Abstract

This research aimed to find out the students’ difficulties in comprehending recount texts viewed from the generic structure, social function and lexico grammatical features. This research is descriptive quantitative research. The sample of this research is 31 students selected using cluster random sampling. The instruments used in this research were reading test and interview. In reading test, the test consisted of 30 items multiple choice with five recount text related to generic structure, social functions and lexico grammatical features. The research data were in the form of interpretations of student test results and interviews with students. Based on data analysis, it was found that the students’ difficulties in comprehending recount texts were average. It was proved by 67,74%, students had difficulties in comprehending generic structure, 64,52% students had difficulties in comprehending social function, and 74,19% students had difficulties in comprehending lexico grammatical features. Furthermore, it was caused by lack of knowledge, limited vocabulary, less concentration and poor reading habit.

Abstract

AbstrakTujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat apakah penggunaan Asia Parliamentary Debate secara signifikan mempengaruhi kemampuan menulis teks Hortatory exposition siswa kelas XI Diniyyah Puteri Padang Panjang. Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPS 1 dan IPS 2 Diniyyah Puteri Padang Panjang. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan untuk mendapatkan data adalah tes menulis teks hortatory exposition yang diambil langsung dari siswa pada sebelum dan sesudah penggunaan strategi.. Temuan dari penelitian ini yaitu t hitung > t table, 1,60>1,31 yang berarti penggunaan Asia Parliamentary Debate mempengaruhi kemampuan menulis text hortatory exposition siswa secara signifikan.Key words: Asia Prliamentary Debate, writing, hortatory exposition text.

Abstract

This paper explains about the implementation of “Guided Reading” startegy in teaching reading especially in teaching narrative text. In this stategy, the teacher chooses the text which is appropriate with the students’ ability and the teacher uses a picture to develop their background knowledge. Guided Reading strategy is begun by dividing the students into some groups that consist of 3-4 members. After that, the teacher distributes the text to each member of the group and prepares students to read the text by developing their background knowledge, knowing the vocabulary from the text, and knowing the purpose of reading the text. After knowing the purpose of reading the text, students read the text silently in order to increase the students’ concentration. After reading the text, the teacher provides worksheets that contain assignments to connect the story (narrative text) with the students’ experience and discuss it in group. Then, the student asks to rewrite the story which is helped by answering some questions that have been provided by the teacher. The last, the teacher gives tests to the students to find out their understanding and comprehending about the text. By using this strategy, the students are hoped having better English reading skill especially in reading narrative text.

Abstract

To achieve the objective of learning especially in critical reading course, it is important to provide a good teaching material. One of the important things to do before developing the materials is analyzing the needs of the students. This study aims to analyze studens’ needs on critical reading learning material at English department of UNP. This research was a descriptive study using a quantitative approach with the data collection technique using the combination of closed-ended and open-ended questionnaire. The respondents in this study were 80 students from 2018 at English Department of Universitas Negeri Padang who had taken critical reading course. They were given 25 closed-ended questions and three open-ended questions. The results showed that in the aspect The Important of Topic Variation was categorized as “very important” (82%), The Importance of Tasks in Critical Reading was categorized as “important” (81%), Topic for Critical was categorized as “important”. There were 96.25% students expected to have the improvement in the term of topics in Critical Reading Materials. There were 80% students wanted the improvement in the aspect of tasks. Then, 50% of 80 students wanted the improvement in term of skills.

Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to see the effect of using summarizing strategy toward students’ reading comprehension in reading. This study was an experimental research. The population was the students of eleventh grade of MAN 2 Padang registered for the 2011/2012 academic year. Sample used by using cluster random sampling which was gotten XI IPA 1 as experimental class and XI IPA 2 as control class. The test was done twice: pretest and posttest. The instrument was reading comprehension test. The data was the students’ score of reading comprehension test and was analyzed statistically by using t-test. Based on the counting, it can be concluded that the using of summarizing strategy in reading can give the good effect of students’ reading comprehension. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat dampak penggunaan strategi meringkas terhadap pemahaman siswa dalam membaca. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen. Populasi penelitian ini siswa kelas XI MAN 2 Padang tahun ajaran 2011-2012. Sampelnya menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling dan terpilihlah kelas XI IPA 1 sebagai kelas eksperimen dan XI IPA 2 sebagai kelas control dengan. Tes dilakukan dua kali: pretest dan posttest. Instrumentnya berupa soal pemahaman membaca. Data berupa nilai tes pemahaman membaca oleh kedua kelompok sampel dianalisis secara statistik dengan menggunakan rumus t-test. Berdasarkan hasil hitungan ini, disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan strategi meringkas dalam pemelajaran membaca dapat memberikan pengaruh yang lebih baik terhadap pemahaman siswa dalam membaca.

Abstract

AbstractGrouping words into phrases is one of the problems faced by English students in using the language. Noun phrase as a basic constituent of a sentence is seen very problematic. The paper tries to explore how well second year students of English Department analyse noun phrases and their problems in doing it. There were 28 chosen taken students through proportionate stratified sampling as the sample. The text designed consisting of 20 noun phrases were distributed to the sample to be analysed. Each noun phrase was generally analysed into three aspects, namely, identifying type/component, its function within a sentence, and role of each element. The analysis was by scoring and putting them into percentage. Then, they were categorized into excellent, good, average, poor, and very poor. The result shows that about 40% of sample failed to analyse noun phrase correctly. Their way of analysing noun phrase was in average level on identifying type/component (58.29%), very poor level on its function within a sentence (45.5%), and good level on the role of each element of noun phrase (67.53%). The problem was mainly students’ lack competence in identifying the part of speech and its function for each point.Key Word: students’ ability, analysis, noun phrase, text

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the effect of using digital sequence pictures on students’ ability in writing an explanation text. This research design was quasi-experimental research and had two classes which were the control class and the experiment class. The population of this research was the second-year students at SMA N 1 Lengayang and the sample was decided by using cluster random sampling which was getting two classes. XI.IPA 1 was the experiment class and XI.IPA 2 was the control class. The writing test was administrated as the instrument of this research which was writing an explanation text. After collecting the data, the data were analyzed by the paired sample t-test. The result of paired sample t-test in the research stated that the value of sign 2-tailed is 0.000 which means that the value of the sign. 2-tailed lower than 0.05 so that the alternative hypothesis or the first hypothesis was accepted. In conclusion, the results of the data showed that there was a statistically significant improvement in the explanation text which is written by the students after they were taught through the digital sequence pictures. The findings suggest that the digital sequence pictures enable students to improve their ability in writing an explanation text.

Abstract

Normalization has been carried out as a new step in reducing Covid-19 cases. Researchers want to see students' reading comprehension in New Normal situations. This study aims to analyze students' understanding in reading comprehension texts at SMAN 10 Padang. This type of research is descriptive quantitative. The subject of this research is the tenth grade of SMAN 10 Padang while the object of this research is students' understanding in reading comprehension texts. The author uses a simple random sampling technique to take a sample, there are 53 students as a sample of this study. To collect data, the author uses tests and questionnaires. The test was conducted to determine students' understanding in reading comprehension texts and a questionnaire was used to determine the factors that influence students' understanding in reading comprehension texts. Based on the data analysis, the writer found that the average result of students' understanding in reading comprehension texts was 60.90. The result of data analysis is that their understanding of reading comprehension is categorized into an average level. Meanwhile, the percentage result of the questionnaire given about reading strategies is 66.4% in the strong category. The writer also found that there are factors that influence students' understanding in reading comprehension texts, namely bottom-up reading strategies, top-down reading strategies and student grades.

Abstract

This article deals with students’ ability in paraphrasinga paragraphat The English Department Universitas NegeriPadang.This descriptive quantitative research aimed to analyze students' ability in paraphrasing a paragraph text based on Leonhard's paraphrasing rubric (2002) and to identify problems in students' paraphrasing based on the theory of Kennedy & Smith (1986). The sample of this research was 27 (twenty-seven) students of the K4 class at the English Language Education Study Program, Universitas Negeri Padang, for the 2020 academic year. The data was collected using a paraphrasing test as the instrument in which they paraphrased a paragraph of text. The finding showed that the average score in the paraphrasing test was 51,9, categorized as unsatisfactory. The researcher also concluded the number of problems in students' paraphrasing a paragraph was 55. In general, 40% of students' paraphrases were classified as substituting inappropriate synonyms. 29% of students' paraphrases were classified as leaving out important information. 20% of students' paraphrases were classified as including too much of the original, 11% of students' paraphrases were classified as misreading the original, and there was no problem of adding opinion summarizing rather than paraphrasing found in students' paraphrases. Studying these two topics is very useful for understanding how students' ability to paraphrase a paragraph can be optimally increased.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the levels of foreign language reading anxiety and to determine the dominant factors that cause the foreign language reading anxiety of the academic year 2019 English education students at Universitas Negeri Padang. Thirty students were involved in this research. The data were collected through two questionnaires. The first questionnaire is the Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Scales (FLRAS) to investigate the level of reading anxiety. The second questionnaire is a developed questionnaire to determine the dominant factor of foreign language reading anxiety. The first finding revealed that more than half of the students had a medium anxiety level (67%). 20% fell into a high level of anxiety, and 13% of the students fell into a low level of anxiety. Two aspects of foreign language reading anxiety are the text feature and personal factors. In the aspect of text feature factor, there are three themes: unknown vocabulary (71, 17% agreed), unfamiliar topic (66, 04% agreed) and unfamiliar culture (58, 17% agreed). On the personal factor aspect, there are two themes: worry about reading effect (67, 36% agreed) and fear of making errors (64% agreed). The second finding revealed that unknown vocabulary ranked first as the factor of reading anxiety, followed by the worry about reading effect in second place, the unfamiliar topics in third place, the fear of making errors in fourth place, and the unfamiliar culture in the fifth place.
