Abstract

Abstract

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the coronavirus a global emergency transmitted by droplets. Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks can help lower the  viral infection risk. However, prolonged use of PPE can cause skin lesions and aggravate acne. Acne that develops because of the usage of masks is called mask acne (maskne). Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of health workers regarding the use of face masks can help minimize the occurrence of maskne. This study aimed to assess the relationship between knowledge, attitude ,and practices of the use of face masks with  mask acne among health workers in general hospitals in Mataram City, Indonesia. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional analytic observational study involving health workers from type b and c general hospitals in the city of Mataram, specifically the West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Hospital and the Mataram University Hospital. Primary data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitude, and practice of using masks, then analyzed using Lambda test. Results: In total, 104 respondents were included, of whom 39.4% (n=41) had good knowledge, 35.6% (n=37) had a good attitude towards the use of masks, and 25.0% (n=26) had good practice. Interestingly, 42.3% (n=44) had experienced maskne. Lambda test showed that a relationship between knowledge, attitude, and practices towards the usage of masks and the incidence of maskne (p = 0.014; p = 0.000; p = 0.006).Conclusion: There is a relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and practice of health workers regarding the usage of masks with the prevalence of mask acne at the general hospitals type b and c in the Mataram City. This study implies  is that health workers can prevent the occurrence of mask acne, which can make the work of health workers more difficult.

Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is transmitted from human to human and primarily via the respiratory route; hence, wearing a mask is the first step in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Behind the benefits of these masks are adverse consequences on the skin, such as lesions and acne. This study aims to ascertain the relationship between students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the use of masks on the occurrence of maskne. This research is a cross-sectional analytic observational study. The research subjects were 100 students from the Universitas Mataram's 2018 class, from November 2020 to January 2022, using a stratified random sampling technique—data collection from primary data via a Google Form. Data analysis was carried out by testing the lambda hypothesis. In this study, 38% (n=38) of the respondents reported maskne, while 62% (n=62) reported not maskne. Among the respondents who reported not maskne, the majority mentioned having good knowledge, positive attitudes, and good practice. The lambda hypothesis analysis indicates significant correlations between students' knowledge (p=0.004), attitudes (p=0.001), and practices (p=0.006) regarding mask usage and the occurrence of maskne. A relationship exists between students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding mask usage and maskne occurrences.

Abstract

Various studies have been widely published regarding the efficacy and adverse effects of facial care products with research populations from adolescent to young adults. However, it is necessary to first identify the characteristics of this parameters in the local population. The purpose of this study is to obtain an overview of the characteristics of the biophysical parameters of facial skin in a population of teenagers and young adults who tend to be active indoors, especially UNRAM medical students. This was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional approach. Participants filled out questionnaires and followed procedures for examining facial skin biophysical parameters. The results of this study showed that from 147 participants, the average TEWL level was 8,99 g/h/m2; mean degree of erythema was 262,5; the average melanin index was 192,1 and the average sebum level was 192,1. Statistical analysis found that there was an association between gender and all facial skin biophysical parameters, a relationship between age and sebum levels and a relationship between daily activities in an air-conditioned room and the degree of erythema. With the data presented in this study, research related to facial skin biophysical parameters in similar populations can be developed further.

Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammation of the skin’s pilosebaceous unit, caused by oxidative stress due to reactive oxygen species (ROS) release. Oxidative stress conditions can be treated using natural antioxidants, namely ashitaba (Angelica keiskei). In contrast to previous studies that tested column chromatography fraction of the macerated ethanol extract, this study examined the liquid-liquid partition fraction of 80% methanol sonicated extract of Ashitaba herb. This study aims to determine the antiradical activity of various fractions of Ashitaba herb extract against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhidrazyl (DPPH) free radicals. 80% methanol extract of the Ashitaba herb was fractionated using chloroform, ethyl acetate, and water solvents. Each ashitaba herb fraction was identified for the content of flavonoids and phenolic compounds and the antiradical DPPH activity was tested with ascorbic acid standard using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The IC50 value of each fraction was statistically analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and Posthoc Tukey. The results of phytochemical identification showed that ashitaba herb fractions positively contain flavonoids and phenolics. Antiradical activity of the chloroform, ethyl acetate, and water fractions against DPPH was indicated by IC50 values of 164.22±5.68 ppm (moderate); 8.70±0.12 ppm (very strong); and 243.60±8.14 ppm (weak). Statistically, each ashitaba herb fraction differed significantly from ascorbic acid (IC50 2.37±0.05 ppm). The ethyl acetate fraction has the strongest antioxidant activity and is in the same category of antioxidant strength as the ascorbic acid standard.

Abstract

Abstract

The increase in the use of chemical fertilizers on agricultural land has occurred more rapidly since the green revolution era. The use of chemical fertilizers is increasingly worrying because it has a huge impact on the survival of living things. The use of organic fertilizers such as compost is an alternative that can be selected to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. Compost is produced from a mixture of organic materials, both organic matter derived from livestock and organic matter from plants. The compost process technology needs to be disseminated to the community, especially farmers. This activity aims to increase the technological knowledge capacity of members of farmer/livestock groups in utilizing cattle feces waste. Technology dissemination activities were carried out at the “Balumbungan” Farmer/Livestock Group in Bontonompo Village, Bontonompo District, Gowa Regency. The application of local microorganisms (LoM) from natural materials (rice waste) as a decomposer has been applied in the process of making compost made from cow feces combined with laying hen feces. Rice waste contains carbohydrates which are a good source of energy for the survival of microorganisms. Utilization of MoL as a decomposer in the fermentation process of organic materials is an attempt to utilize natural materials that have been wasted so far. Rice waste is a good growth medium for several types of bacteria and fungi that are able to degrade organic compounds into nutrients that are important for plants.
