Abstract

This research investigates the representation of Jokowi’s figure as the governor of Jakarta, the presidential candidate, and the President of Indonesia in the Jakarta Post by using nomination and predication strategies of Discourse Historical Approach (DHA) proposed by Reisigl and Wodak (2001). Fifteen editorials focusing on Jokowi were examined. Findings reveal three main points. First, deixis and synecdoches become the nomination strategies that signify changes. The strategies signal that the Jakarta Post prefers to focus on Jokowi when he becomes the president since his every action represents the action that the government and Indonesia take. Second, the Jakarta Post prefers to use positive predication strategies in presenting Jokowi’s figure in all categories except on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) issue. Third, the signification of the representation indicates that nomination and predication strategies are employed to represent the shift in political support towards Jokowi: from positive to negative. The Jakarta Post supports Jokowi since his performance as a leader is in line with the Jakarta Post values. However, the Jakarta Post no longer gives him its full support on the KPK issue, for his action is seen to contradict the Jakarta Post’s ideology that supports anticorruption movement.

Abstract

Another Look at the Rhetorical Moves and Linguistic Realizations in International and Indonesian Journal Articles: A Case of Tourism Research Kurniawan, Eri; Sabila, Nurul Aini Akrima

Abstract

Although a significant number of studies have been conducted to explore the rhetorical structures of research article abstracts, there is a paucity of research specifically comparing the move patterns, and linguistic features of tourism research article abstracts published in international and national journals. Such a comparison is quintessential to address a notion that journal indexation may factor into the quality of textual organization in abstract writing. Employing Hyland’s (2000) analytical framework, the paper analyzed 120 tourism research article abstracts from international journals indexed by Scopus and Indonesian journals indexed by Sinta. Findings revealed more similarities than differences across the two corpora. All of Hyland’s five moves were generally found in the abstracts, with  M2 (Purpose), M3 (Method), and M4 (Product) as the most occurring moves in both data sets. An exception was found in M1 (Introduction) and M5 (Conclusion), where M1 was favored and M5 was excluded in Sinta-indexed abstracts, yet the reverse was true of Scopus-indexed counterparts. In terms of the linguistic features, present tense and active voice were evidently dominant across both data groups, with a notable exception in Method move, where past tense and passive voice were more favorable. These findings appear to suggest that journal indexation does not profoundly influence abstract writing. Recommendations and implications for academic writing for publication purposes are also discussed.

Abstract

Humor has been characterized as an index of children’s language development and cognitive performance. While research on this area has been abound cross linguistically, specific inquiry on children’s humor development in the Indonesian context remains scant. Occupying this lacuna, this research sought to examine kinds of humor acquired by the children in early childhood by invoking McGhee’s humor developmental stages. Embracing a descriptive qualitative method, the study involved eleven Indonesian-speaking children in Yogyakarta aged around 1 to 5 years old, where the data were assembled primarily through direct naturalistic observations. The children’s spontaneous humor production was recorded as they were interacting with their peers and/or their parents in their homes and neighborhoods. The findings revealed that the children could perceive and produce nonverbal and verbal humor, confirming existing literature. As they grow, certain patterns of humor also emerge, indicative of their cognitive and social development. More research is necessary to better understand how children of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds understand, respond to or initiate a humorous situation.

Abstract

This study presents the reflections of two Indonesian mothers working as EFL teachers on their experiences of fostering their children's bilingual development. It employed a narrative inquiry approach, gathering the participants' stories through oral and multimodal narratives. The mothers shared their stories during a semi-structured interview and through photos and videos. The findings reveal that the participating mothers introduced English to their children early by engaging them in natural English interactions and activities such as story reading before bed, hands-on activities, role-playing, games, and daily communication. Despite many similarities in activities, the consistency and continuity of providing exposure to English and Indonesian languages are different. The first mother implemented One Parent One Language Strategy (OPOL) with her child, using English with mother and Indonesian with father. On its journey, she shifted the strategy to Minority Language at Home strategy (MLaH) due to her husband’s passing with her child communicated English at home and learned Indonesian from school, relatives, and communities. Meanwhile, the second mother used English and Indonesian (mixing language strategy) to communicate with her daughter, using English as the dominant language. When her daughter started mixing the structure of the languages and experienced language confusion, the second mother minimized English use at home and shifted to using Indonesian as the dominant language at home. The findings also indicate that in nurturing children’s bilingualism, the mothers’ choices of practices involved five aspects of reflection: their philosophy, belief, theory, practice, and sociocultural aspect beyond practice. This study highlights that the process of nurturing children’s bilingual development is not a linear process. It involves a more complex relation of various factors that influence parents’ decision in (dis)continuing certain language policies.

Abstract

While studies on ideational metafunctions have been widely reported, research on transitivity analysis on students’ analytical exposition texts in EFL contexts is under-explored. The aims of this study are twofold: scrutinizing the process types and investigating the most dominant process in analytical exposition text as guided by Systemic Functional Linguistics theory. This study applied descriptive qualitative design focusing on experiential metafunction, comprising the processes of material, mental, verbal, relational, behavioral, and existential. The results show that among the six processes, the material process had the highest frequency of occurrence (45.6%), followed by the processes of relational (43.6%), mental (6.8%), verbal (1.94%), and finally, existential (1.94%). To conclude, the linguistic features of analytical exposition text, which is mental processes, are not accurately employed in the texts.  The pedagogical implications of this study are: 1) encouraging students to study analytical exposition text and 2) helping students to think critically. Based on the findings, we suggest that the teacher is required to teach the text explicitly. In this context, explicit teaching can be done using a genre-based approach. Therefore, the students can comprehend the analytical exposition text as a whole.

Abstract

Concerns over grade inflation have been raised since teachers tend to give students higher grades than they should. If the level of achievement does not correspond to an appropriate improvement in quality, it can raise concerns about the value of grades as a meaningful measure of academic achievement as well as the integrity and effectiveness of the education system. This research aims to find out how EFL teachers perceive grade inflation and what procedures and ethical considerations they follow in the grade inflation process. A descriptive qualitative study was employed using structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with two high school EFL teachers in Bandung. The result showed that although academic performance remains a central consideration, unconscious biases may influence grading when student behavior is factored into assessments. Moreover, teachers acknowledge the dilemma of doing grade inflation where they actually get pressure implicitly from the assessment system, which often takes the form of minimum competency standard (KKM/KKTP). However, they approach it positively, viewing it as an opportunity to enhance student abilities. Despite employing different procedures and assessment criteria in their grade inflation practices, both teachers incorporate ethics. This highlights the need for all teachers to understand and implement ethical grading practices.
