Abstract

The study aimed to obtain data on the fatty acid profile of BSF maggot cultived using animal and plant-based media. The study was conducted through experimental stages and laboratory analysis. The experimental stage was carried out through BSF maggot cultivation using two media treatments, namely animal and plant-based media. The laboratory analysis stage began with the preparation of maggot samples to become mash. Next, a fatty acid profile analysis was conducted at PT. Saraswanti Indo Genetech Surabaya using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine the type of fatty acids based on differences in volatility and molecular mass. The GC-MS results will provide quantitative data on the type and proportion of fatty acids continued in maggots. The parameters observed were water content, crude fat, and the fatty acid profile of maggots. The collected data were tabulated and discussed descriptively. Based on the results of laboratory analysis, it was found that maggots cultivated using animal media contained and average water content of 61.64% and crude fat of 55.48% (DM basis). Maggots cultivated using animal-source media contained higher unsaturated fatty acids than plant-source media. The highest laurate content was found in maggots cultivated using plant media (13.55%) compared to animal media (4.27%). The conclusion of this study is that the fatty acid profile is influenced by the growth media used, animal media will produce maggots with higher unsaturated fatty acids plant media will produce maggots with higher saturated fatty acids, especially lauric acid

Abstract

The Tui Jati Livestock Farmers Group is a consortium of breeders engaged in the practice of poultry farming. The decline in poultry productivity is attributable to inadequate feed management and aflatoxin contamination. Farmers currently lack adequate knowledge about feed management and aflatoxin contamination. The application of proper feed management and aflatoxin prevention is one of the appropriate technologies urgently needed to enhance livestock productivity and support the local economy. The nutritional enhancement of feed can be achieved by incorporating maggots as a protein source and utilizing poultry feces as a medium for growth. This innovation is characterized by its simplicity in terms of implementation at the group level. The objective of this community service initiative is to facilitate outreach and technology transfer pertaining to feed management and aflatoxin prevention to the Tui Jati Livestock Farmers Group in Teruwai Village, East Praya District, Central Lombok Regency. Proper feed management and the prevention of aflatoxin contamination are crucial to increasing poultry productivity, both for broiler and layer chickens. The findings of this initiative have the potential to enhance farmers' knowledge and skills by 95% in the identification of poultry feed contaminated with aflatoxins. Preliminary field trials have demonstrated that farmers have gained a more profound understanding of the significance of selecting safe feed and detecting aflatoxin contamination through the observation of the growth of Aspergillus flavus mold. Through outreach and training initiatives, farmers are equipped with practical techniques that can be directly applied in their operations to identify contaminated feed and process feed in a manner that prevents aflatoxin risks. Additionally, farmers acquire knowledge regarding maggot feed as a potential alternative poultry feed source.

Abstract

Ruminant livestock management counselling has been provided to farmer groups in Sukadana Village to improve skills in beef cattle husbandry, housing, health, and reproduction. The success of animal husbandry depends on breeding, feeding, and rearing management, with non-genetic factors contributing greatly to reproductive efficiency. This service aims to evaluate the effectiveness of ruminant husbandry management counselling conducted at the Sukadana Village Livestock Group, Pujut District, Central Lombok Regency. Lack of knowledge of farmers in maintenance is a major challenge. Counselling and training play an important role in improving farmers' knowledge and supporting food security and sustainable agriculture (SDGs point 2). This community service activity was carried out through surveys, interviews, observations, material presentation, and discussions to increase livestock productivity in Sukadana Village. The results showed that the counselling provided succeeded in increasing the knowledge and skills of farmers in the aspect of maintenance management. Farmers who actively participated in the counselling showed significant improvements in more efficient and sustainable farming practices. In addition, the evaluation results also revealed that the extension helped overcome some of the problems faced by farmers, such as feed shortages and livestock diseases. In conclusion, extension services on ruminant livestock management in the Sukadana Village Livestock Group have had a positive impact on improving farmers' productivity and welfare. Recommendations for future extension services include increasing the frequency and variety of extension materials, as well as developing a more comprehensive training programme to address the specific needs of farmers in the area.
