Abstract

This research aims to read the creative process carried out by bio-art artists who use fungi as a medium of character, namely Phillip Ross and Syaiful ‘Tepu’ Garibaldi and explore the potential values in their nature. New media art became an essential umbrella for non-conventional art genres related to other disciplines, such as ecology- based art, kinetic art, video art, bio-art, etc. An interdisciplinary approach that is   no longer related to a single system but a synergy between fields of science to solve increasingly complex social and environmental problems. As a new genre, bio-art synergy art and science involving organic creation components. The use of animals, viruses, fungi, and plants is the differentiator that marks the formation of bio-art works. Research methods will be conducted with methodological approaches to art history, anthropology, and semiotics. The unusual process of fungi formation used as a medium of art and ecological issues became a powerful narrative that both artists generally raised. The synergy between art, science, and technology in the creation process is a new reference in the method of art creation, especially bio-art so that  the process of fungi formation that is not commonly used as a medium of art and ecological issues related to it as a powerful narrative that the two artists generally raise becomes the main subject of study.

Abstract

Media, especially films, have an important role in the construction of people with disabilities. This research examines Tyrion Lannister as a person with a disability represented and constructed in the Game of Thrones series. Tyrion Lannister is interesting because he is the only character born with a disability. This condition differs from others with perfect physical conditions in real life. In this series, Tyrion Lannister shows the body as a social sign. He is represented as a realistic and complex character, not inspiring, not evil, or selling mercy, as the portrayal often used by the media in portraying people with disability. This research uses a qualitative approach with a multimodal critical discourse analysis methodology by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen. The data is based on seasons and episodes of the Game of Thrones, which relate to Tyrion Lannister as people with a disability, literature study, and documentation. The research found that the representation of Tyrion Lannister is realistic and complex, showing the prejudice and social stigma he has received as a person with a dwarf body.

Abstract

Music videos by independent musicians represent a new portrait of the music industry in the digital era. This article tries to look at how YouTube has influenced the learning patterns, production patterns, and performance patterns of music content creators in the digital space. A review of the literature in this study connects art, technology, and the media. The research method used is a case study with the object of two independent music channels, Jember on YouTube. The data was obtained through creator interviews and observations of independent music channels, as well as library studies, which were then tested for validity by triangulation of sources. Qualitative data analysis is done descriptively. The findings reveal how content creators start their channels, gain popularity, interact with subscribers, and promote their music careers through YouTube. There was a rather fundamental paradigm shift in the concept of amateur musicians and professional musicians as YouTube became a digital space to be counted on for sharing artwork. Advanced research is recommended to focus on the influence of the YouTube platform on culture, capital economic issues, economy sharing, its exposure to the audience, and its function as a source of learning. Abstract

Dubbed methaporically as “sex without secretions”, cybersex has transformed the sexual practice and the meaning of erotica. This article seeks to explore the issues of sexuality in cyberspace, particularly its virtuality and embodiment in cybersex.  Many discussions on cybersex revolve around issues of accessibility, affordability and anonymity that draw sharp lines between the real and the virtual. Therefore, in this article I argue that cybersex does not completely distinct from sexuality in the real world due to the interpenetration process between sex in the virtual and real world.

Abstract

Since democratization (Reformasi) in 1998, documentary films gradually evolve with their locus of production spreading across the Indonesian archipelago. With the spirit of democratization brought about by digital technology, film communities and civil organizations in outer islands of Java utilize digital documentary film to capture several pertinent socio-political issues and raise public and government attention and responses. Those issues are commonly overlooked by the local media and were never a part of local government’s policies. Based on our fieldwork conducted in three areas outside of the Java Island (Ambon, Aceh and Bali), where digital documentary filmmaking and civil organizations are active and vibrant, our study indicates that rather than simply producing documentaries, film communities or non-governmental organizations disseminated documentaries through public screenings to invite further engagement of audiences by discussing the film with authorities (policy makers) that were often invited in that event.  In this article, we attempt to illuminate how documentary filmmaking allows the unseen and neglected issues to be articulated visually and sonically. Therefore, it would be compelling public or media attention and encouraging further government policy to resolve that matters. In other words, documentary films are a catalyst for social change by taking their roles as witness for the public and demanding responsibilities of the political authority.

Abstract

Performing arts organizations at the micro level often face challenges threatening their sustainability. The big challenge is how good organizational management practices can be done with limited resources, local competition, and changing market dynamics. This research aims to examine and improve the effectiveness of micro-organizational management in the context of performing arts, focusing on a case study of the comedy group “Double S” in Yogyakarta. This research is exploratory, using a qualitative approach and case studies as an analytical framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with group members, direct observation of performances, and document analysis related to organizational management. Organizational management concepts, such as strategic planning, organizing, and leadership, were applied in the context of micro-performing arts. The results showed that comedy groups as micro organizations have unique characteristics of organizational management practices, namely, organizational management in the context of a very flexible comedy group and the emergence of the central role of the artist who doubles as the group manager. Although it is done with complete improvisation and tends to be unstructured, the flexibility of organizational management has become a strength for the comedy group. The flexibility of management allows the comedy group to adapt to various uncertainties. Microorganizations need managers who have improvisational skills in organizational management. This research contributes to understanding organizational management at the micro level in the performing arts industry. The practical implication is to guide similar performing arts groups to improve competitiveness and sustainability. This study can also serve as a reference for further research on micro-level performing arts organization management and its influence on the development of local performing arts.

Abstract

‘Mediamorphosis’ is a transformation of communication media caused by complex interactions between perceived needs, competitive and political pressures, and social and technological innovation. The digital revolution that gave birth to media digitalisation is one of the causes of mediamorphosis. Another thing that drives mediamorphosis is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic that hit Indonesia and other countries in the world. Mediamorphosis is a concept used in this study because it refers to the form of radio broadcasts that have changed and adapted due to the novel COVID-19 virus throughout the world and in Indonesia. The main social regulations by the Indonesian Government have implications for radio broadcasting operations. This study aims to see how local private radio– Radio Elisa FM carries out mediamorphosis which is analysed more specifically using the concept of convergence. The research paradigm used is constructivism with a qualitative approach and case study method. The results of the study show that the mediamorphosis carried out by Radio Elisa produces a new face for Radio Elisa broadcasts as a visual radio in the new normal era.
