Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of depression among children under 15 in Kulon Progo Regency reaches 6%, while emotional and mental disorders affect 8%, with only 9% of affected individuals receiving adequate treatment. Parental behaviour influences the utilisation of mental health services for adolescents, shaping how service needs are assessed. Limited mental health resources and negative parental attitudes further exacerbate adolescent mental health conditions. Aims: This study aims to evaluate parental attitudes toward access to mental health services for adolescents. Method: Using a cross-sectional design, a total of 107 biological parents of adolescents aged 10 to 24 years were selected using purposive sampling. Result: This study finds that perceived severity, perceived threat, and cues to action significantly influence parental behaviour in seeking mental health services (p < 0.05). While 57% of parents reported inappropriate use of services and perceived no benefits from them, 51.4% acknowledged no access barriers. However, only 49.5% demonstrated strong self-efficacy, and 53.3% failed to take timely action. Conclusion: The findings underscore the need for interventions that equip parents with practical knowledge and skills to obtain appropriate mental health services for their adolescent.

Abstract

Background: Parental social support serves as a protective factor for the mental health of adolescents. This study examines the correlation between parental social support—encompassing emotional, informational, instrumental, and companionship support—and the mental health condition of adolescents. Methods: This study employs a quantitative methodology utilising a cross-sectional design. Using purposive sampling, 93 unmarried teenagers aged 15 to 24 were selected as research respondents. The research instrument encompasses four categories of social support as delineated in Sarafino and Smith's theory, while mental health status is assessed using the DASS (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale) 21. Results: 50% of the participants perceived a lack of social support from their parents, while 76.3% reported experiencing mental health conditions. The lack of parental involvement in discussions with teenagers or professionals is frequently evident in findings. Conclusion: Consequently, stakeholders must collaborate across sectors to enhance parental involvement in mitigating adolescent mental health issues

Abstract

Background: There has been a steady rise in the number of teenagers who are reporting mental health issues. Empirical evidence confirms a significant increase in mental health services in Yogyakarta between 2018 and 2022. The efforts to prevent and control mental health issues are extensive and all-encompassing, with one approach being the early identification of mental health problems in teenagers. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the mental health levels of teenagers during the COVID-19 epidemic. Methods: This study used a quantitative descriptive methodology, encompassing a sample of 64 adolescents residing in Warungboto Village, Yogyakarta City, aged between 15 and 24 years. The participants were chosen according to the prevalence of adolescents in the research area. The utilised instruments included the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), which were subjected to descriptive processing. Results: 56% of participants identified as male, while 61% fell within the age bracket of 19-24 years. Furthermore, a significant majority (97%) of respondents actively pursued education beyond the secondary level. The DASS-21 assessment revealed a highly pronounced level of anxiety (26.6%), a typical level of depression (35.9%), and a moderate degree of stress (18.8%). In addition, the PSS-10 findings indicated that 59% of adolescents encountered stress. Conclusion: Adolescents are a very susceptible demographic to mental health issues, particularly anxiety. Regular and timely screenings are necessary to prevent the progression of severity, especially in mild or moderate conditions.

Abstract

Although daily smoking appears to be declining, quitting remains difficult, and relapses are common. Cessation support often emphasizes strengthening quit intentions and motivation while replacing smoking with meaningful daily activities (e.g., work or prayer). This qualitative phenomenological study explored the experiences of former smokers, interviewing four primary informants (ex-smokers) and four supporting informants involved in their quit attempts. Social influences and work demand shaped cessation efforts. Graphic depictions of smoking-related illnesses and messages about harm to children were salient motivators. A community “healthy, smoke-free home” initiative existed at the study site, designated as a pilot area, but was largely unknown and implemented without involvement from health personnel. All informants reported at least one relapse. These findings suggest that promoting smoke-free homes as a community-empowerment strategy, coupled with visible risk communication and stronger engagement of health workers, may increase awareness and better support sustained cessation.

Abstract

Background: Elevated blood pressure above the threshold is known as hypertension and is a contributing factor to cardiovascular disease. Lack of knowledge and inadequate physical activity were identified as the main factors contributing to hypertension among 36 individuals in the Padukuhan Jomblangan community of Bantul. This phenomenon occurs not only in old age but also in individuals of productive age. If health intervention is not carried out, sufferers may increase. Objective: To encourage public awareness regarding the prevention of hypertension through blood pressure-checking activities and health education. Method: This program aims to assist individuals with hypertension in Padukuhan Jomblangan, Bantul. To address hypertension, the program utilized health education, blood pressure screenings, and the incorporation of celery plants into family gardens. Health education is carried out through lectures, discussions and questions and answers. Data from blood pressure examinations is processed by comparing it with standards set by the Ministry of Health. Results: 13 people were identified as having level 2 hypertension, and 11 people were identified as having level 1 hypertension. The community was motivated to combat high blood pressure through physical activity, celery consumption, and growing celery at home for its medicinal properties. Conclusion: Stakeholders and Community Health Centers must revitalize NCDs Health Program to prevent NCDs. Furthermore, people can add celery as a family medicinal plant to reduce hypertension.

Abstract

Introduction: Indonesia's tourism continues to grow annually despite increasing competition in the sector. This study assesses the risk behavior of Indonesian domestic tourists in shopping areas in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, particularly in terms of health and safety. Methods: This quantitative research used a cross-sectional approach and was conducted in shopping areas in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Using accidental sampling, 212 domestic tourists aged at least 17 years were selected as respondents. This study incorporated primary data that were collected from questionnaires asking about the characteristics of the respondents and their knowledge, attitudes, and behavior concerning healthy and safe travel, and was examined using univariate and bivariate analyses. Results: More than 70% of the respondents were female and teenagers (17-24 years old). Approximately 53% of the respondents had low education, but most had good knowledge, positive attitudes, and good behavior towards travel health and safety. Thus, gender (p-value= 0.000) and tourist attitudes (p-value = 0.000) were significantly associated with health and safety behaviors during travel. Conclusion: The findings show that domestic tourists have good knowledge of and positive attitudes towards travel health and safety risks.
