Abstract

The research problem was that the English teachers’ perceptions on the implementation of independent learning curriculum in elementary schools of Lima Kaum Indonesia had not been revealed. The aim of this research was to describe their perceptions on the implementation of this curriculum at those schools. This research was qualitative, a descriptive design. The informants were 5 English teachers who had implemented the independent learning curriculum from 4 elementary schools and were selected by using purposive sampling technique. The interview results were analyzed using the theory of (Miles and Huberman, 2014 in Safitri, 2022), namely: data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing and data verification. The results of the analysis showed that their perceptions on the implementation of the independent curriculum were various. In positive perception, they thought that the independent curriculum provides opportunities for them to vary learning methods and provides them opportunities to be more creative. In negative perception, they thought that there was no teacher forum available to discuss how to implement the independent curriculum that contribute to difficulty to incorporate it into the teaching and learning process. Therefore, they thought it was difficult for them to implement this curriculum due to a lack of direction from policy makers

Abstract

This study addresses a critical gap in high school reading instruction by analyzing the development needs of reading comprehension tasks through the lens of Barrett’s Taxonomy. Despite its established utility in structuring comprehension levels, Barrett’s Taxonomy is underutilized in Indonesian high school curricula, leaving a gap in tasks that adequately foster inferential and evaluative skills. Aiming to bridge this gap, this research employed a cluster random sampling method to select six high schools in Padang, effectively capturing a representative sample of English teachers’ perspectives. Data were gathered through questionnaires and structured interviews with one teacher from each school, focusing on their preferences for reading task content and structure. Results reveal that teachers highly prioritize reorganization, inferential comprehension, evaluation, and appreciation, with a slightly lower emphasis on literal comprehension. Furthermore, teachers favored content areas such as significant phenomena, culture, science and technology, health, social issues, and natural disasters across various text types. Identified areas for task improvement include enhancing topic diversity, aligning texts with students' cultural backgrounds and proficiency levels, and incorporating higher-order thinking skills (HOTS). The study’s findings underscore the need for culturally relevant, cognitively engaging tasks that support both language acquisition and critical thinking skills. In the broader context, this research contributes valuable insights for curriculum developers and educators worldwide, advocating for reading tasks that align with global educational priorities to foster analytical skills, thereby preparing students to navigate complex information landscapes.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the competence of English teachers in developing reading comprehension questions based on Barrett's Taxonomy in Senior High Schools in Padang. Given the importance of effective questioning in stimulating critical thinking and comprehension, this research aims to assess the levels and types of questions formulated by teachers. Using cluster random sampling, 12 English teachers from 6 schools were selected. The study employed a test instrument to evaluate teachers' abilities to create questions across Barrett's five levels: Literal Comprehension, Reorganization, Inferential Comprehension, Evaluation, and Appreciation. Results indicate that most questions were at the Literal Comprehension level, with fewer questions addressing higher-order thinking skills (Evaluation and Appreciation). These findings highlight a need for professional development to enhance teachers' skills in crafting balanced and challenging questions.

Abstract

In early English education, textbooks strongly influence children’s language acquisition and development. Yet, many prioritize cognitive skills while neglecting emotional and physical growth, limiting their suitability for young learners. This study evaluates the English textbook My Next Words, developed under Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum, through an early childhood development lens encompassing cognitive, emotional, and physical dimensions. Using a descriptive design, data were collected from textbook analysis and semi-structured interviews with five English teachers in Lengayang District, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra. The data were then analyzed by measuring the percentage of each dimension of children’s development to present the majority from three dimensions. The results of this study revealed that while the textbook effectively supports cognitive development (74.1%), it provides minimal attention to emotional (18.5%) and physical (7.4%) growth. Teachers further reported that activities were repetitive and cognitively oriented, restricting creativity and hands-on engagement. These findings highlight a significant gap in English for Young Learners (EYL) resources, where textbooks often lack balance across developmental domains. The study contributes to EYL and textbook development by underscoring the need for more holistic materials that foster not only language skills but also children’s emotional and physical growth.

Abstract

The aim of this community service activity is to develop the professional competence of teachers from the critical reading literacy aspect of high school language teachers in Koto Tangah Padang sub-district (SMA Negeri 7, SMA Negeri 8, and SMA Negeri 13 Padang). The main problems that inspired this activity were 1) lack of teacher professional skills in teaching critical reading literacy, 2) lack of teacher understanding of strategies for teaching critical reading literacy, and 3) lack of media and critical literacy space in schools. To increase teacher literacy, the service team uses four stages of training, namely: a) planning stage, b) implementing stage, c) mentoring stage, and d) monitoring and evaluation stage. This activity involved 15 English and Indonesian teachers who took part in four face-to-face training sessions. The results obtained from this training were an increase in teachers' critical reading literacy skills based on a perception questionnaire distributed to teachers of 91.7% (very positive). It is hoped that later teachers will be able to design critical reading literacy teaching modules by applying good critical reading strategies and approaches to students.

Abstract

Curriculum changes are crucial in modern education to adapt to society's needs and technological advancements. Yet, rushed or poorly considered alterations might disrupt education's flow and harm students' learning and progress. Hence, this study explores rural Junior High School English teachers' voices on curriculum changes and the Merdeka curriculum implementation regarding curriculum aspects. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, five English teachers from rural schools in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia, were selected purposively. Semi-structured interviews were carried out to collect data and those data were analyzed using an interactive model. The findings of this study indicate teachers' positive reception to curriculum changes, benefiting both students and educators. The Merdeka Curriculum's implementation fulfilled various aspects, such as goals, resources, and teaching methods, yet encountered hurdles, like inadequate facilities, assessment system awareness, and learning module development. Despite successes, teachers expressed the necessity for training and workshops to effectively integrate the Merdeka curriculum into their teaching practices. In conclusion, rural English educators exhibit optimism toward the Merdeka Curriculum, appreciating its advantages while acknowledging challenges related to resource scarcity and the need for enhanced training in curriculum execution.

Abstract

This study conducts a needs assessment to support the development of Islamic value-based edupreneurship teaching materials for English Education students at STAI Hubbulwathan Duri. Specifically, it investigates students’ perceptions, needs, and expectations regarding the integration of Islamic values into entrepreneurial learning. Using a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 111 students through a questionnaire grounded in Albert Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory. The findings reveal that students strongly recognize the importance of aligning business practices with Islamic ethics and aspire to an entrepreneurial identity that is spiritually meaningful, seeing business as a form of da’wah and social empowerment. However, they also identified shortcomings in current learning materials, including insufficient practical guidance, limited exposure to role models, and the absence of value-based assessment methods. These results highlight an urgent need for redesigned coursebooks that incorporate contextual case studies, hands-on learning opportunities, and evaluation approaches rooted in Islamic principles. As a needs assessment, this study concludes that a revised curriculum is essential for fostering competent, ethical, and socially responsible Muslim edupreneurs.

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum implemented in Indonesia aims to create an education system that is more adaptive and responsive to local and global needs. In English language teaching, curriculum flexibility allows teachers to adjust learning materials to students' local contexts, thus encouraging student engagement in the learning process. This study aims to explore the application of flexibility in English curriculum design under the Merdeka Curriculum in five junior high schools in Solok City, West Sumatra. A qualitative approach with a case study method was used, with data collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and student interviews. The results showed that flexibility in the preparation of teaching materials and teaching methods allowed teachers to adjust teaching to local needs. However, teachers faced challenges in balancing local materials with national competency standards and limited resources. This flexibility increased student engagement, although some students struggled without adequate guidance. In conclusion, support in the form of guidance, training, and additional resources are needed to optimize the implementation of curriculum flexibility

Abstract

The implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka supports student-centered and flexible learning methods as reflected in Differentiated Learning (DL). Through this learning method, teachers would prepare learning materials, delivery, as well as evaluations by referring to students’ readiness, willingness, and preferences in learning. Therefore, teachers’ roles are essential in identifying and supporting the students’ needs to make sure that the learning processeswould run smoothly to reach maximum results. So far, the implementation of DL is delayed due to teachers’ unreadiness to apply the new curriculum and their preference to continue teaching based on the previous curriculum. For that reason, the current curriculum could not be implemented well. Due to this matter, a training to encourage teachers’ competences in preparing English lessons based on DL is proposed. In this activity, Junior High School/Madrasa English teachers in Padang Panjang were gathered in a training of Differentiated Learning to improve the teachers’ understanding about DL and help with the necessary preparation to implement the DL-based lessons in their classrooms. During the training, teachers were asked to participate in workshops, discussions, and being involved in a special project where participants were asked to create lesson plans in line with concepts of differentiated learning.
