Abstract

This paper describes the application one of the techniques in metacognitive strategy: Read, Ask and Paraphrase (RAP in the process of teaching reading comprehension at senior high school students. This strategy encourages students to improve attention and enthusiasm in learning English, especially in reading comprehension. RAP technique consists of 3 steps that is done in turn for each of the activities: reading, asking questions, and paraphrase. The first activity, Read, can help students to be more careful in reading. Then Questioning can assist students in determining the main idea and supporting details in each paragraph. And finally, in a paraphrasing will help students to remember information he had read so that it can be easier to understand the text reading. By using this strategy, the writer hopes that students can improve reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to (1) describe the third year in academic year 2009/2010 in English Department student’s ability in constructing restrictive and nonrestrictive adjective clauses, (2) analyze what deviations are made by the students in constructing restrictive and nonrestrictive adjective clauses. The data of this study were grammar test that consisted of 38 questions; 19 questions for restrictive adjective clauses and 19 questions for nonrestrictive adjective clauses. Data were collected by using cluster sampling technique. The sample of this study was KP 1 class that consisted of 31 students. The findings of the study showed that the students’ ability in constructing restrictive adjective clauses was average (61.67%) and in constructing nonrestrictive adjective clauses was very poor (30.3%). Abstrak   Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) mendiskripsikan kemampuan grammar mahasiswa tingkat III Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris tahun masuk 2009/2010 dalam membuat restrictive dan nonrestrictive adjective clauses, (2) menganalisis kesalahan yang mereka lakukan dalam menggunakan restrictive dan nonrestrictive adjective clauses. Data penelitian ini menggunakan tes grammar yang berjumlah 38 soal; 19 soal untuk restrictive adjective clauses dan 19 soal untuk nonrestrictive adjective clauses. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan teknik cluster sampling. Sampel penelitian adalah mahasiswa KP 1 berjumlah 31 orang. Temuan penelitian yaitu kemampuan grammar mahasiswa dalam membuat kalimat restrictive adjective clauses adalah sedang (61.67%) dan untuk nonrestrictive adjective clauses adalah sangat lemah (30.3%).

Abstract

AbstrakArtikel ini membahas tentang salah satu aktifitas yang dapat digunakan dalam pengajaran membaca teks narrative yaitu Silent Sentences. Guru dapat menerapkan strategi ini kepada siswa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam membaca dan menganalisa ide-ide dalam teks narrative. Maksud dari kegiatan Silent Sentences ini adalah siswa bekerjasama dalam kelompok untuk menyusun kalimat-kalimat yang diberikan menjadi sebuah paragraf yang benar. Dalam kegiatan ini, masing-masing siswa diberikan satu buah amplop yang berisi beberapa kalimat, kemudian siswa diminta untuk menyusunnya menjadi sebuah paragraf yang benar dengan cara saling menukarkan kartu dalam kelompok. Siswa tidak dibenarkan untuk berkomunikasi secara lisan antara satu dengan yang lainnya. Kegiatan berakhir ketika para siswa mampu menyusun semua kalimat menjadi sebuah paragraf yang benar.Key word: Activity, Silent Sentences, Narrative text, Reading

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk (1) mengidentifikasikan kemampuan siswa dalam memahami simple past tense dan simple future tense dan (2) mengidentifikasikan persepsi siswa dalam proses belajar mengajarnya. Data penelitian ini adalah tes grammar yang berjumlah 30 soal, 15 soal simple past tense dan 15 soal simple future tense dan angket yang berjumlah 19 pernyataan. Temuan penelitian yaitu kemampuan siswa dalam memahami simple past tense dan simple future tense masih sangat kurang yaitu dengan nilai rata-rata 37,31 dari 78 sampel. Sedangkan persepsi siswa terhadap proses belajar mengajarnya tergolong baik dengan TCR 82,32 %. Key words: Teaching, Learning, Tense, Past, Future, Perception

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the ability of English Department 2017 academic year in summarizing a reading passage in Critical Reading class. This research is descriptive quantitative research. The sample of this research is 27 students selected using cluster random sampling. The instruments used in this research were summary writing test. Students were given a reading passage, entitled "Euthanasia" consisting of 5 paragraphs with 671 words. Students were asked to read the text, and then write a summary. Based on data analysis, it was found that the students' ability in summarizing a reading passage was average. It is proved by all students only able to get scores between 55-79%. This is because as many as 24 (89% of 27 students) students had difficulty in the vocabulary and paraphrasing. They have limited vocabularies. Then, as many as 17 (60% of 27 students) students had difficulty with grammar. It is because they tend to write sentences in incorrect structure. Last, as many as 15 (55% of 27 students) had difficulty to determine the main idea.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to describe the reading ability of the fifth semester students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang in academic year 2017/2018 in reading an expository text. This research was a descriptive research. The data collected through a reading comprehension test.  There were five indicators tested; identifying topics, finding the main idea, identifying supporting details, making inference and identifying writers’ purpose. The result shows that students' ability in identifying the topics is good, (the mean score is 71.48), students' ability in finding the main idea is good enough, (the mean score is 65.70), the ability of students in identifying supporting detail is good enough, (the mean score is 68.65), student ability in making inference is enough (the mean score is 59.36) and student ability in identifying writers’ purpose is good enough (the mean score is 68.75). Thus, the results of this research indicated the students’ reading ability of the fifth semester students of English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang in academic year 2017/2018 is good enough, where the total mean of students’ score is 66.72. Key words: Reading comprehension, students’ reading ability, expository text.

Abstract

Abstrak Artikel ini ditulis untuk mendeskripsikan bagaimana guru dapat menggunakan strategi pembelajaran proyek cerita teater dalam mengajarkan keterampilan menulis (writing) teks naratif kepada siswa sekolah menengah atas. Hal ini bertujuan untuk membiasakan siswa dalam menulis sebuah cerita dalam teks naratif dengan menggunakan bahasa Inggris, meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam berfikir kritis dalam kelompok, meningkatkan rasa percaya diri siswa untuk menampilkan hasil tulisan mereka pada papan bulletin kelas atau sekolah dan dalam newsletter. Guru dapat menggunakan strategi ini untuk memenuhi standar kompetensi dan kompetensi dasar yang dituntut dalam kurikulum sekolah menengah atas. Tahapan pembelajaran inti menggunakan strategi ini terbagi kedalam tiga tahap mengajar: eksplorasi, elaborasi dan konfirmasi. Dengan menggunakan strategi proyek cerita teater, siswa akan terfasilitasi untuk mengembangkan gagasannya untuk menulis sebuah cerita dan meningkatkan kreatifitasnya dalam mendekorasi tampilan cerita menjadi semenarik mungkin sehingga cerita tersebut menjadi menyenangkan untuk dibaca.   Key Words: Writing, strategy, story theater project, newsletter

Abstract

That English becomes the most preferred language to use in this digital era and the demand of the availability of various books (textbook, journal, and e-book, etc.) in order to fulfil one of requirements to become a world class university inspired some grammar lecturers in English Department of UNP to develop an interactive grammar e-book.  In order to find out whether the interactive grammar e-book was designed according to the criteria and the users’ needs, the feedback from grammar lecturers on the e-book are demanded. This study aimed to find out the lecturers’ perception on interface, interactivity, content materials and exercises, as well as practicality of the interactive grammar e-book. This survey study involved six grammar lecturers at English Department who were chosen selectively. Questionnaire containing 70 items and followed by four scales was distributed to the lecturers. The data were analyzed by finding the mean scores for each item. Then, the mean scores were converted into degree of perception. It is found that lecturers have positive perceptions on the five aspects. However, there are some suggestions given by them who gave negative response on questionnaire. Thus, there is a little improvement needed on the e-book according to the lecturers’ perception.

Abstract

High Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) is the ability to think in the complex process which useful for transferring the knowledge in real life, thinking critically, and solving the problems. Categories of HOTS level are analyzing, evaluating, and creating.  To assess those abilities, HOTS can we find in reading exercises. This research is aimed to analyze the HOTS questions in reading exercises. This research is descriptive qualitative. Data was collected from Bright an English course book for grade IX of junior high school. This study using indicators in Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy as instrument. The result showed that the the total of HOTS questions is 78 questions or 18,9% from 412 reading questions. The percentage of each HOTS category are 11,9% for analyzing level, 5,8% evaluating level, and 1,2% creating level. Nevertheless, HOTS questions is not the dominant level in this coursebook.  Keywords:  High Order Thinking Skill, reading questions, revised Bloom’taxonomy

Abstract

Nowadays english has been taught for all kind of education since elementary until university. However, almost of students think that English as difficult subject, as a result they feel boring when learning English especially learning grammar. Furthermore, the teacher must find the appropriate technique to motivate the students. One of the appropriate techniques that can be use is word by word games. Word by word games is a game that can be done by the teacher and the students in learning English. In this game the teacher make students in groups and every group will give a key word to develop until correctly grammatical sentences. This game can motivate students in learning English so that they not feel boring. Abstrak Pada saat ini pelajaran bahasa Inggris telah diajarkan pada semua jenjang pendidikan seperti sekolah dasar, sekolah menengah pertama, sekolah menengah atas hingga universitas. Namun,hampir seluruh siswa beranggapan bahwa pelajaran bahasa Inggris merupakan mata pelajaran yang dianggap sulit sehingga mereka cendrung merasa bosan ketika berhadapan dengan mata pelajaran ini, terutama sekali pada saat belajar grammar.Untuk itu, guru harus dapat menggunakan cara yang tepat agar siswa dapat termotivasi untuk belajar bahasa Inggris.Salah satu cara yang cocok untuk memotivasi siswa sekolah menengah pertama untuk belajar grammar adalah  dengan menggunakan sebuah permainan yang dikenal dengan “word by word game”. Word by word game adalah sebuah permainan yang dilakukan oleh guru dan siswa agar siswa menyukai pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Pada permainan ini guru membagi siswa dalam beberapa kelompok dan memberikan sebuah kata kunci kepada setiap kelompok untuk dikembangkan kedalam sebuah kalimat dengan struktur atau pola yang benar. Permainan ini dapat memotivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa inggris sehingga mereka tidak mudah bosan dalam belajar bahasa Inggris.
