Abstract

General background: Interactive digital media can improve student engagement in science learning. Specific background: At SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Taman, conventional textbooks dominated instruction while student engagement remained low. Knowledge gap: Limited evidence exists on combining e-modules with embedded Wordwall games for junior high temperature, heat, and expansion topics. Aims: This quasi-experimental study examined cognitive learning outcomes after implementing an e-module containing Wordwall activities compared with textbook instruction. Results: A saturated sample of 56 seventh-grade students (28 experimental, 28 control) showed higher N-Gain in the experimental group (0.56 vs 0.23) and a statistically significant difference (t test, p < 0.001). Novelty: The study integrates interactive Wordwall games within an e-module, linking multimedia elements to cognitive domain gains. Implications: Findings suggest that blended e-module and game-based activities offer a practical, engaging alternative for junior high science instruction, with considerations for internet access and offline adaptation.Highlights: Interactive e-module combined with Wordwall games. Significant N-Gain improvement in experimental group. Strong gains in higher-order cognitive levels (C5–C6). Keywords: E-Module, Wordwall, N-Gain, Cognitive Learning, Junior High

Abstract

This study examines the use of scrapbook media in elementary science learning. General Background: Science education in elementary school emphasizes cognitive development based on Bloom’s taxonomy to support students’ understanding of natural phenomena. Specific Background: In grade V at SD Muhammadiyah 1 Waru, student learning outcomes in the topic of the human respiratory system were below the minimum mastery criteria due to teacher-centered instruction and limited learning media. Knowledge Gap: Although previous studies have discussed scrapbook media, limited evidence is available regarding its application to cognitive indicators C1–C4 in elementary science contexts using N-Gain analysis. Aims: This research aims to determine the effect of scrapbook media on students’ cognitive learning outcomes. Results: Using a quantitative pre-experimental One Group Pretest-Posttest Design with 27 students, the mean pretest score was 60.8 and increased to 88.9 in the posttest, with an N-Gain score of 0.71 categorized as high. Improvements were observed across remembering, understanding, applying, and analyzing indicators. Novelty: The study provides structured cognitive indicator analysis of scrapbook-based instruction in the human respiratory system topic. Implications: Scrapbook media supports meaningful science learning and can be utilized as an alternative instructional medium in elementary classrooms. Keywords: Science Learning, Scrapbook Media, Cognitive Learning Outcomes, Elementary Education, N-Gain Analysis Key Findings Highlights Post-instruction scores showed a substantial increase compared to baseline results. Remembering and understanding indicators reached high gain categories. Applying and analyzing skills demonstrated moderate improvement trends.

Abstract

The urgency of this research arises from the challenges of teaching abstract concepts in science, such as the human digestive system, which often results in shallow understanding and low student motivation due to conventional 2D representations. This study investigates the effectiveness of integrating Virtual Reality (VR) literacy in Project-Based Learning (PjBL) scenarios to significantly improve students' learning enthusiasm compared to conventional e-module-based PjBL. This study uses a Quasi-Experimental Design with a Pre-Test-Post-Test Control Group Design and is framed within the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model. The dependent variable, learning enthusiasm, is measured using a validated scale based on the Vallerand Dualistic Model. Data are analyzed using a Two-Way Factorial Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), including assumption testing and Effect Size calculation. The final results show a significant mean difference in learning enthusiasm between the experimental group (VR-PjBL) and the control group (E-module-PjBL). These findings clearly demonstrate that VR literacy, when combined with PjBL, provides an immersive, personalized, and experience-based environment that acts as a powerful catalyst for intrinsic motivation and sustained enthusiasm for science learning.
