Abstract

Mathematics tasks situated in realistic situations play a central role in developing and applying mathematical knowledge. However, mathematics educators face difficulties in designing realistic mathematics tasks. This study was conducted to gain deeper insights into the characteristics of mathematical problems that underprepared preservice secondary mathematics teachers pose. This study examined 32 preservice secondary mathematics teachers' problem-posing skills based on three problem-posing situations: structured problem-posing, semi-structured problem-posing, and free problem-posing. As the context of the participants, they did not have learning experiences in designing realistic mathematics tasks. In evaluating the preservice teachers' works, the researchers used several evaluation criteria, namely the compatibility of the problem with the mathematical principles, plausibility and sufficiency of information, the problem text, level of context authenticity, cognitive demand, and the correctness of the solution. The results revealed that most preservice teachers posed problems with the first-order level of context use and low cognitive demand. Additionally, many of them encountered difficulties when attempting to solve the problem. The findings of this study were expected to serve as a basis for developing a curriculum for pedagogic and mathematics courses in teacher education.

Abstract

In a service institution such as a hospital, there is a significant correlation between service and patient satisfaction, this is an important component as information in efforts to improve hospital services. The patient admission process is often considered the front-line experience in healthcare facilities. A positive first impression between staff and patient is important to ensure a positive patient experience. Patient acceptance standards starting from the registration of new patients need to pay attention to the factors of staff acceptance, reception methods, pleasant waiting rooms, effective waiting times and handing over of patients to the treatment room. The purpose of this study was to obtain an overview of the relationship between factors (reception staff, patient admissions, waiting room conditions, waiting time, and the handover process with patient satisfaction. The study design was descriptive correlational, with a cross sectional study approach, looking at the influence of the admission system on patient satisfaction.A total sample of 82 respondents, taken using purposive sampling technique. Through the process of identifying and calculating the results of the study, the majority of respondents were satisfied with the admission process, and there was a significant relationship between the admission process (acceptance of staff, method of admission, waiting room, waiting time, and handover) with patient satisfaction. The results of the analysis on all satisfaction dimensions (tangible, reliable, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy) have a value lower than the 0.05 significance level, indicating a strong relationship between the admission process and patient satisfaction. Thus, from the results of the study in this study, it was found that in all aspects which include: reception, reception method, waiting room, waiting time and patient acceptance have an effect on patient satisfaction.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to describe the views of mathematics teachers in Indonesia on the distance learning barriers during the early Covid-19 pandemic. Specifically, this paper investigates the barriers that teachers view as significant in distance learning and efforts taken to overcome the barriers during the early Covid-19 pandemic. This study employed a descriptive research design involving 415 mathematics teachers by snowball sampling to fill out an online questionnaire. This study shows that barriers related to pedagogical dimensions were perceived as significant in distance learning during the early Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, this study reveals that most of the teachers did some efforts that can be done by the teachers themselves to overcome the barriers. Based on the findings, we argue that it is important to support teachers’ pedagogical competencies to conduct distance learning in order to face this current pandemic or any future crises that may potentially disrupt face-to-face learning.

Abstract

In mathematics teaching and learning, mathematics tasks embedded in realistic contexts are crucial for developing mathematical concepts, procedures, and the application of mathematical knowledge. Despite this, mathematics teachers often encounter challenges in designing and implementing such realistic mathematics tasks. Therefore, this study aims to construct a learning trajectory to enhance preservice mathematics teachers' abilities to create and implement Realistic Mathematics Tasks (RMTs). Employing a design research methodology, the study comprises three phases: preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The data presented in this article are from the first cycle, encompassing all three phases. The research involved four fourth-year preservice mathematics teachers from Sanata Dharma University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, participating in a preliminary experiment conducted over three months outside their regular coursework. Data were collected through pre-course written tests, observations, interviews, journal reflections, and analyses of the preservice teachers' work. The findings indicate that the learning trajectory effectively raised awareness among preservice teachers about key characteristics of realistic mathematics tasks. This heightened awareness was evident in their reflections and work. Additionally, observations of their teaching practices revealed that preservice teachers valued student reasoning in solving RMTs. However, they faced difficulties in classroom management and guiding students to construct new knowledge actively through their experiences in solving RMTs.

Abstract

Elders need friendly, competent, and responsive staff and an organized, clean and welcoming environment. However, preliminary interviews with multidisciplinary teams in nursing homes showed they sometimes felt bored. This study aimed to understand the multidisciplinary teams’ experiences of caring for elders in nursing homes. This is descriptive qualitative research used semi-structured interviews, forum group discussions (FGDs) with 64 participants in Jakarta provincial government-owned nursing homes, document analysis, and observations. The data were collected from September 2022 to July 2023 and analyzed using Colaizzi's measures. The results showed the elders at the nursing homes experienced physical, psychological, behavioral and social changes, where some of them came from poverty or neglect background. Their needs included biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. The multidisciplinary teams felt a variety of emotions when serving the elders, such as happiness, sadness, and sometimes annoyance. Some also felt “reframing,” a feeling of being forced due to no other choice. Therefore, cultivating characters such as empathy, compassion, patience, and sincerity in providing the care is important. Changes in elders with different backgrounds require integrated support. Nursing home management should provide periodic training to the multidisciplinary teams; thus, the service quality can be improved.
