Abstract

Managing blood glucose levels is critical for preventing complications associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Physical activity has been shown to be an effective strategy for glucose control, with various forms of exercise yielding different results. This research aims to explore the effects of body weight training and series 7 diabetes dance on reducing blood glucose levels in patients with T2DM, and to compare the efficacy of these two interventions in achieving glucose control. The type of research was a quasi-experiment with a two groups pre-test post-test design. The series 7 diabetes dance group performed the exercise 4 times a week (duration: 170 minutes 8 seconds/week), while the body weight training group performed exercise 3 times a week (8 movements, number of repetitions close to failure, circuit system, 3 sets per training session). Both groups were doing an exercise program for three months. The research sample was for about 16 patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus (8 people per group, devided randomly), taken by using non probability sampling technique, purposive sampling type (effect size 1.6, significant level (α) 0.05 and Power 0.8). The data analysis used the paired sample t test and the independent t test with a significance level of α = 0.05.The results showed that 1) there is no significant effect of series 7 diabetes dance towards the decreasing the level of blood sugar of the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus), 2) there is a significant effect of body weight training towards the decreasing level of blood glucose of the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, 3) dody weight training is more effective in decreasing the level of blood glucose of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus compared to series 7 diabetes dance. Future research must be carried out as a true experiment with a larger number of samples and with the HbA1c research instrument.

Abstract

Background: Stroke is a cerebrovascular disease that can cause physical and cognitive impairments, including a high risk of depression. Medication adherence plays a crucial role in preventing complications and improving patients' quality of life. Objective: This study aims to describe the therapy and evaluate medication adherence among post-stroke outpatients in the recurrent and non-recurrent stroke groups at RSUD Taman Husada Kota Bontang. Methods: This study employs a cross-sectional design, involving a total of 152 patients, consisting of 119 non-recurrent stroke patients and 33 recurrent stroke patients. Data were collected through interviews, secondary data retrieval from medical records, and primary data obtained from the MMAS-8 (Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8) questionnaire to assess medication adherence levels. Data were analyzed descriptively, and a chi-square test was performed to examine the association between medication adherence and stroke recurrence. Results: The findings indicate that both recurrent and non-recurrent stroke groups were prescribed antiplatelet, anticoagulant, neuroprotective, and antihypertensive drugs. Additionally, lower medication adherence was more frequently observed in recurrent stroke patients compared to non-recurrent stroke patients (24% vs. 26%). Analysis of the MMAS-8 questionnaire items revealed that forgetting to take medication occurred in both groups, but was more common among non-recurrent stroke patients (23% vs. 9%). Conclusion: This study highlights the need for continuous monitoring of therapy profiles and efforts to improve medication adherence to prevent further complications in post-stroke patients. The findings emphasize the importance of ongoing evaluation and innovative medication education for post-stroke patients.

Abstract

Physical activity programs offered in Indonesian hospitals are often inadequate to help type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients meet international physical activity recommendations. This study aimed to identify T2D patients’ physical activity enablers and barriers, their preferences for, and experiences with, physical activity programming, with a view to developing future programs that are suited to these patients’ needs and preferences. Four focus groups were conducted with 28 patients (50% female) of the T2D clinic at the Local General Hospital of Yogyakarta. Discussions were thematically analysed in NVivo 10. The most reported types of physical activity were walking and participation in the hospital-based exercise program. Participants were motivated to be physically active for the health benefits and for social interactions. The main barriers to physical activity were a lack of enjoyment, the absence of knowledge about appropriate activities for T2D patients, and a shortage of time due to social and family obligations. Based on study participants’ preferences, future physical activity programs need to include educational components, regular clinical evaluations, consultations with health educators, and efforts to increase the reach of the programs. This study provides practical suggestions for physical activity programming that meet the needs of T2D patients in Indonesia.

Abstract

The incidence of persistent respiratory symptoms after acute post-COVID-19 infections, referred to as post-COVID-19 syndrome, is high. This study aimed to determine the feasibility and the acute effects of the combination of aerobic, strength and breathing exercises on pulmonary function and oxygen saturation among women post-COVID-19. This study involved 36 women post-COVID-19, with a mean age of 34.4±9.1 years, in a 45-minute aerobic, strength, and breathing exercise with an intensity of 65-75% maximum heart rate. The pulmonary function was measured with spirometry, while oxygen saturation was measured with an oximeter. These measurements were taken pre and post-exercise. Feasibility was determined as participants’ ability to complete the exercise and the incidence of adverse effects. A pair-t-test and effect size were assessed to estimate the acute effects of the exercise on Cohen’s d estimation. All patients complied, and no adverse events were reported, thus, supporting the feasibility of the exercise protocol. There was an increase in most post-exercise pulmonary function and oxygen saturation compared to pre-exercise (p <.001 to 0.03), with effect sizes ranging from 0.5 to 0.8, indicating medium to large effects of the exercise program on pulmonary functions and oxygen saturation. In conclusion, the combination of aerobic, strength, and breathing exercises is feasible and safe for women post-COVID-19 and potentially improves most pulmonary functions. Further research is recommended to evaluate the longer adaptation of the exercise on the pulmonary function in post-COVID-19.

Abstract

Patient compliance in adhering to stroke treatment recommendations becomes one of the factors influencing the occurrence of recurrent strokes. Depression in post-stroke patients inhibits functional brain recovery, increases the potential for recurrent strokes, lowers the quality of life, and raises the risk of death compared to patients without depression. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between drug therapy compliance and the level of depression on the occurrence of recurrent strokes in post-stroke patients. This cross-sectional study involved 60 patients aged between 30 and 85 years, all undergoing outpatient stroke treatment at a hospital in Indonesia. Recurrent stroke incidents were defined as experiencing a secondary stroke within 30 days after the initial stroke occurrence. Out of the total participants, 12 individuals had experienced recurrent strokes after their initial episode, while 48 patients had not experienced recurrent strokes up to the point of data collection. Medication adherence data were evaluated using the MMAS-8 (Morisky Medication Adherence Scale), and depression levels were measured using the PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9). The research results show that in the post-stroke patient group, the level of patient adherence is high at 41.7%, and in the recurrent stroke group, the level of patient adherence is moderate at 41.7%. Meanwhile, in the post-stroke patient group, the dominant depression level is low (50%), while in the recurrent stroke group, the dominant depression level is mild, followed by severe depression. The analysis indicates that medication adherence is not associated with stroke recurrence, while depression is related to stroke recurrence with an OR value of 2.060, p <0.05. Further research on more efficient monitoring methods and proper depression management is recommended to reduce the risk of stroke recurrence.
