Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effects of inorganic selenium (sodium selenite) and organic selenium (selenomethionine) supplementation on growth and viability of juvenile humpback grouper (Cromileptes altivelis). The experiment was designed as a completely randomized design with eight treatments and three replications. The treatment being tested was source and dosages of selenium ie., inorganic selenium (sodium selenite) supplementation with dosages of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 mg Se/kg diet and organic selenium (selenomethionine) with dosages of 1, 2, and 4 mg Se/kg diet. Another treatment was unsupplemented selenium. Juveniles humpback grouper at an initial average length of 6,39±0,41 cm and body weight of 4,49±0,65 g were reared in 90×40×35 cm3 aquaria and fed artificial diet (pellet) two times daily (08.00 and 16.00) at satiation. Fishes were reared for 40 days at a stocking density of 12 fish per aquarium on sea water with salinity of 30–31 ppt and temperature of 28–29 °C. The results of this study showed that the source of selenium supplementation (inorganic or organic) affected growth performance, glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activity, and blood profiles of the experimental fish. Generally, it was found that selenomethionine supplementation resulted in better fish performance than sodium selenite. In sodium selenite supplementation, survival declined with the increased dosages of Se in the diet, and the supplementation at dosage of 0,5 mg Se/kg diet showed a toxic effects. Histopatological test showed that there were damage in livers, kidneys, and intestines of fish supplemented with sodium selenite from 0.5 to 4 mg Se/kg diet. On the contrary, supplementation of selenomethionine up to 4 mg Se/kg did not show any signs of toxicity and the survival was on 86.11 to 97.22%. Feed efficiency, protein retention, lipid retention, and Se retention indicated that a dosage of 4 mg Se/kg selenomethionine supplementation was the best dosage. Keywords: selenium, viability, growth, Cromileptes altivelis, humpback grouper

Abstract

Addition of microalgae in the biofloc system may improve growth and survival of Nile tilapia. Also, culturing Nile tilapia in saline water biofloc system may be an adaptation for freshwater shortage. In this study, the growth and survival of Nile tilapia cultured in a low salinity biofloc system with added microalgae was investigated. Increasing salinity in the culture system was done by gradually adding sea water into acclimatization container (618 L, v) on weekly basis for 4 weeks until 9 psu salinity was reached. Tilapia were allowed to adapt to salinity change for one week and fed with commercial feed twice a day until satiation. The biofloc experiment was conducted with 3 microalgal density treatments (5, 15 and 25 104 cells. mL-1) in triplicates. Average initial weight of experimental fish was 4.82 0.76 g. Tilapia were reared for 40 days in aquaria (35 35 40 cm, l w h, 15 L, v) containing 8 individuals fish in each aquarium. The commercial pellets were delivered twice per day at 5% of tilapia biomass until satiation. T. chui was added to the tilapia culture every week. This study showed that the addition of microalgae did not affect the fish weight gain, specific growth rate and survival (p0.05). However, feed conversion ratio and culture productivity were better in tilapia supplied with weekly addition of T. chui at 15 104 cells mL-1 compared to other densities tested. Keywords:SalineBioflocMicroalgae

Abstract

Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS) is one of the bacterial diseases that attacks and causes mass death of nile tilapia. Disease control in fish farming using synthetic antibiotics has caused problems in aquaculture, such as bacterial resistance to antibiotics, drug residues in fish, and water pollution. Therefore, alternative measures to control MAS that are safe and environmentally friendly, such as the application of immonostimulant that use organic ingredients, are needed. This research aims to determine potency of immunostimulation of nile tilapia trough feeding of synbiotic feed namely prebiotic Eleutherine bulbosa powder (Ebp) and probiotic containing Lactobacillus casei and Saccharomyces cerevisiae as for prevention MAS disease. The fish were reared for 21 days, in reared for the first 14 days, the fish were given synbiotic feed then for the next 7 days they were given feed without synbiotics. The fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila on day 15th. Experimental design used was completely randomized design with four treatments: 0 g Ebp and 0 ml probiotics in 1 kg of feed (synbiotic free feed), 7.5 g, 10 g, and 12.5 g Ebp each with 15 ml probiotics in 1 kg of feed. The results showed that feeding the fish with synbiotic feed, especially the treatment Ebp12.5, give significantly different results on parameters prevalence, fish recovery, survival rate of the fish test. This research concluded that treatment of Ebp 12.5 was the best dosage of immunostimulant to prevent MAS disease in nile tilapia.

Abstract

Molluscs are one of the most preferred ingredients for marine lobster feed because the mollusc has a higher protein content. Therefore, this material has the potential to substitute the fish meals and reduce the cost for feeding lobsters. The objective of the present study was to investigate digestive enzyme activities and growth performance of painted spiny lobsters fed with a combination of mollusc meal and fish meal in the diet. Four experimental diets were formulated to contain 20% sardine fish meal and 20% mackerel fish meal (Diet A). 10% Telescopium muscle meal (TMM) + 15% golden snail meal (GSM) + 15% scallops muscle meal (SMM) (Diet B). 15% TMM + 10% GSM + 15% SMM (Diet C) and 15% TMM + 15% GSM + 10% SMM (Diet D). A total of 24 juvenile painted spiny lobsters were distributed into twelve plastic tanks (two lobsters/tank) with a size of 60 45 60 cm and reared in a recirculating system for a 50-day rearing period. The lobster was fed only one time a day (05:00 pm) with a dosage of 3% biomass weight. The results showed that the enzyme activities of lobsters fed with combined mollusc meals were higher than the enzyme activity in the lobsters fed with the fish meal combination diet. The weight gain of the painted spiny lobster fed with mollusc meal was higher than the lobster fed with a fish meal diet. Based on results of enzyme activities and growth performance. It was concluded that the combination of mollusc meal in the formulated diet was more suitable than the combination of fish meal for optimum enzyme activities and growth performance of painted spiny lobster
