Abstract

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), a methodology for teaching and learning content via a foreign language, has become a promising method for developing critical reading material and fostering students' analytical thinking and reasoning abilities in higher education. Numerous studies have examined the development of critical reading teaching materials, yet only some have focused on developing and implementing CLIL-based strategies in higher education. Therefore, this article explores the perceptions of English students and lecturers on implementing CLIL-based principles with interactive multimedia in developing critical reading material in higher education. The study collected data from students and teachers through questionnaires using a descriptive quantitative method. The closed-ended responses were analyzed by frequency and proportion, and compared between groups using the Mann-Whitney U test. Open-ended responses were categorized and analyzed through a matrix checklist to study a key variable or topic of public interest. The findings showed that most students believed that CLIL-based critical reading material using interactive multimedia enhanced their analytical thinking and reasoning abilities concerning the subject content. They also believed their learning outcomes would improve. All lecturers believed that the need for CLIL-based critical reading material employing the integration of interactive multimedia is essential, especially in an online learning setting. Furthermore, the lectures stated that engaging with critical reading material using interactive multimedia in the classroom increased the students’ motivation, promoting interaction among students and developing essential logical and cognitive competencies. Overall, the student and lecturer groups corroborated the need to further implement CLIL-based critical reading material development by using interactive multimedia in higher education.

Abstract

Considering the long-recognized contribution of reflective practice on teachers’ continuous professional development, this article casts new light in reporting English teachers’ and lecturers’ perceptions on the needs to implement reflective practice through video recording during peer teaching in the Indonesian Teacher Certification Program. This needs analysis is conducted as the preliminary step of the Research and Development (RD) project and the data will be taken as the basis for the development of reflective practice model with video recording in peer teaching. The perceptions of the needs were collected through a closed and open-ended questionnaire distributed to two groups of respondents. The first group consisted of pre- and in-service English teachers who participated in the PPG (Pendidikan Profesi Guru) Program, or Teacher Certification Program, during the course of 2018 and 2019; and are now teaching secondary school students within the provinces of West and North Sumatra, Aceh, Jambi, and Riau. The second group was lecturers at the English Language Education Program (ELEP) of Universitas Negeri Padang teaching at the PPG Program. The findings show that most teachers believed that reflective practice using video recording enabled them to see their teaching strengths and weaknesses and, in return, would be able to improve students’ learning outcomes. Similarly, all lecturers also believed that the needs of reflective practice assisted by digital technologies are highly important. In general, the perceptions of these two groups of respondents demonstrate the crucial needs of implementing reflective practice with video recording during peer teaching in the PPG Program.

Abstract

This study investigates the possible relationship between reading anxiety and the critical reading ability of students majoring in English. Thirty-two students majoring in English education were selected as the research sample. The instrument used by the researcher was the form of a TOEFL test consisting of 30 questions which were used to measure students' ability to read critically. In addition, the researcher also developed a questionnaire based on the theory of experts consisting of 20 statements used to measure students' reading anxiety. Pearson Product-Moment investigates the relationship between reading anxiety and students' critical reading ability. This research found several results; 1) Most students experience anxiety at the intermediate level, with a percentage of 62.50%. 2) The level of students' critical reading ability is at the average level, with a percentage of (75%). 3) There is a relationship between students' reading anxiety and critical reading ability, as indicated by r = .0.375. This shows that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. The results imply that the higher or lower reading anxiety students experience, the lower or higher their scores in critical reading. In addition, there is a significant effect of reading anxiety on students' critical reading skills. Lastly, this research is expected to have implications for English teachers, students, and future researchers.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the distribution of the level of thinking on questions on reading tasks in the English textbook “Work in Progress” in Merdeka curriculum using Marzano and Kendall’s Taxonomy. There are three system or knowledge in this theory which are the self-system, the meta cognitive system, and the cognitive system. The cognitive system in this theory is divided into four level. 1) Level 1 or retrieval level. (2) Level 2 or comprehension level, (3) Level 3 or analisis level, and (4) level 4 or knowledge utilization level. Descriptive qualitative research design used in this research. The first two level, retrieval and comprehension, belong to lower level question while other levels, analysis and knowledge utilization, belong to higher level questions. The researcher examined all reading questions in this textbook and used table analysis to classify them based on the level of thinking. The results showed that lower level questions were found more than higher level questions. Although, higher level questions were also found in the textbook, their number was far below lower level questions. There are several explanation for why lower level questions appear more than high level questions. First, learning should begin from basic to more complex. Second, it can prevent students from being overwhelmed.
