Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the complexity of contextual meaning in political texts posted by public figures on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Grounded in Halliday and Hasan’s theory of situational context and Searle’s speech act theory, the research analyzes how political utterances function through locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. The data, drawn from tweets during the 2024 Indonesian presidential election period, were collected using documentation and structured observation methods. The findings indicate that political texts on X are highly layered, combining explicit facts with implicit criticism, ideological stance, and persuasive strategies. Through representative, expressive, and directive speech acts, public figures construct meaning that influences public perception, evokes emotional responses, and fosters political alignment. This study contributes to the understanding of digital political discourse by highlighting how pragmatic strategies shape the interpretation of meaning in online political communication.

Abstract

The rise of social media has significantly transformed public discourse. It allows individuals to engage in political discussions, express opinions, and challenge governmental narratives. Unlike traditional media, social media platforms facilitate interactive and participatory engagement. Users can respond to official statements in real time. This study examines user comments on Kompas Facebook post regarding the Indonesian government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Analyzing the discourse within these comments, the research explores functions of social media as a platform for democratization, power resistance, two-way communication, and alternative discourse formation. This study employs qualitative content analysis and critical discourse analysis (CDA). It is used to categorize and interpret user comments. The data included diverse linguistic strategies such as support, criticism, sarcasm, rhetorical questions, and religious expressions. Those were systematically coded to identify emerging themes. The findings reveal that social media enables democratic participation. It is also characterized by polarization of discourse and performative engagement. The interaction between government narratives and user responses demonstrates that social media facilitates counter public discourse, ideological contestation, and user-driven political deliberation. The study concludes social media that serves as a dynamic space for political communication where institutional narratives are actively contested. However, the limited presence of constructive suggestions highlights the challenges of fostering substantive policy discussions in digital spaces. By bridging discourse analysis, media studies, and political communication, this research provides a novel contribution to understanding digital discourse dynamics in contemporary political engagement.

Abstract

The study will determine the idioms employed in the movie and the means applied in order to translate them to the target language. The qualitative descriptive approach was used, which was supported by the use of the content analysis to interpret the meaning and role of idioms in the dialogues in the film. Data collection was made through the purposive approach which entailed identifying English conversations having idiomatic expressions and their respective Indonesian subtitles such that only applicable and contextually rich ones were selected and analyzed. This work follows the structure of Fernando (1996), who divides idioms into pure, semi-, and literal idioms in terms of their figurativeness and Baker (2018), who describes four major strategies of translating idioms which are using idioms of similar meaning and the same form, using idioms of similar meaning and different form, paraphrasing, and omission. The results indicate that pure idioms were the most frequent then literal and semi-idioms. Paraphrasing was the translation strategy that prevailed the most and this shows that translators would focus more on meaning and naturalness than literal structure. This is an indication that effective translation of idiomatic language necessitates the ability to be sensitive to both language and culture to maintain the intended tonality and emotional impact in audiovisual media.

Abstract

Language and culture have a reciprocal relationship. Any language in the world adheres to the proposition that language can influence culture and culture can influence language. Therefore, this paper aims to reconceptualize the term of desa kala patra, so that it can function as a context of situation and context of tradition with and without adjustments to bind the intentionality of requesting in Bali language. This research is field research using a qualitative approach. Data was obtained using the participatory observation method using note-taking techniques. Linguistic data in the form of the dictum meaning "I want you to do something" from the realm of family, customs and religion in Bali is taken into account. Besides, further information regarding the context of tradition was obtained from questionnaires and indepth interviews. Questionnaires were distributed to 80 respondents spread across Gianyar Regency. Then the results were cross-referenced to key informants. The results of the research show that the term desa kala patra was reconceptualized comprehensively, such as desa is place, kala is time, and patra is participant. The term desa kala patra functions as a context of situation that can bind intentionality based on the place of utterance at a certain time and certain participants, such as requesting by asking, providing certainty with tag questions, providing information, offering, greeting, and inviting. When the term desa kala patra is accompanied by adjustments to the mode of utterance, then desa kala patra can function as context of tradition that can bind intentionality. The Balinese tradition that can bind the intentionality of requesting in Balinese is the tradition of manut ring sesana lan swadharma which binds the intentionality of requesting through giving advice, providing alternative points, and complaining and sarcasm.AbstrakBahasa dan budaya mempunyai hubungan timbal balik. This study applied qualitative approach to analyze the characteristics of inescapable hyperreality in the four stages of simulacra, which includes blurring boundaries, media influence, absence of originality, and idealized reality. This study found the first order of simulacra represent the characteristics of blurring boundaries and idealized reality. The second order of simulacra represent the characteristics of blurring boundaries, media influence, and idealized realities. The third order of simulacra represent the characteristic of blurring boundaries, media influence, and the absence of originality. The fourth order of simulacra represent the characteristic of blurring boundaries, media influence, absence of originality, and idealized reality.
