Abstract

Optimization is a way to find variable values that are considered optimal, effective, and efficient to achieve the desired results. The approach that is more often used for optimization problems with multi-variables is the desirability function. The components carried out by the optimization are microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) (x1), citric acid (x2), sorbitol (x3) with the response are Tensile Strength (Y1), Elongation (Y2), Modulus young (Y3), Biodegradability (Y4), and Water Uptake (Y5). Optimization is done by using Design Expert 10.0.1 Software. Through Desirability Function analysis, the optimum treatment composition was obtained at the MCC filler variation of 18% w / w starch, citric acid 3% w / w starch, and sorbitol 33% w / w starch with the optimum response value predicted for tensile strength (Y1) = 11.38 MPa; Elongation (Y2) = 13.54%; Young's modulus (Y3) = 118.05 MPa; Biodegradability (Y4) = 46.89%; and Water Uptake (Y5) = 52.13%. The combined desirability value is 0.551

Abstract

The manufacture of bioplastics by mixing PVA with starch, for example from sago, cassava, sweet potatoes, and potatoes and so on have been widely practiced. However, in some cases, blending of the polymers may not produce the desired properties due to the lack of miscibility between the mixed polymers. So that in making bioplastics a mixture of starch and PVA requires data support of the miscibility of raw materials for making bioplastics into water solvents. Miscibility can be predicted using UNIQUAC Functional - group Activity Coefficient (UNIFAC) method. The activity coefficient resulting from the UNIFAC calculation of the ternary system of starch, PVA and water shows that the activity coefficient of starch tends to increase with increasing starch composition, while the activity coefficient of PVA is not very stable. The water activity coefficient shows the opposite tendency. Temperature does not seem to have a significant effect on the composition of starch and PVA, from the calculation obtained the starch composition of 0.01045 - 0.15325 and PVA 0.38407 - 0.23860. Likewise, water shows that the heating temperature does not really affect the composition of the water. The calculation of the balance of the mixture is carried out to get the right composition for the mixture of starch, PVA and water to form a perfectly mixed mixture. The results of calculating the composition in equilibrium are shown in the ternary diagram. The diagram shows a single-phase graph, where if a mixture containing 2 components dissolves completely, it will form a single-phase region.

Abstract

Abstract

The low density of mass and energy are the main reason for the underutilization of great potential of Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) as a raw material of alternative and renewable fuels. The using of bintaro fruit as co-firing and treatment of torrefaction – densification processes were believed to increase the density of mass and energy of the EFB biopellet. This study aims to determine the effect of residence time, compaction pressure, and addition of bintaro fruit to the characteristics of EFB biopellet according to ISO 17225-6 standards. Biopellet manufacture was carried out two processes sequence, namely the torrefaction process and the densification process. The torrefaction process was carried out at 275oC with residence time variations 30, 45, and 60 minutes. The densification process was carried out without binder with compaction pressure variations 30, 40, and 50 bar. The addition of bintaro fruit was intended as co-firing of EFB at a ratio 70:30. The best characteristics of biopellet were obtained under conditions of 60 minutes residence time and 50 bar compaction pressures with 3.00% of moisture content, 7.90% of ash content, 8.70% of volatile content, 80.40% of fixed carbon content, 4719.59 cal/gr of heating value, and 1.28 gr/cm3 of density. Characteristics of moisture content and volatile content decreased while ash content, fixed carbon content, and heating value increased with increasing residence time. Characteristics of density increased with increasing compaction pressure. Characteristics of proximate and heating value increased while density properties of biopellet decreased with the addition of bintaro fruit as co-firing.

Abstract

Biosurfactants are surfactants that are synthesized by microorganisms using organic materials and have biodegradable properties, making them environmentally friendly. One of the applications of biosurfactants in the recovery of petroleum. This study aims to determine the type of biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria using crude palm oil as the main carbon source, to determine the effect of variations in pH and CPO concentration on surface tension reduction and emulsification, and compare the best biosurfactant with surfactant synthesis. The production of biosurfactants has 3 stages, namely the bacterial preparation, the biosurfactant production, and the analysis in the form of surface tension, emulsification, crude oil removal, and FTIR. The best biosurfactant was obtained at pH 7 and a carbon source concentration of 3% v/v with surface tension and emulsification values of 42.49 mN/m and 58%, respectively. The pH value and CPO concentration can affect the growth in the biosurfactant production process, thus also affecting the surface tension and emulsification values. The biosurfactants obtained were rhamnolipid biosurfactants. The biosurfactants produced in this study have lower crude oil recovery capabilities than synthetic surfactants with crude oil removal values of 57.78% and 79.34%, respectively.
