Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to find out the second year students’ ability and the mistakes often done by the students in constructing compound sentences at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. The sample of this research was 22 NK1-2017 students of 214 second year students at English Department. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling. The instrument used was a grammar test consisting of 30 items about compound sentences. The students’ answers were used as the source of the data analyzed. The data was analyzed based on the theory adapted from LeBlanc (2008) and graded based on Peraturan Akademik Universitas Negeri Padang (2015). Based on the findings, it was found that the second year students’ ability in constructing compound sentences was fairly good. Moreover, it was found that the most frequent mistake often done by the students was about the tense and conjugation of verbs which occurred 222 times (25.5%) from 872 mistakes found. Based on those findings, it can be concluded that the students quite understand how to construct compound sentences. Moreover, the mistakes related to the tense and conjugation of verbs occurred because the sentence written by the students had clauses containing verbs that were not in the correct tense, inappropriately singular/ plural, and otherwise do not agree with the subject.

Abstract

Abstrak Makalah ini memaparkan kemampuan menulis siswa dengan menggunakan website My StoryMaker pada siswa sekolah menengah pertama. Pengajaran menulis teks pada siswa menengah pertama merupakan suatu pembelajaran yang sulit dalam menciptakan ide dan kurangnya motivasi serta kreativitas untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis. Dalam makalah ini penulis mengajarkan menulis menggunakan website. My StoryMaker merupakan salah satu website yang dapat memotivasi,menginspirasi dalam pengajaran menulis teks. Website ini menyediakan gambar- gambar yang menarik, yang bisa dipilih siswa sesuai topik yang dipelajari. Website ini cocok digunakan dalam menulis deskriptif teks untuk siswa menengah pertama. Langkah-langkah dalam pengajaran menulis yaitu preparation, pre-teaching, whilst-teaching dan post-teaching. Pada preparation guru mempersiapkan materi, media ajar yang akan digunakan, dan rencana pengajaran. Pada pre-teaching guru mengaktifkan latar belakang pengetahuan siswa dengan memberikan ilustrasi yang sesuai dengan materi yang akan diajarkan. Pada whilst-teaching guru menjelaskan struktur teks yang digunakan dalam penulisan teks deskriptif melalui salah satu teks dalam digital writing My StoryMaker tersebut,kemudian siswa memilih gambar dalam My StoryMaker berdasarkan arahan guru. Lalu siswa menuliskan dalam bentuk paragraf di website. Pada post-teaching guru menyimpulkan pelajaran Apabila siswa telah menulis menggunakan aplikasi ini, siswa bisa langsung mencetak hasil menulisnya dalam bentuk file pdf dan juga siswa bisa langsung mengirim email ke guru sehingga guru bisa mengoreksi hasil menulis siswa secara langsung.   Kata Kunci: Writing, my story maker media

Abstract

AbstractThis paper discusses how to apply Google Docs for collaborative writing in teaching writing to English Department students. Google docs as a feature Google served for all its users can be used collaborative writing in which all students in one class can contribute to make a good writing. Collaborative writing means that students write a text and sharing ideas with others students and it will be corrected and supported by others students By using Google Docs for collaborative writing, students can interact and write together with other students in developing their writing. They can give comments to other students and edit other students’ drafts at the same time. It will help them to get more ideas in writing as they combine their ideas with others ideas. Keywords: Writing, Collaborative Writing, Descriptive Text, Google Docs

Abstract

This research had purpose to know the level of questions used in English Zone book. The data were taken from English Zone book grade X, XI, and XII. This research was conducted using content analysis method where the writer determined the instrument by herself.  Based on the research, there were 5 levels of questions used in English Zone book, they are knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis and synthesis. The questions in level knowledge were 42.9 %, comprehension level were 30.4 %, application level were 3.4%, analysis level were 21.4 % and synthesis level were 1.5 %. The questions in level of evaluative were not used.   Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui level pertanyaan yang ada di dalam buku English Zone.  Data berasa dari buku English Zone kelas X, XI, dan XII. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode analisis isi dimana peneliti menentukan sendiri instrument yang akan digunakan untuk menggumpulkan data. Berdasarkan penelitian, ada 5 level pertanyaan yang ada di dalam buku English Zone, yaitu knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis dan synthesis. Pertanyaan yang termasuk level knowledge memiliki persentase sebesar 42.9 %, comprehension sebesar 30.4 %, application sebesar 3.4%, analysis sebesar 21.4 % dan synthesis sebesar 1.5 %. Berdasarkan data tidak ditemukan pertanyaan di level evaluative.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is the ability to get information in a text and be able to interpret it appropriately. Reading comprehension is combination information from a text and own background knowledge to understanding the message conveyed by the author. However, not all of the Junior High School students learn reading comprehension easily which is caused by the learning activity which is not really interesting so that the students get bored.A blend of methods and media which the writer trying to describe in this paper, is expected to improve students' skills in reading comprehension. The media used is comic strips and theapplying method is PQRST. It is kinds of activity where students are ask to read a comic and trying to understand quickly what the story is contained in the comic.

Abstract

Abstract This paper discussed about how to apply 6-3-5 Brain Writing in Helping Senior High school Students Doing Brainstorming in Writing Process.  6-3-5 Brain Writing is a group creativity technique in generating new ideas in a short time. It is an alternative method in doing brainstorming. In its traditional format, 6 represent the participants who sit in a group. Each participant should think about 3 ideas in 5 minutes. The ideas are written down in a worksheet that will be provided by the teacher. By using 6-3-5 Brain Writing, the students feel free to write their ideas because critics and comments are not allowed while brainstorming is running. 6-3-5 Brain Writing combines individual work with team. The students write the ideas individually. After the process of brain writing is done, the students evaluate and discuss the ideas in groups. It will help them in generating more ideas in writing as they combine their ideas with others ideas.

Abstract

AbstrakKeterampilan menulis adalah salah satu keterampilan yang paling mendasar bagi semua siswa di tingkat Sekolah Menengah Atas. Namun ada beberapa permasalahan yang sering kali muncul di dalam pengajaran keterampilan menulis, terutama dalam menulis teks Hortatory Exposition, seperti terbatasnya kemampuan siswa dalam mengetahui kosakata bahasa Inggris, kurangnya pemahaman mereka dalam menggunakan tata bahasa yang baik, serta faktor ketidaknyamanan kelas yang munculakibat perlunya pembaharuan dan kreatifitas guru dalam mengelola proses pembelajaran di dalam kelas. Agar siswa dapat menulis secara terarah dan lebih baik, penulis memilih teknik PQP ( Praise – Question – Polish ) sebagai teknik untuk mengajarkan keterampilan menulis bagi siswa.Di dalam prosesnya teknik ini akan meliputi pujian (praise), pertanyaan (question), dan saran/kritikan (polish), serta ide-ide dari pembaca sehingga siswa bisa menulis teks dengan lebih baik. Abstract

The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia affects all walks of life, especially education. All schools are required to implement online learning. Along with online learning practices, teachers use online learning to support the teaching and learning process. This study aims to explore the EFL teachers' perceptions on English online learning activities during the pandemic at High Schools in Padang. This research was a descriptive study using a quantitative approach with the data collection technique using a questionnaire.The sample in this study was 42 teachers of SMPN 3, SMPN 4, SMPN 8, SMPN 12, SMPN 22, SMPN 34, SMAN 3, SMAN 5, SMAN 7, SMAN 9, SMAN 12, and SMAN 15 in Padang. They were given 40 questions to explore their perceptions about English online learning activities. The results showed that mostly the teachers had quite positive perceptions towards online learning activities. Still, other teachers had negative perceptions towards online learning activities. In detail, as many as; 1 teacher (2.38%) had very less positive perceptions, 9 teachers (21.43%) had less positive perceptions, 23 teachers (54.76%) had quite positive perceptions, 5 teachers (11.90%) had positive perception, and 4 teachers (9.52%) had very positive perceptions. The highest frequency was 54.76%, which was in the quite positive category. Thus, the teachers' perceptions on English online learning activities during the pandemic at High Schools in Padang was quite positive.

Abstract

Abstract This research is a descriptive research which aims to observe the types of complex sentences in the theses written by graduates of English department graduates of March 2017 periode in Universitas Negeri Padang. The source of the data for this research are the theses written by English department graduates of March 2017 periode in Universitas Negeri Padang. There are 20 of 73 theses chosen as sample for this research by using purposive random sampling. Based on the research, there are three types of complex sentences within the theses namely noun clause, adverbial clause and adjective clause. The result of the analysis shows that there are 210 complex sentences from 20 theses. There are 23 sentences are categorized as noun clause, 126 as adverbial clauses and 61 adjective clauses. The most type used is the adverbial clause. It is found that 92 of 210 sentences are categorized very good, 110 are good, 8 are sufficient and 0 are poor. The adverbial clauses are the most used type of the sentences and followed adjective clause.Key words: Complex Sentence Types, Theses

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of error and causes of error on using gerund among the second year students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research is desciptive qualitative research. The sample of this research is 39 students selected using simple random sampling. The instrument used in this research was test. The test was divided into two part; completion test and translation test. The students were given 15 questions for completion test and 20 questions for translation test. The research data were students’ answer sheet. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the total error is 291 errors. Most errors were misformation with the total number (125 errors/ 43%), second place was omission error (110 errors/ 38%) and the last was addition error (56 errors/ 19%). Meanwhile, misordering error was not found in this study. Then, it was also found the causes of error. The most causes of error was ignorance of rules restriction with the total number 125. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the students still experience great difficulties in using gerund.
