Abstract

Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP) is one of the most important conservation areas in Indonesia, serving as a habitat for various rare and protected species such as the Sumatran tiger, elephant, rhinoceros, and orangutan. Nevertheless, this area faces serious threats from deforestation caused by human activities, including illegal logging, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development. This study aims to analyze the rate of deforestation occurring in GLNP from 2008 to 2023, to examine land cover changes in the park up to 2033, and to assess community attitudes, perceptions, and participation related to deforestation in the GLNP area. The methods employed include multi-temporal satellite image analysis (Landsat 5 and Landsat 8) using supervised classification through Google Earth Engine (GEE) and Geographic Information System (GIS) tools. Data accuracy was evaluated using ground truth validation, along with an assessment of community perceptions and participation regarding land cover changes. The results indicate that during the study period, forest area decreased by approximately 18,822.71 hectares (2.38%), accompanied by an increase in shrubland and other non-forest land covers, indicating gradual land conversion. The dominant factors driving deforestation in GLNP include proximity to roads and settlements. Future deforestation rates were predicted using a Cellular Automata–based spatial modeling approach, which estimates land conversion patterns in the absence of mitigation measures. Deforestation in the GLNP area is closely linked to the role of surrounding communities; the findings reveal that local communities are generally less actively involved and less willing to contribute to conservation efforts in GLNP. This study provides important insights for conservation planning and sustainable land-use policy formulation in Gunung Leuser National Park.

Abstract

Forest and land fires are a recurring environmental threat in many parts of Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the level of fire vulnerability and the effectiveness of fire suppression efforts in Lumut Maju Village, Lumut Sub-district, Central Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra Province. The analysis was conducted using a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based spatial approach with ArcGIS Software. The results indicate that most areas in Lumut Maju Village exhibit moderate to high levels of fire vulnerability, influenced by topographic conditions, land cover, human activities, and climatic factors. The implementation of fire suppression highlighted the importance of team preparedness, adequate equipment, and rapid response in controlling fires, despite challenges such as difficult terrain and limited water sources. GIS-based fire vulnerability mapping proved effective in supporting mitigation strategies and informed decision-making. Active community participation and strong coordination among stakeholders are essential to enhance sustainable forest and land fire prevention and control efforts.

Abstract

Minyak jelantah merupakan limbah rumah tangga yang dapat mencemari lingkungan apabila dibuang sembarangan. Salah satu cara pemanfaatan limbah tersebut adalah dengan mengonversinya menjadi biodiesel melalui proses transesterifikasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi pengaruh perbandingan metanol terhadap karakteristik biodiesel yang dihasilkan dari minyak jelantah. Rasio metanol yang digunakan adalah 30:70, 40:60, dan 50:50 (v/v), dengan penambahan katalis basa KOH sebesar 1% dan suhu reaksi dijaga pada 60 °C. Parameter yang dianalisis mencakup viskositas kinematik, titik nyala, bilangan asam, dan densitas, yang seluruhnya diuji pada suhu 40 °C dan dibandingkan dengan standar kualitas bahan bakar ASTM D6751 dan EN 14214. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rasio metanol 50:50 menghasilkan biodiesel dengan kualitas paling unggul, dengan viskositas 3,75 mm²/s, flash point 109,2 °C, bilangan asam 0,34 mgKOH/g dan densitas sebesar 881 kg/m³. Dengan demikian, rasio tersebut dianggap paling optimal untuk menghasilkan biodiesel berbahan minyak jelantah yang memenuhi standar kualitas bahan bakar internasional, sehingga layak digunakan secara luas dan berkelanjutan.
