Abstract

This article examines the concept of Qaul as a foundational paradigm for message theory within Islamic communication studies. While dominant communication theories commonly conceptualize messages as neutral units of information exchange, the Islamic intellectual tradition understands speech as an ethically accountable act with social and moral consequences. This study aims to elaborate on the multidimensional character of Qaul within Islamic epistemology and to explore its relevance for contemporary communication discourse. Using a conceptual qualitative approach based on library research, the study analyzes classical Islamic sources together with contemporary literature in communication studies. The analysis demonstrates that Qaul cannot be reduced to a merely linguistic act or a vehicle for information transmission; rather, it represents a normative communicative construct that shapes belief formation, ethical orientation, and social cohesion. The findings indicate that Qaul operates simultaneously across cognitive, moral, and relational dimensions, thereby situating communication within a framework of responsibility and accountability. Furthermore, the article highlights the relevance of the Qaul paradigm for contemporary communication practices, particularly within digital environments characterized by information abundance, fragmentation, and ethical ambiguity. By proposing an integrative theoretical framework, this study positions Qaul as a core concept that can enrich existing message theories and contribute to the development of a distinctive philosophy of Islamic communication grounded in Islamic epistemology.

Abstract

This article explores the philosophical and spiritual perspectives of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, focusing on his views on the nature of humanity, the spiritual and material aspects of existence, and the pursuit of happiness Al-Ghazali's philosophy is deeply rooted in Islamic thought and draws upon the Quranic and Prophetic teachings.  Al-Ghazali posits that humans are composed of both a physical, ephemeral dimension (the material aspect) and an intellectual-transcendental dimension (the spiritual aspect). The article delves into al-Ghazali's classification of existence into two realms: the realm of decrees ('ālam al-amr) and the realm of creation ('ālam al-khalq). Human beings, according to al-Ghazali, embody both of these realms, with their physicality falling under the realm of creation and their spirituality under the realm of decree. Al-Ghazali introduces various terms to describe the spiritual entity within humans, such as al-‘aql (intellect), al-nafs (soul), al-qalb (heart), and al-rūh (spirit). He argues that while the body is material and earthly, the spirit is divine in origin and immortal.  The soul, as God's creation, reflects this governance by ruling over the body without being located in any specific physical part. It emphasizes that the spirit belongs to the realm of Divine decrees, making it distinct from material entities.  Al-Ghazali identifies different qualities within the human spirit, ranging from animalistic to angelic. He argues that the angelic quality, associated with the worship of God and the pursuit of Divine Beauty, represents the true essence of humanity. To attain happiness, individuals must purify themselves from worldly desires and base instincts.  The article underscores the importance of knowledge in al-Ghazali's philosophy, with knowledge being derived from God and serving as the criterion that separates humans from other creations. Knowledge enables individuals to understand their purpose, responsibilities, and the path to happiness.  The article explores al-Ghazali's perspective on happiness, highlighting his belief that it is primarily a spiritual and intellectual state. It emphasizes the significance of attaining knowledge of God for true happiness, as well as the importance of spiritual discipline and self-purification.

Abstract

Indonesia is the country that has been widely regarded as home to a moderate brand of Islam compared to the more assertive political and militant Islamic revivals that have taken place in some of Middle East countries. However, recent series of terrorist attack and the emergence of groups that are categorized as extremist and fundamentalist in Indonesia have given opposite impression. This paper is aimed at appraising the the moderation of Indonesian Muslim. The object of this study is two largest Muslim organizations namely Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama. For this appraisal the author employs the selectively the criteria of Western scholars as well as Muslim intellectuals, since there are growing tendency of observers, intellectual and policy makers to pose certain criteria of moderation based on their own interests. General survey on those tendencies suggests that there are at least three categories of moderate definition: extremist, Western biased and Islamic criteria, each of which contain acceptable and unacceptable aspects that require further selection. It is from these acceptable criteria that the author attempts to appraise the moderation of Indonesian Muslims through the vision and mission of mass-organization, especially Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama as well as their education system. The study arrive on the conclusion that based on Islamic as well as Western criteria, the majority of Indonesian Muslims or the mainstream remain moderate.

Abstract

Sa`id Nursi argues that nature and the environment have fixed principles that function to maintain the continuity of life while problems arise when the patterns of human environmental activity tend to contradict these principles so that life is threatened. This paper discusses the principles of ecology according to Sa`id Nursi as the basis for implementing the sustainable living agenda. Primary data of this qualitative study were obtained from Rasail al-Nurwhich was described as well as analyzed using a compare and contrast model with relevant environmental theories. The two findings of this study are that Nursi first built an ecological principle based on the tajalli principle of al-asma al-husna, namely cleansing (at-tandzif) the manifestation of al-Quddus, interdependence (at-tasanud) of al-Fard's manifestation, harmony (at-ta`awun) al-Fard, dynamic balance (at-iqtishad wa al muwawazanah) manifestation of al-hakim. Second, Nursi considers humans to be caliphs because they have the most perfect ecological elements in manifesting the attributes of Allah Almighty. Sa`id Nursi emphasized that the human community must maintain and implement this principle for the sustainability of the nature it occupies. The sustainability of life is directly proportional to the implementation of ecological principles.

Abstract

Drawing on critiques from Islamic Political Economy (IPE) and Islamic International Relations (IIR), this study analyses the political, economic, and geopolitical implications of United States foreign aid to Indonesia through the lens of the Islamic worldview. Using a philosophical approach, the research interprets the spiritual and ethical dimensions of the Islamic worldview through foundational sources such as the Qur’an, Hadith, and classical Islamic scholarship. The findings reveal that US foreign aid has minimal impact on economic growth. Instead, it predominantly promotes Western-style liberalization, democratization, secularism, and strategic geopolitical objectives, particularly as a counterbalance to China’s influence. This study highlights the misalignment between secular aid strategies and Islamic principles, advocating for policies grounded in the Islamic worldview. By integrating faith-based principles into the analysis of political economy and international relations, the research offers a comprehensive framework for understanding how Islamic ethics can shape governance, international relations, and economic behaviour. As a library-based exploratory study, the findings emphasize the need for further empirical validation through qualitative and quantitative methodologies. This research provides valuable insights into aligning Islamic ethical frameworks with contemporary political and economic practices.
