Abstract

Low learning motivation in physical education limits active participation, perseverance, and the achievement of learning objectives. This study examines whether the small-sided games (SSG) approach can improve these conditions through a quantitative pretest–posttest control group experimental design. The population consisted of all fourth-grade students at Petemon State Elementary School in Surabaya (N=109), with a sample of 54 students selected through cluster random sampling (27 experimental; 27 control). Motivation was measured using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire containing 25 statements that were proven to be valid (r=0.619) and reliable (r=0.801), so that changes in scores could be more reliably interpreted as changes in motivation rather than measurement error. The SSG treatment was given in 4 sessions, then the data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially (Shapiro–Wilk; paired sample t-test; α=0.05). The results showed that the experimental group increased from 78.59 to 85.29 and was significant (0.000), while the control group increased less from 76.62 to 79.44. This pattern reinforces that SSG is effective in increasing motivation, possibly because the activities are more interesting, enjoyable, and encourage active involvement, making it relevant as an adaptive and student-centered PJOK strategy.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors that influence students' interest in futsal material in elementary school learning. A cross-sectional design was used to examine the perceptions of 437 students in the city of Surabaya. Data collection used an interest questionnaire consisting of aspects of interest, attention, enjoyment, motivation, and participation. Questionnaire validity and reliability were established using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The factors derived from student perceptions were analyzed using ANOVA (more than 2 groups) and independent t-tests (2 groups). All analyses were conducted using the Jamovi application at a significance level of 0.05. Independent t-test results revealed that gender significantly influences students’ interest levels (p < 0.05). ANOVA results demonstrated that grade level, students’ perceptions of futsal learning, parental support, and nutritional status were significantly associated with student interest (p < 0.05). School facilities, however, did not show a significant association (p = 0.256 > 0.05). These findings suggest that student interest is shaped by an interplay of individual and environmental factors. This study highlights the importance of enjoyment-based and adaptive instructional approaches that are responsive to students’ characteristics in fostering interest in futsal learning.

Abstract

Abstract

Attentional control is a critical cognitive component in precision-based sports such as wushu, where athletes must coordinate complex motor actions with sustained focus. While mindfulness training has been widely studied in sport psychology, its integration into sport-specific training contexts remains limited, particularly in martial arts. This study aimed to examine the effect of embedding mindfulness practices into regular wushu training on athletes’ attentional control. Methods: A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed involving 23 adolescent wushu athletes (aged 16–20 years) with at least two years of training experience. Participants underwent a four-week mindfulness-integrated training program (3 sessions/week, 30 minutes/session). Attentional control was measured using the Attention Control Scale (ACS). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality tests, paired sample t-tests, and effect size (Cohen’s d). Result: The results showed a significant improvement in attentional control scores (p < 0.001), with mean scores increasing from 60.30 to 75.91. The effect size was large (d = 3.92), indicating substantial practical impact. Conclusion: Embedding mindfulness into sport-specific training may effectively enhance attentional control in wushu athletes. However, due to the absence of a control group, findings should be interpreted cautiously. Future studies using stronger experimental designs are recommended.
