Abstract

This study analyzes Naguib Mahfouz’s novel Miramar through the lens of existential feminism, focusing on the character of Zahra representing a young woman who struggles to free herself from the social, psychological, and cultural constraints that limit her freedom. This research employs a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach by examining Zahra’s actions, dialogues, internal monologues, and character development throughout the story. Simone de Beauvoir’s existential feminist theory is applied to explore themes of freedom, self-determination, and resistance against patriarchal hegemony. The findings reveal that Zahra’s rejection of an arranged marriage, her courage to leave her hometown, and her commitment to working at the Miramar pension symbolizes her existential struggle. Zahra also faces intimidation, discrimination, and harassment from male characters, yet she continues to maintain her dignity and control over her life. This underscores her struggle to gain bodily autonomy, identity, and a future of her own. By depicting Zahra’s determination to achieve economic independence and personal development, Mahfouz offers a social critique of gender inequality and the restricted roles of women in post-revolutionary Egyptian society. This study concludes that Miramar is not merely a portrait of Zahra’s personal conflict but also a powerful commentary on class, identity, and women’s struggle to create the meaning of their own lives. The study highlights the relevance of existential feminism in understanding the dynamics of women’s freedom and resistance in modern literature.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the tragedy in Ameen Nayfeh's film 200 Meters (2020) using Roman Jakobson's semiotic communication model, namely code and message. This model emphasizes six factors of communication—addresser, addressee, message, context, code, and contact—which are interconnected in constructing meaning. This film tells the story of Mustafa, a Palestinian father who struggles to reunite with his family despite being separated by the Israeli separation wall. Through Jakobson's framework, the analysis shows how the sender (characters and director), receiver (audience), and messages about separation, injustice, and resilience are constructed and conveyed in a specific socio-political context. The study found that 200 Meters represents tragedy not only on a personal level, but also on a collective dimension, symbolizing the Palestinian people's experience of isolation and limited freedom.

Abstract

This article provides an analytical study of the legal reasoning and arguments underpinning the DSN-MUI fatwa that permits Hajj financing through debt and financing schemes. Utilizing a descriptive literature review, the study traces relevant fatwas and examines their sharia bases, particularly the principles of maqasid al-shari'ah such as al-ibāhah (permissibility) and manhaj al-taysir (the approach of ease). The research aims to explore how this fatwa adapts to modern economic contexts while preserving core sharia principles, particularly regarding the reinterpretation of istitha’ah (capability). Findings demonstrate that the fatwa is fundamentally supported by a paradigm oriented toward achieving maslahat (benefit) and dar’ al-mafsad (avoidance of harm), emphasizing justice and accessibility for Muslim communities seeking to perform Hajj via sharia-compliant financing. This study offers in-depth insights into the legal construction and foundational sharia principles used by DSN-MUI, contributing critical perspectives on the social and economic implications of debt-based Hajj financing for scholars, Islamic finance practitioners, and policymakers.

Abstract

This research aims to explain modernism as one of the genres in Arabic literature, which has been more often understood in the framework of periodization than as a literary genre. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a literature study approach. Data was obtained from various written sources in the form of books and scientific articles that discuss literary genres, modernism, and the development of modern Arabic literature. The results of the study show that modernism is a literary school that was born in response to social, political, and intellectual changes, especially after World War I, which was marked by a humanitarian crisis and a shift in traditional values. In the context of Arabic literature, modernism developed along with the revival (nahḍah), the intensity of contact with the West, the advancement of education, and the role of the press in spreading new ideas. Modernism in Arabic literature is characterized by characteristics such as individualism, experimentation with form, absurdity, symbolism, and formalism. Thus, modernism reflects not only the renewal of literary forms and styles, but also the change in the way Arab writers view the function of literature in modern society.

Abstract

This study investigates the process of cultural transformation depicted in Ali Thanthawi’s short story “Nihayatus Syaikh” through the lens of Edward Said’s postcolonial framework, particularly the concept of Orientalism. The central problem addressed in this research is the tension between traditional Arab cultural values and the forces of colonial modernization, which reshaped social structures, educational systems, and identity formation in early twentieth-century Arab society. To examine this issue, the study employs a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on textual interpretation and thematic analysis. The objective is to reveal how the narrative reflects shifts in cultural norms and to understand the protagonist’s—an elderly traditional teacher—struggle in responding to these changes. The analysis shows that cultural transformation in the story occurs at multiple levels. Administratively, the requirement for formal diplomas symbolizes the institutionalization of Western educational standards. Morally and socially, the younger generation’s adoption of modern, individualistic, and Western-oriented lifestyles represents a departure from earlier values such as simplicity, humility, and religiosity. The short story further critiques the declining respect for local scholarly authority and the erosion of intellectual dignity amid rapid modernization. The findings demonstrate that colonial influence is not limited to political or structural dimensions but also permeates cultural consciousness, shaping how individuals perceive their own identity. The contribution of this study lies in positioning “Nihayatus Syaikh” as a cultural document that reveals complex dynamics of resistance, adaptation, and loss within a postcolonial context. This research highlights the need to preserve cultural awareness and critical reflection when navigating modernization pressures.

This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing written data in the form of the song lyrics of kalām ‘aynīh and netizen comments from several TikTok accounts. The data collection technique applied in this study is a note-taking and reading technique through a literature review.
