Abstract

Background: The baby-led weaning (BLW) approach can introduce complementary food to six-month-old infants. This method offers large pieces of solid foods such as vegetables, meat, and fruit. BLW can encourage children's development, especially motor skills such as chewing and speaking. This literature review aimed to determine the definition and technique of the BLW in giving complementary feeding and identify the effect of using the BLW method on toddler development. Methods: The type of research was a literature review based on the review process of research articles that discuss the effect of BLW on toddler development. The search for articles was done from the Google Scholar and PubMed databases. Results: The author found infants were introduced to complementary feeding late from standard weaning. Initially, the baby is offered finger food and allowed to eat alone. BLW significantly affects children's development, especially in helping to form independence, preventing picky eater behaviour, stimulating children's fine motor skills, and improving oral motor skills. Conclusion: The mother offered late complementary feeding with different types of food and techniques from the standard method. The BLW could significantly influence toddler development.

Abstract

Background: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a clinical condition characterized by anterior knee pain common in athletes. Many factors cause (PFPS), one of which is the weakness of the quadriceps femoris (QF) muscle. Weakness of the QF muscle causes the knee to be unstable, which may affect an athlete's functional performance. The purpose of this literature review was to determine the relationship of QF muscle morphology and strength to PFPS and functional performance in level 1 athletes.  Methods: This study used a literature review method. Articles were searched through PubMed and Google Scholar using the keywords "Quadriceps Femoris Morphology," "Quadriceps Muscle Strength," "Patello Femoral Pain Syndrome," "Anterior Knee Pain," and "Functional Performance." The inclusion criteria were literature published by credible institutions and related to patellofemoral pain syndrome and functional performance. The exclusion criteria were a literature that did not use ultrasound and single-leg hop test measurement tools and published more than ten years ago. Results: From the five literature reviewed, there was a relationship between the morphology and strength of the Quadriceps Femoris muscle with Patello Femoral Pain Syndrome due to the thickness of the Quadriceps Femoris tendon and patella due to QF muscle tension and a decrease in QF muscle strength in PFPS patients. There is a relationship between the morphology and strength of the QF muscle and functional performance due to the thickness and strength of the QF muscle, which is associated with functional performance components, one of which is jumping ability.  Conclusion: This study suggested that there might be an association between QF muscle morphology and strength and PFPS, and there might be an association between QF muscle morphology and strength and functional performance. Thus, future research was needed to explore the correlation of these variables.

Abstract

Abstract

Various things can affect motor development in early childhood, both internal and external factors. Stimulation in the form of puzzles is one of the factors that increase children's fine motor development. The purpose of this study is to prove the effect of offering jigsaw puzzles to improve fine motor development in preschool children. The research method used was experimental with intervention and control groups and using simple random sampling technique with a total of 25 samples. The intervention group consists of 13 children who are given puzzles and the control group, consisting of 12 children, are given freedom to play other games such as playing in the field. The results showed an increase in fine motor development in preschool children at Tk Santo Yoseph Denpasar after being given a puzzle, as evidenced by the Wilcoxon Test results of 0.005 (p<0.05) in the intervention group during the pre- and post-test and the results of the Mann-Whitney Test posttest data of 0.021 (p<0.05). Based on the research that has been conducted, it can be concluded that there is an effect of offering puzzles on children's fine motor development and changes in the level of children's fine motor development in the intervention group after they have been given puzzles.

Abstract

Background: Flat foot is a common lower extremity deformity in children. Underdeveloped arches can lead to complaints such as fatigue during prolonged walking, impaired balance, frequent injuries, and pain. Several interventions can be employed to address these issues, including arch muscle strength exercises, toe curls exercises, calf stretches, and plantar fascia stretches. Purpose: This study aims to prove the effectiveness of a combination of heel raises exercise and vestibular stimulation versus a combination of heel raises exercise and perceptual motor program in increasing lower extremity muscle strength and standing balance in children with flat foot. Method: This research is a quasi-experimental study that utilized a pre-test and post-test two-group design with a purposive sampling method. A total of 30 subjects were put into 2 groups. Group 1 received a combination of heel raise exercises and vestibular stimulation. Group 2 received a combination of heel raise exercise and perceptual motor program. Lower extremity muscle strength was assessed using the Manual Muscle Test (MMT), and standing balance was evaluated using the Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS). Result: Both groups showed differences in the measurement aspects of MMT and PBS (p-value < 0.05). However, no significant difference was found between the groups in the MMT score. In contrast, a significant difference was observed in PBS scores, with Group 2 demonstrating greater improvement (p-value < 0.05). Conclusion: The combination of heel raises exercise and a perceptual motor program is more effective in improving balance in children with flat foot compared to the combination with vestibular stimulation.
