Abstract

Geographically, Indonesia is a country with a tropical climate with quite extreme changes in weather, temperature and wind direction, making it very vulnerable to hydrometeorological disasters such as floods and landslides. Disaster events have an impact on the physical and even psychological conditions of individuals, families and communities. Apart from that, disasters impact stress and traumatic experiences on their victims. One of the disaster management efforts is post-disaster recovery, including restoring the psychological condition of disaster survivors. First aid efforts can be given to physical and psychological problems so as not to cause trauma or prolonged psychological impacts. One way that can be done is Psychological first aid (PFA), which is a series of interventions to help overcome the mental health problems of someone experiencing a crisis due to a disaster. This intervention needs to be known and applied by disaster volunteers. The aim of this research is to determine the level of knowledge about Psychological First Aid among disaster volunteers. This research was conducted March – July 2023. The population used in this research were all disaster volunteers. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The research results showed that 11 people (40.7%) had good knowledge and 16 people (59.3%) respondents had sufficient knowledge. These results show that the percentage between respondents with good knowledge and respondents with sufficient knowledge has a slight difference. This is influenced by several factors, namely education, age, gender, experience as a volunteer, and having attended PFA training. Looking at the existing results, PFA training is also a factor because following this training broadens the volunteers' insight regarding psychological first aid.

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder that significantly contributes to global disability. Schizophrenia patients experience impairments in multiple functional areas such as cognition, mobility, self-care, social interaction, and participation in daily life activities. Evaluating the magnitude of these disabilities is crucial for designing targeted interventions and improving patient outcomes. Objective: This study aims to assess the level of disability in schizophrenia patients using the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0) at Dr. Arif Zainudin Regional Psychiatric Hospital, Surakarta. Method: A quantitative descriptive study using an observational-analytic approach was conducted with 106 patients with schizophrenia. Data were collected using the WHODAS 2.0 questionnaire, which assesses six functional domains: cognition, mobility, self-care, getting along, life activities, and participation. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26 software. Results: The study found that usual to mild impairment was observed in all domains. Cognitive impairments were seen mainly in problem solving and concentration. Mobility and self-care tasks were manageable, but independence was slightly impaired. Social interaction and community participation were limited by emotional and environmental factors. Conclusions: Patients with schizophrenia exhibit mild disability across multiple domains, particularly in social and emotional aspects, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to improve their functional outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Hallucinations are a dominant symptom of schizophrenia that requires pharmacological treatment as the primary intervention. Complementary non-pharmacological therapies are also needed to improve patients’ ability to distinguish and control reality-based experiences. Drawing therapy, an art-based intervention, may help divert attention from internal stimuli associated with hallucinations. However, evidence regarding its effectiveness has not been systematically synthesized. Objective: To identify the effectiveness of drawing therapy in reducing hallucinatory symptoms among inpatients with schizophrenia. Methods: A narrative review was conducted by searching Google Scholar, Garuda Portal, and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) for articles published between 2022 and 2026. Nine articles met the inclusion criteria. Results: The reviewed literature indicates that drawing therapy can reduce the signs, symptoms, and severity of hallucinations and improve patients’ ability to control them. Its effectiveness may be mediated through distraction from internal stimuli, emotional expression, and stimulation of cognitive and psychomotor functions. Conclusion: Drawing therapy is an effective complementary non-pharmacological intervention in psychiatric nursing for helping control hallucinatory symptoms among patients with schizophrenia in inpatient wards and supporting optimal symptom management.
