulary, because by reading students would get a lot of new words that were not yet know, therefore reading be able to increase students’ vocabulary and the steps of the PQRST strategy can help students understand the text more easly bisides that students also mindset broad and sharp.

Abstract

This research aims to see whether the mean score of XI students of SMA Negeri 3 Bireuen who taught using Instagram media to master vocabulary in writing recount texts got a higher score than the mean score of students who used conventional methods. The methodology of this research was a quasi-experimental (nonequivalent control group) design. The instrument used in this research was an achievement test. The data was analyzed quantitatively using the SPSS Statistics Output, such as Normality Test, homogeny test, and Independent-Sample T-test. Using Instagram as media for the student's vocabulary mastery in writing recount text is effective. It can be seen from the average score of the control and experimental classes, where the average value of the control class is 47.65 while the average value of the experimental class is 77.94. That way, there is a difference between the two classes, where the experimental class taught using Instagram has a higher value than the control class taught using the convection method. From the data analysis, the result of the Independent Sample T-test is 0.000 < 0.05, so it can be concluded that there is a difference in the average student learning outcomes between the learning model that uses Instagram media and the conventional learning model. Thus, the research alternative hypotheses (Ha) are accepted, and the null hypotheses (Ho) are rejected. Then, the effectiveness of the media Instagram towards the students' vocabulary mastery in writing recount text is effective.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan memperoleh informasi tentang implementasi kebijakan Merdeka Belajar pada sekolah penggerak di Kelompok Kerja Kepala Sekolah di Kecamatan Nisam Kabupaten Aceh Utara. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa implementasi kebijakan Merdeka Belajar di sekolah penggerak, yaitu SDN 6 Nisam dan SDN 2 Banda Baro, telah dilaksanakan sesuai dengan ketentuan pemerintah. Meskipun masih terdapat beberapa kekurangan dan kendala dalam pelaksanaannya, implementasi kurikulum Merdeka Belajar di sekolah penggerak telah berjalan secara optimal. Kunci keberhasilan penerapan kurikulum Merdeka Belajar di sekolah penggerak adalah adanya kemauan dari kepala sekolah dan guru untuk melakukan perubahan. Kepala sekolah harus mampu mengubah mindset sumber daya manusia di sekolah agar siap melaksanakan perubahan. Salah satu kendala yang dihadapi guru adalah harus menyiapkan pembelajaran yang kreatif, inovatif, dan menantang setiap hari. Keterlibatan guru dalam pengembangan kurikulum juga penting dilakukan untuk menyesuaikan isi kurikulum dengan kebutuhan siswa.

Abstract

This study describes the local wisdom of Aceh's traditional house architecture and the potential for developing cultural tourism objects. This research method uses a qualitative approach. The research location is Awe Geutah Village, Peusangan Siblah Krueng District, Bireuen District, Aceh Province. The research informants are key informants, namely the managers of Acehnese traditional houses. This study also uses the principles of documentation, inventory, and tourism approaches”data analysis using data reduction, data display, and data reduction. The research results and the research update are the design of the Teungku Chik Awe Geutah Aceh traditional house model. This traditional Aceh house was built around the XIII century and has local wisdom in building construction that is sturdy and earthquake-resistant. The house plan consists of 3 parts: the front, middle, and rear. Each element in the traditional Aceh house has a philosophical meaning and a way of life for the people of Aceh. The potential for developing traditional Aceh houses is viewed from facilities and infrastructure, accommodation, accessibility, transportation, security, and hospitality. Keywords: Architecture, Local Wisdom, Cultural Tourism, Aceh House
