Abstract

This study analyzes the Southern Gothic genre in Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily.” This study is developed based on the gaps in several previous studies, which primarily emphasized the structure and narrative impacts on readers’ comprehension, the values and societal structure, Faulkner’s linguistic choice, Emily’s contrasting identity, and the psychological factors that influenced Emily’s behavior. This study aims to identify the Southern Gothic elements, themes, and symbols in “A Rose for Emily” based on Smith’s, Harris’, and Lloyd-Smith’s concepts of Southern Gothic literature. This qualitative study employs a textual analysis method with a close reading approach. The primary data for this study is a short story entitled “A Rose for Emily.” The data was collected through a series of steps and then subjected to analysis and interpretation. The findings demonstrate that the short story incorporates a range of Southern Gothic elements, including depictions of environmental decay, horror, and the exploration of mental illness. The reflection of thematic elements of Southern Gothic is in Emily’s isolation and seclusion, Emily’s resistance to the changes, death, and the macabre. Ultimately, certain symbols are reflected, such as Emily’s house representing the grotesque, the dust and arsenic symbolizing death, the unpleasant smell representing the decaying life of Emily, and the color of the rose symbolizing her tragic and unrealistic love. This study can contribute to a broader understanding of Southern Gothic literature and how Faulkner portrays the elements of the Gothic in his work. In conclusion, this short story is an example of a Gothic tale, as it is replete with elements of Gothic tradition, themes, and symbols.

Abstract

The study examines how VR enhances self-directed learning in EFL by overcoming traditional methods’ limitations, boosting autonomy and engagement. While previous studies highlighted VR's positive effects on student engagement in language learning, its impact on SDL remains underexplored, with limited quantitative evidence and scarce qualitative insights into subjective experiences. This study used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis to identify measurable trends and qualitative insights for a deeper understanding of VR’s influence on SDL. A survey of 194 EFL students used VR and SDL questionnaires, analyzed through simple linear regression. To enrich findings, semi-structured interviews with 13 participants explored their experiences. The findings showed that there is a positive effect of VR use on SDL, as indicated by the regression coefficient of 0.945, meaning that a 1% increase in the level of VR use is related to a 0.945 increase in self-directed learning p<0.05. The ANOVA results confirmed the reliability of the regression model in explaining the relationship between VR and SDL, with a significance of 0.000. R-squared value of 0.927, indicating that 92.7% of SDL variability is explained by VR. This demonstrates VR’s strong enhancement of SDL in EFL students, improving their autonomy and engagement in language learning. Adjusted R-squared value of 0.926 further confirms VR’s significant impact on SDL. Qualitative findings identified three key benefits of VR: higher engagement and motivation, improved access and flexibility, and cognitive reflection through self-reflection. The findings highlight VR's effectiveness as an active learning strategy that promotes independent learning by enhancing learner autonomy and engagement. In EFL contexts, VR-based strategies support interactive, self-paced learning, contributing to increased motivation and language retention.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of Logical Atomism within the framework of private expressions, with a specific focus on the Indonesian proverb “Anjing Menggonggong, Kafilah Berlalu” (The dogs bark, but the caravan moves on). Logical Atomism, as proposed by Bertrand Russell and further developed by Ludwig Wittgenstein, suggests that complex propositions can be analyzed into simpler, logically independent facts. This paper explores the application of this theory to private and metaphorical expressions, which often convey subjective and context-dependent meanings. This research using descriptive qualitative methods are methods that explain objects, phenomena or social settings that will be outlined in narrative writing. By deconstructing the proverb, the analysis investigates whether its components can be reduced to atomic facts or if the expression's meaning emerges only within a broader cultural or pragmatic context. The study also discusses the tension between the literal interpretation of the statement and its metaphorical implication in expressing resilience or indifference to criticism. Ultimately, the paper highlights the limits of Logical Atomism when applied to private expressions, raising questions about the theory's applicability to subjective and metaphorical language the proverb The Dog Barks the Caravan Passes on explains the importance of analyzing and understanding thoughts logically. Language analysis this proverb can be done by dividing it into atomic propositions or elementary propositions through logical analysis as presented by Russell, namely by breaking it down into atomic parts, namely the Dog Barking and the Caravan Passing. By understanding the atomic part of the proverb, The Dog Barks the Caravan Passes Away, we are able to understand the meaning and message of the proverb by relating it to real life reality. The message of this proverb teaches us to stay focused and remain positive even though there are many negative things around us. This is in accordance with the reality of real human life.
