Abstract

Abstract

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease which is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. The motor symptoms which are also known as cardinal features are resting tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity and postural instability. The etiology is unknown in most cases but there are findings that relate Parkinson’s disease to the genetics and environmental factors. The clinical course of Parkinson’s disease varies from patient to patient. Levodopa is still the main therapy of this disease although it leads to motor complications as the disease progresses.

Abstract

The aging process greatly impacts upon individual’s physical, mental, psychosocial and spiritual health. Those aged 30 years and over experience an annual 1% decline in cardiopulmonary fitness every year. Based on this, it is estimated that oxygen consumption capacity by cardiopulmonary fitness of someone aged 60 years will eventually decline to 35%. This study assessed the positive impact of breathing-based exercise on cardiopulmonary fitness of the aged patients of Werdha Wana Seraya in Denpasar. The aims of this study were to identify and to analyze differences of mean cardiopulmonary fitness among aged care patients before and after carrying out breathing-based exercise. Study design used one group pretest and posttest based on sample of 15 individuals using a purposive sampling. The cardiopulmonary fitness is measured using the Rockport method. The independent variable was breathing-based exercise and cardiopulmonary fitness was the dependent variable. Breathing-based exercise was held three times a week over a period of eight weeks during which time data on the impact on cardiopulmonary fitness were collected. Data were analysed using a paired sample t test. The study found that breathing-based exercise can improve cardiopulmonary fitness from 21 ml/kg/min up to 21.87 ml/kg/min [p=0.0001]. To conclude, conducting breathing-based exercise with aged cared patients can have a positive impact on their cardiopulmonary fitness and such activities should be supported.

Abstract

The characteristics of nurses' work in the general treatment unit of the North Denpasar Health Center are nursing diagnoses during service hours followed by administrative work, without short breaks. The intervention was carried out in the form of Workplace Stretching Exercise, by giving sweet tea and listening to music after service hours. This study aims to reduce mental burden and fatigue and improve nurses’ performance. The study used treatment by subject design which involved 14 samples. Period 1 was work process without intervention and Period 2 was work process with interventions in the form of giving stretching, sweet tea and music. Mental load was recorded using a NASA-TLX questionnaire, fatigue was recorded with a 30 item exhaustion questionnaire and performance was recorded with a performance questionnaire. Data were analysed using t-paired with a value of ? 0.05 for normally distributed data and Wilcoxon test for data that was not normally distributed. The results showed the mean mental load score was higher in Period I, i.e. the work process without intervention which was 65.14, the mean fatigue score was higher when after working in Period I which was 57.36 and the mean score of performance was higher in Period II which was 3.82. Provision of Workplace Stretching Exercise, sweet tea and listening to music reduced mental burden by 37.05%, reduced fatigue by 33.56% and improved performance by 25.66%. It was concluded that the provision of ergonomics in the form of Workplace Stretching Exercise, sweet tea and listening to music reduced mental burden, fatigue and significantly improved performance of nurses in the general treatment unit at the North Denpasar Health Center.

Abstract

The public is increasingly aware of the importance of exercise for the elderly because exercise is an option to reduce complaints due to setbacks and improve the health of the elderly. In fact the implementation in the field is often wrong as in Banjar Benaya which implements routine exercises only once a week with a duration less than 30 minutes, does not pay attention to nutritional needs, does not use sports clothing, and displays that are not clear. The measurement of elderly physical fitness is still relatively low. Based on these problems, improvements were made to the application of ergonomic elderly gymnastics due to improve elderly’s physical fitness and increase the bone mass.  This study used a treatment by subject design conducted in April 2017-August 2018. The target population was all elderly in Denpasar and the affordable population was determined by multistage random sampling then selected Banjaya Benaya Peguyangan Village with a sample of 20 people who met the inclusion criteria. The data collection were physical fitness and bone mass. The difference in treatment effects were analyzed using a Paired Sample t-Test with α = 0.05 for data with normal distribution and Wilcoxon test, α = 0.05 for data with abnormal distribution. Data showed that there were differences in physical fitness improvement in Period I and Period II after 8 weeks of gymnastics at 43.43% with very bad categories being bad, the difference in increase in whole body bone mass was 16.76% and leg bone mass 68.67%. Analysis of Paired Sample-t-Test physical fitness data and Wilcoxon test for bone mass data in Period I and Period II after gymnastics for 8 weeks, found that there was a significant difference (p <0.05). It can be concluded that ergonomic elderly gym can significantly improve physical fitness and increase bone mass of the elderly. It is recommended that the elderly continue to exercise with a duration of 30-45 minutes, the frequency of 3 times a week to maintain elderly’s physical fitness.
