Abstract

House flies (Musca domestica Linnaeus) is one of the common urban pests causing health, economics, and aesthetics problems. Although intensive control by using inseticides are carried out, there are reports of control failures, which are probably due to insect resistance. Bioassay tests with topical application to study the status as well as resistance mechanism of house flies collected from the city of Jakarta (JKT), Bandung (BDG), Yogyakarta (YGY) and Surabaya (SBY) to pyrethroid (permethrin) and carbamate (propoxur) insecticides were carried out. The results show that, as compared to the most susceptible strain (YGY), we found that BDG strain is highly resistant to permethrin with resistance ratio (RR) of 133.7 fold. SBY strain was the most resistant to propoxur with RR of 38.36 fold, followed by Bandung strain with RR of 18.22 fold. The addition of piperonyl butoxide (PBO) to either permethrin or propoxur in most of the strains caused a decrease in  LD50 values and increasing the synergist ratio (SR) suggesting that the detoxifying enzyme mixed function oxidase (MFO) played an important role in the development of resistance to permethrin and propoxur. Our study is the first report of M. domestica resistance to permethrin and propoxur in Indonesia.

Abstract

After 2 years of pandemic which caused by corona virus and followed by Restrictions Towards Community Activities (PPKM) was issued by government, has caused negative impact on various sector of community life. The impact on economic sector of society was quite large. Hence, community economic wheels which disrupted by laid off / stay home policy, needs to be maintained by offering home business with low budget. One of community empowerment efforts that can be introduced to society is utilization of household waste / small scale / fresh market to keep maggot black soldier fly (BSF). This maggot BSF is kind of clean fly and not classified as disease vector, otherwise it has many benefits as chicken feed, fish feed, substitution for protein feed, bird feed etc. Maggot has become alternative protein as animal feed. After the participant satisfaction test was held, we got participant satisfaction average values, ranged from very good (rated as 5) 60.2 %, good (rated as 4) 38.6%, and fair (rated as 3) 1.2 %. Overall, all participants were greatly satisfied with our presentation about mentioned knowledge and technology.

Abstract

This study was conducted to compare the effects of dietary substitution of fish meal (FM) with black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae meal (BSFM) and Manihot esculenta leaves meal (MEM) on the growth and feed efficiency of Oreochromis sp. Four concentrations viz: P1 (25%): 50g BSFM and 25g MEM, P2 (50%): 100g BSFM and 50g MEM, P3 (75%): 150g BSFM and 75g MEM, P4 (100%): 200g BSFM and 100g MEM were prepared and tested against control without FM replacement. Each diet was fed to three replicates groups of fish at a rate of 5% of body weight two times per day for 30 days. At the end of the trial, growth parameters, Feed conversion rate (FCR), and feed efficiency (FE) were evaluated. The results showed that fish fed dietary substitution of FM with combination ratio of BSFM and MEM higher than 50% significantly improved all growth parameters, FCR and FE. It is therefore suggested that the partial (higher than 50%) or total replacement of fish meal with combination of BSFM and MEM in the diet of Oreochromis sp can be used as fish meal substitution to obtain better growth and feed efficiency.

Abstract

Sitophilus oryzae or rice weevil is a primary pest of rice that is very detrimental. Pest control that is usually carried out is fumigation using phosphine gas and fumigation using methyl bromide. The use of insecticides has several negative impacts on humans and the environment, so it is necessary to control pests naturally, namely using citronella essential oil. Citronella essential oil contains high levels of citronella and geraniol compounds and these compounds are contact toxic and antifeedant against insects. This research aims to determine the effect of citronella essential oil on mortality using the fumigation method and the response of rice lice to citronella essential oil in the flourdisc bioassay test. This research was carried out at the insect pest control and biodetriosation and formulation laboratory, using a completely randomized plan. The results showed that citronella oil was classified as effective in controlling the population of S. oryzae with a mortality of 41% using fumigation method and had anti-feedant properties compared to the control in the flour disk assay test. In the flourdisc bioassay method, the percentage of 2 gr/L influences the low relative growth rate, relative consumption rate and conversion efficiency of consumed food and the food prevention index continues to increase. Citronella essential oil has potential and effectiveness as a control for the warehouse pest rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae).
