Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the grammatical cohesive device especially the reference of a short story written by a famous author, Hans Christian Andersen entitled The Little Match Girl. The type of the study used in this case is descriptive qualitative research. This study is done by analyzing the short story by locating the references used in the story and then calculating the amount of the references and determining the type of references found in to two categories, Anaphoric and cataphoric references. Based on the analysis, it was found that the short story contain 87 (eighty seven) references, in which 81 (eighty one) references belong to the anaphoric category and 6 (six) references belong to cataphoric category.

Abstract

Speech act is a part of pragmatics where there are certain aims beyond the words or phrases when a speaker says something. Speech acts are acts that refer to the action performed by produced utterances. People can perform an action by saying something. Through speech acts, the speaker can convey physical action merely through words and phrases. The conveyed utterances are paramount to the actions performed. In regard to the English as a foreign language, there are things to consider. It is easy for the speakers or listeners to determine the intended meaning of utterances if they are spoken in the mother tongue. Factors such as idiomatic expressions and cultural norms are not function as barriers to determine the intended meaning.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the grammatical errors in writing introduction (Chapter 1) of thesis of English Department Students of IAIN Raden Intan Lampung . The writer selected in the study because most of English Department students still made mistakes or errors in English. The type of the study used in this case is descriptive qualitative research. This study is done by classifying and analyzing the graduating paper as the objects based on the types of grammatical errors proposed byAzar (1989: A29), they are Singular/Plural error, Verb-Tense Error, Subject-Verb Agreement Error, Verb-Form Error, and Word-Form Error. Based on the data analyzed, it was found that the frequent and dominant errors done by the theses writer are as follow: Singular/Plural Noun Form (19.11%), Verb-Tense Error (23.53%), Verb-Form Error (16.17%),  Subject-Verb Agreement (30.88%) and Word-Form Error (10.29%).

Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the lexical density of the texts of English for Islamic Studies of IAIN Raden Intan Lampung. The writer conducted this study to find out the lexical density of the texts included in the textbook that is commonly used as an instructional material for the students of non-English Education Study Program in their English Subject. The type of the study used in this case is descriptive qualitative research. This study is done by analyzing fourteen (14) texts presented in the textbook by determining the content words and grammatical words and then calculating the amount of the content words divided to the total words of each text. Based on the analysis, it was found that seven texts contained in the textbook of English for Islamic studies are in the low lexical density category, six  texts are in the normal category, and one  text is in the high lexical density categories.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide the students and the lecturers with an appropriate instructional material that is in-line with the syllabus and fit the students’ needs. The research was conducted using the procedures of research and development (R&D) that consist of need assessment, planning, material development, evaluation and revision, field testing, and the last is final productrevision. The data were collected through interview, questionnaire, observation, field notes, and expert validation. The result of the research is that the product of the research is developed into ten units. Each unit was developed to contain three main sections, namely, reading section, grammar section, and speaking section. The instructional material also contains various exercises both written and spoken so that the students could be actively involved in the teaching and learning activities. The media included in the instructional material was selected to help the students in learning by providing media in multimedia format in theform of videos, songs, and dialogues and monologues. Students also could access websites that are suggested in the instructional material that contain online English games and additional materials.
