Abstract

This thesis explores the use of figurative language in football commentary, focusing on Peter Drury's commentary on the 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cup final matches. This study aims to identify and analyze the types of figurative language and meanings used by Peter Drury during the 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cup final matches. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, using Abrams and Harpham's theory to analyze figurative language, alongside Leech's theory for meaning. Out of 53 instances of figurative language, metaphor emerged as the dominant type in each World Cup final edition, appearing 11 times in 2014, 11 times in 2018, and 10 times in 2022, totaling 32 times (60.38%). The connotative meaning was the most prevalent among the seven types of meaning, occurring 29 times (54.72%). Types of figurative language such as alliteration, onomatopoeia, litotes, and euphemisms were not found in this study. The type of meaning that was not found reflected meaning. This analysis reveals a change in the pattern of Peter Drury's figurative language use in the last three editions of the World Cup finals, in addition to metaphors that appear dominant each year, hyperbole has decreased significantly in the three editions of the World Cup finals. In 2014 it was found 6 times, in 2018 it was found 3 times, and in 2022 it was found 2 times. This analysis also highlights the role of figurative language in creating an immersive experience for the audience.

Abstract

In the US animation industry, there is an increasing trend of incorporating adult humor into children's entertainment. This research investigates how adult humor is created by violating Grice's cooperative principles (maxims) in Amphibia animated series. The research is analyzed by identifying the type of violating maxim and how each violated maxim co-occurs with rhetorical techniques using Grice's cooperative principle theory (1975) with Tupan and Natalia's violating maxim criteria (2008) and Berger's humor techniques (1993, 1997). This research found that violating the maxim of quality is the most common way to make adult humor at 28.26%, followed by violating the maxim of manner at 15.22% and relation at 10.87%. However, other types of maxim violations were below 10%. The dominant type of rhetorical technique used in Amphibia involves irony/sarcasm, with 28.26%. Exaggeration is the second most common type, with 19.57%. While absurdity and ridicule each with 17.39%. Nevertheless, the rest of the rhetorical techniques were below 10%. These findings conclude that violating the maxim can lead to indirectness and leads to unconventional methods of communication. Adults tend to understand this better than children, who often take things literally. Additionally, the characters in Amphibia violate multiple maxims simultaneously, possibly to appeal to an adult audience. The show also uses difficult rhetorical techniques for children to grasp, such as irony/sarcasm, exaggeration, absurdity, and ridicule.

Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyse the effectiveness of the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy on the reading comprehension of eighth-grade students at SMPN 3 Luhak Nan Duo, compared to conventional strategies, and to examine the role of gender as a moderating variable. Using a quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-tests, the findings revealed that the DRTA strategy was significantly more effective than the conventional strategy in enhancing students’ reading comprehension (p 0.01). Gender also influenced performance (p 0.05), with female students tending to score higher than male students. However, no significant interaction was found between strategy and gender (p 0.05), indicating that the effectiveness of DRTA applies equally across genders. These results suggest that DRTA is an effective strategy for enhancing students' reading comprehension in junior high schools, with practical implications for teachers to adopt more interactive and gender-responsive reading instruction

Abstract

Reading comprehension plays a crucial role in academic success, particularly at the university level, where students are often exposed to complex texts, such as analytical expositions. This study investigates the correlation between students' vocabulary and grammar mastery and their reading comprehension of analytical exposition texts. The population of this study consisted of 7 classes with 176 students in the fourth semester of the English Education program at Universitas Negeri Padang. The sample consisted of 35 students selected through proportional random sampling, where 5 students were chosen from each class using the Wheel of Names website. Three tests had been used to gather the data: a vocabulary mastery test, a grammar mastery test, and a reading comprehension test based on analytical exposition texts. The findings revealed no significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension (r = 0.184, p > 0.05). However, a moderate and significant correlation was determined between grammar mastery and reading comprehension (r = 0.508, p < 0.05). Due to the non-normal distribution of the data, regression analysis could not be performed. These outcomes imply that grammar performs a extra crucial role than vocabulary in students’ capacity to recognize analytical exposition texts. The study recommends that instructors emphasize grammar education in academic reading classes while still keeping vocabulary improvement.
