Abstract

This research focuses on the redesign of the sanitary piping system on a passenger ship that sustained damage due to a tropical cyclone in the vicinity of Bolok Port, Kupang. The main objective is to redesign the sanitary discharge system to comply with MARPOL Annex IV and classification rules, which governs sewage pollution prevention from ships. A structured engineering methodology was employed, encompassing adherence to regulations, hydraulic evaluation, selection of system components, and schematic design. The assessment considers the number of crew and passengers to determine system requirements. Based on the analysis, the vessel requires a sewage holding tank with a minimum capacity of 4,11 m³/h. Sanitary discharge piping is specified using DN40 Schedule 80 carbon steel pipes according to JIS standards. Jets STP 600 was chosen as the sewage treatment unit, offering a treatment capacity of 0,6 m³/h and conforming to the standards outlined in IMO MEPC.227(64). This retrofit design aims to improve sanitation efficiency, enhance operational safety, and reduce the environmental impact of wastewater discharge. These results provide a basis for the application of sustainable retrofitting strategies on vessels operating under comparable maritime environments.

Abstract

The growing accumulation of used motor oil, classified as hazardous waste (B3), presents an urgent environmental challenge. This research investigates the feasibility of generating small-scale electrical power using waste oil combustion in a stove integrated with a Thermoelectric Generator (TEG). An experimental setup was developed where the hot side of the TEG is heated by the combustion chamber of the stove and the cold side is cooled using a water block. Real-time temperature, voltage, and power output data were collected using an Arduino-based sensor system. The maximum observed temperature difference across the TEG module was 233 °C. Under open-circuit conditions, a peak voltage of 37.32 V was recorded, while the maximum output power under load reached 11.72 W at a current of 0.76 A. The system achieved its highest electrical efficiency of 0.182% at the peak temperature gradient. These results demonstrate the potential of TEG modules for converting heat from waste oil combustion into electricity, with optimal performance achieved under stable high-temperature gradients and consistent fuel supply.

Abstract

Lack of understanding of students about renewable energy can be produced from pumps, namely electrical energy. The energy produced by this pump is beneficial for rural areas that do not have electricity.  The purpose of this research is to modify the pump as a turbine for a micro-hydro power plant which can be used by students of the Mechanical Engineering Department, the University of Muhammadiyah Pontianak as learning media in the field of fluid machines and laboratory-scale energy conversion machines. The research subjects were 15 students of mechanical engineering and pumps that were converted into turbines to generate electricity. The data collected first comes from the performance test of a pump that has been converted into a pump as a turbine. Further data was obtained from students through a pretest with a conceptual type of pump used as a power plant. Then after the pretest, students were treated by using and operating a pump as a turbine as a learning media. From this media, students must also explain the concept and how the pump as a turbine can produce electrical energy in writing. The student's written results obtained were analyzed to determine the effect of the pump as turbine model on students' understanding of conceptual analysis. The result of this research is a pump that has been converted into a pump as the turbine. In addition, as a simple practical tool to test the performance of the pump as a turbine. There was an increase in students' understanding in terms of the ability to describe the concept of power generation sources from pumps and analyze the process and workings of the pump as a turbine to produce electrical energy.
