Abstract

Public participation in sharing information that was missed by professional journalists can still be seen today. Especially in natural disaster events such as the earthquake and tsunami that hit Palu and Donggala at the end of September 2018. This shows that the practice of citizen journalism is still possible. It is just, citizen journalism research in Indonesia is not varied, dominated by research on the extent of its role and whether its management is effective based on certain models. This situation must be changed. Cultural studies can be an alternative way of thinking. Cultural studies are critical studies that can help researchers explore a variety of things, namely representation, regulation, identity, consumption, and production where each can be interrelated. Another problem that I found was the understanding of citizen journalism that had developed so far needs to be criticized because it is not contextual and tends to be inappropriate. I think citizen journalism is an unequal, exclusive, elitist and discriminatory. Its existence becomes liyan for dominant journalism. This article is also an autocritic for the citizen journalism research I did before. Abstract

Abstract

Data shows that award-winning films are not always the best-selling films and vice versa. Therefore, it is interesting to investigate whether the director employs different art techniques for commercial and art films. This qualitative textual study examines the artistic treatments of both films and compares the narrative aspects of the story and the cinematic elements related to the film presentation techniques. The narrative aspects include (a) plot, (b) premise, (c) characters, and (d) conflict. The cinematic elements include (a) cinematography, (b) editing, (c) sound, and (d) setting. The results show that the director applies different art techniques for different films. For films orientated to commercial movie theaters, the narrative is more complex but presented in a cinematic that is easier for the audience to understand. For films in festivals, the narrative is more simple, but the cinematic aspect are more complex. These findings support the results of the data control, a combination of the best- selling and award-winning films, which shows that the film has a rather complex  narrative and visualizations but is relatively easy to understand.

Abstract

Research on female gamers is still rarely found in studies of women. Considering that currently the activity of playing games can be enjoyed by anyone, it is not limited to men. Research on women in the gaming world is still rarely touched on due to the lack of researchers/researchers who have a fairly broad/established gaming perspective. This research was conducted because the world of games, especially e-sports, has a wide impact, especially in the entertainment, advertising, and technology industries. The results of what has been done in this research can be obtained that gamers are indirectly struggling to get recognition in the game world. They also strive to show more potential and can beat male gamers in general. Because the gaming world is patriarchal, female gamers feel disadvantaged by the lack of support for them both professionally (e-sports) and casually. Because some female gamers give male gaze satisfaction to male gamers in terms of entertainment, this has an unpleasant effect on other female gamers. As well as the lack of support from women who do not create certain games in terms of fraternity. Female gamers feel that their habits or hobbies are accepted from the community side, especially from fellow non-gamers/non-gamers. This research has several limitations, including the COVID-19 pandemic in mid- 2020. And it is hoped that this research will be able to contribute to research related to games and gamers. That there is still a lot that can be explored in this discussion considering that the game will never run over time.

Abstract

The overlapping government policy on Covid-19 caused medical personnel in Indonesia to react by using #IndonesiaTerserah on Twitter in the form of meme videos. This is a form of disappointment for those who were previously hailed as heroes who were at the forefront during the Covid-19 pandemic. This reaction received support from netizens who posted it as an act of subversion. This article aims to examine the practices, messages, and ideology of #IndonesiaTerserah video creators using the meme analysis method of Limor Shifman through 3 dimensions of the original text, content, form, and stance. This research showed that the expression "whatever" becomes a satirical sentence consisting of commonsense applications. Subversive messages were delivered logically and emotionally in order to build cooperation and a sense of humanity. The creator produced semi-professional quality videos supported by text to emphasize the narratives of characters. The ideology of health workers emphasized that they were still at the forefront, a profession that cannot be easily replaced but can easily be lost if unprotected.

Abstract

This research seeks to explain the arena of political communication in Indonesia for civil society groups to use new media from 2010 to 2020. The context of this time shows the increasingly complex development of democracy and new media, including the presence of social media. The research was conducted using the case study method by exploring three cases of civil society groups, namely Remotivi, Combine Resource Institution, and Zero Kilometer Makassar. This study departs from the hypothesis that the use of new media by civil society groups can encourage a more democratic process of political communication. This study found that the presence of new media has not been able to encourage civil society to use the arena of political communication properly. Judging from the aspect of the arena, which consists of existence, regulation, relations, and public space, it turns out that it has not been able to encourage a democratic political communication process even though new media has been used in communication actions by civil society groups. This research seeks to explain the arena of political communication in Indonesia for civil society groups to use new media from 2010 to 2020. Abstract

The phenomenon of uploading food photos is one of the new habits in the world of social media. The creators who upload the food photos have a purpose and convey a message through food photos. This research aims to understand the behavior of Instagram users and the goals to be achieved when uploading food photos on Instagram. The method used in this research is phenomenology, with informants using Instagram in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and Kelantan, Malaysia, with a qualitative approach. The results obtained from this research are that Khalda, an Instagram user in Yogyakarta, Indonesia has the main goal to share and to be known as a food vlogger in the process of uploading food photos. Meanwhile, Zyed, a user from Kelantan, Malaysia, has the same goal, namely sharing photos of food but using the media as a means of expression. These two users have in common that they want to upload their best version of food photos without any hope of getting likes or comments on the upload. In addition, in sharing, there was no message or ideological perspective that the two sources wanted to include in the food uploads. The conclusion of this research shows that the experience of using Instagram from the two informants is divided into four categories: the purpose of posting, type of food, photo aesthetics, and places to eat. The experiences of these two samples show that Instagram is an Ocularcentrism medium that places the eye at the center of social media usage.

Abstract

This study describes intellectuality as a practice of contesting truth in offering alternative truths aside from the existing truth. This paper aimed to describe how the truth regime is articulated by the subject of knowledge and a political agent, namely Ahmad Mustofa Bisri, in the 2015 NU Congress. At that moment, Gus Mus’ practice of articulating truth by refusing the position of ‘rais aam’ was political. This study questioned how the regime of truth was articulated amid the power contest at the 2015 NU Congress. This study argued that, amid the practice of contesting truth, at the same time, there is a politics of value and idea articulation carried out by an individual who occupies a position as part of the intellectual. It is at the political level of the articulation of truth that novelty is described in this study. This study produced truths using text and context-based discourse analysis methods, including: 1). dismissing ‘hubbud dunya’, 2). fostering ‘mind’ and ‘morality’, and 3). it is strengthening ‘legawing ati’ in dedication. In contrast, the above markers are marker moments that reinforcer the primary marker, namely the regime of zuhud, articulated by Gus Mus by self-regulation (subject position) as ‘ a student’ related to elements of discourse antagonism—the term of ‘kiai’ related to the position of rais aam.
