Abstract

The Coronavirus pandemic disrupted learning processes in higher education institutions in Indonesia, affecting the relationships and interactions between lecturers and students, and necessitating an understanding of the beliefs and strategies in evaluating Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) during the pandemic. Therefore, this study aims to examine the beliefs and strategies of lecturers in evaluating HOTS during the COVID-19 pandemic using e-learning platforms. This study combines quantitative methods to identify the frequency distributions of key factors and survey lecturers’ beliefs about evaluating student learning outcomes using a Likert Scale. Qualitative methods were used to analyze lecturers’ beliefs and strategies in evaluating HOTS through interviews. This study reveals that learning in the context of HOTS could still be conducted during the pandemic, although there were adjustments in using learning media from offline to online modes. This transition had been challenging for many lecturers, requiring trial, error and learning various available learning media. Initially considered a major problem, over time, lecturers had become accustomed to using technology to support student learning. Lecturers were very optimistic that online learning at the higher education level could be effective, despite requiring adjustments and learning new media, with strategies influenced by their beliefs, teaching philosophy, and the conditions during the pandemic

Abstract

Despite the abundant advantages of teacher's questions, teachers still do not gain any benefits from them as they face many challenges in posing them. However, teachers who pose questions as a part of the teaching-learning strategy in the class may gain different outputs. A descriptive qualitative study is carried out to find out the types of questions that dominantly posed by a teacher in the intensive listening course at an institute of Islamic studies in Ponorogo. A lecturer and her class took part as participants on the study. Class observations, videotape observation, and interviews were utilized to gather the data. The revised Bloom’s taxonomy process verbs, assessment and questioning strategies was employed to analyze the data. The finding shows that the lecturer spent 73.8 percent of her questions on remembering, 17.8 percent on the understanding level, 5.9 percent on analyzing, and 2.9 percent on the evaluating level. It indicates that her questions were dominated by a low level of thinking skill.

Abstract

Abstract. This research examines various phonetic symbols in language, such as onomatopoeia, phonesthemes, and ideophones, in the comic *Popeye the Sailorman* volumes 60-65. The study focuses specifically on the forms and meanings of sound symbols, particularly onomatopoeia, as they appear in the comic. This research provides a basis for understanding sound symbols as tools for describing events and conveying the author’s intent to the readers. The objective is to gain a deeper understanding of the role of onomatopoeic sound symbols in the comic’s storyline. For data analysis, the referential identity method (Sudaryanto, 1993) was applied. The types were analyzed by referring to Ullman’s theory (1962). The results show that are two types of onomatopoeias found in the comic, the primary and secondary onomatopoeias. Primary onomatopoeias involves mimicking a sound using a similar sound, where the sound originates from the object itself. This type of onomatopoeia appears in words that imitate sounds, suggesting the object they describe. And Secondary onomatopoeia refers to sounds that emerge from the relationship between an object's sound and its movement (such as dither, dodder, quiver, slink, slither, slouch, squirm, and wriggle) or are solely based on movement. This type of onomatopoeia originates from actions. The subject of this study is “Popeye the Sailorman”, a comic widely popular with both young and adult readers, especially males or boys. From the volume of 60-65 Popeye comics, 64 types of Onomatopoeai were found. The study’s findings will include a summary, review, and meaningful sentences that will allow the researcher to gain detailed insights into the types, meanings, and unique features of onomatopoeia as they serve to depict events and the storyline of the comic. Keywords : onomatopoeia , sound symbol, comic, linguistic.

Abstract

This study investigates patterns of the theme and thematic progression in a recount text by a pre-service teacher in Indonesia. This study employs a descriptive-qualitative case study research design. The data were obtained from six pre-service teachers’ texts. This study uses the theory of the Theme system developed by Halliday (2014) and the theory of Thematic progression proposed by Eggins (2004) as the framework to analyze the data. The findings revealed that pre-service teachers employed various approaches to building interest and depth in their work, such as coherence using sufficient textual themes and theme progressions. The theme system includes the topical, interpersonal, and textual themes delivered to make the text cohesive and coherent. Furthermore, the Zigzag pattern showed that the teacher maintained a clear focus, successfully established a logical connection, and provided elaboration in their writing. Although it needs several improvements on the higher-level theme, the teacher employed various approaches to building interest and depth in her work. The findings of this study suggest that pre-service teachers need to work on a higher level of English writing for academic and professional writing competence. Finally, it has implications for future studies that could extend this study in investigating argumentative texts written by teachers to improve the higher level of English writing and professional competence.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the study of research abstracts and its rhetorical structure. While the number of studies in rhetorical moves of RA abstracts are growing, there is still little attention given to thesis and dissertation abstracts especially in relation to the link between genre knowledge and its rhetorical realization. The present study aims to identify the variations of rhetorical move manifestation in abstracts of master’s theses and dissertations written by local and international graduate lecturers and explore the relationship between the manifestations and the author’s genre knowledge development. This study employed a qualitative approach with Hyland’s (2000) five-move analysis model as the main framework of the study. The findings revealed that there were similarities in the rhetorical structure of abstracts by the local and international graduates. The study also found that educational level and supportive academic environment play an important role in author’s genre knowledge trajectories. The findings discovered in the study provide a clearer picture to help in the development of a universal guideline for abstract writing in final papers for higher education.

Abstract

This study examines the use of metadiscourse in English, Indonesian, and Arabic research article abstracts from the Studia Islamika journal, published between 2014 and 2023. Focusing on enhancing cross-cultural academic communication, the research analyzes how authors affiliated with Islamic higher education institutions employ metadiscourse to engage readers and position their work within the scholarly field. Using Hyland's (2005) metadiscourse framework, the study identifies distinct patterns in the distribution and realization of interactive and interactional metadiscourse elements across the three languages. Transitions are the most frequently employed interactive feature, with a stronger reliance on frame markers in Indonesian and Arabic abstracts. However, the absence of self-mentions and engagement markers across all three languages suggests a shared preference for a formal academic tone. These findings provide valuable insights into metadiscourse practices in Islamic studies abstracts, offering guidance for scholars in preparing manuscripts for publication. Additionally, this research underscores the importance of focusing on metadiscourse in academic writing within language education departments at Islamic higher education institutions, enhancing scholars’ writing skills and promoting awareness of cultural and linguistic nuances when addressing a global audience.

Abstract

Background: This research is motivated by the rich cultural heritage of the Banjar community and the significance of proverbs as a medium for imparting moral and educational values. Understanding the Islamic values embedded in these proverbs enhances the appreciation of local wisdom and education. Purpose: This study aims to reveal the values of Islamic education contained in the use of the chicken lexicon in the Banjar proverb and explain the function of the Banjar proverb as a medium for Islamic value education in the Banjar community. Method: The research method used is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected from two main books that document Banjar proverbs, namely Peribahasa Banjar Urang Banjar’ and  ‘Kamus Peribahasa Banjar’. The analysis was carried out by matching and interpreting 196 Banjar proverbs using the chicken lexicon, as well as interviews with cultural and literary sources of Banjar. Result: The results of the study show that Banjar proverbs that use the chicken lexicon contain various Islamic educational values, such as the value of faith (tawakal), sharia value (professionalism), and the value of morality (courage, compassion, humility, insight, hard work, and tolerance). Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that the Banjar proverb with chicken lexicon is able to convey the values of Islamic education in a relevant and contextual way, strengthen cultural identity, and help shape the character of society based on Islamic teachings. The suggestion for further research is to explore more deeply the use of other animal lexicons in Banjar proverbs and their relationship to Islamic educational values.

Abstract

While there have been several studies reporting teachers’ teaching practices for students with special needs, the inquiry on teachers’ motivation in the realms of Indonesian special education and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching on the basis of their vision on themselves, consisting of their ideal, ought-to, and feared language teacher selves is still lacking in literature. Motivation has been arguably a crucial factor in the teaching-learning dynamics. This study aims to dissect two Indonesian special school teachers’ motivation in teaching EFL to students with special educational needs (SEN) as it potentially drives them to develop professionally. This study, then, is executed as a narrative inquiry by amassing data from two Indonesian female special school teachers through interviews. The discoveries exhibit several elements which might motivate Indonesian special school teachers to teach EFL to students with SEN, encompassing (1) inspirations beyond educational environments, (2) adjustments to the curriculum, and (3) misalignments between the nationally administered curriculum and their teaching implementation. The aforementioned elements also accentuate how the diverse needs of students with SEN influence teacher motivation. In light to the inquiry, several recommendations are proposed for further studies.
