Abstract

The focus of this study is to find out how the PhET-assisted experiential learning technique affects students' Science Process Skills on energy-related material. A quantitative technique was applied in the research design, which was one group pretest posttest. This study will take place in SMP N 1 Sugio Lamongan. Purposive sampling was used in the sample selection process. There were 181 students in this study. The research included 66 students divided into two groups, class A and class B. However, data could not be gathered for 5 kids due to school activities, limiting the sample to 61 students. The insight gathering approach involves cognitive tests and observation of performance tests, followed by hypothesis evaluation with a paired simple t-test. The findings of this investigation show that learning using the PhET-assisted experimental approach to learning encounters a substantial impact on students' Science Process Skills in energy change material, with an average cognitive pretest score of 40.03, a posttest result of 78.95, and an N-gain value of 0.64, and obtained data from performance test observations with a pretest value of 35.65, a posttest result of 84.42, and an N-gain value of 0.75. The integration of experiential learning techniques aided by PhET has an impact on students' Science Process Skills, as evidenced by pretest posttest outcomes that have increased to the moderate level.

Abstract

Countless research has been published on the impact of covid-19 on improvements in teaching techniques, activities, and motivational beliefs. Most research refers to a human's response before learning without testing students' comprehension and literacy linked to covid-19. This study adopted a qualitative approach, with a questionnaire serving as the primary research tool. Alternatively, the current study looks into students' cognitive and portrays their mental model of COVID-19. At the Islamic University of Lamongan, 30 students from the science education department and 30 students from the environmental health department took part. Students are chosen as transformational leaders and liaisons between society's academic and social environments. The researchers gather data based on an open-ended assessment that evaluates the concepts, causation, methods, and strategies that must be implemented to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. Participants completed questionnaires prepared for educational purposes before and after learning. Inductive and iterative investigation of the descriptions of students' answers revealed cognitive outcomes and mental models. Each questionnaire form is then checked for validity using the SPSS v24 program. The authenticity of the questionnaire responses for each questionnaire > rcount (N = 60), indicating that each question is valid, whereas the reliability test using Cronbach's Alpha provides a score of 0.78 > 0.60, indicating that the questionnaire employed is trustworthy. Regarding educational, cognitive processes, the analysis shows that some colleagues believe that COVID-19 is a conspiracy, while others need to add sufficient scientific literacy to validate that COVID-19 is a disease. Even after learning, they can only make general ways to mitigate the propagation of COVID-19. The findings for student mental models revealed considerable changes in clarity and coherence, such as models at levels 1 through 5 with the highest student mental models. This study culminates with the implication that students require scientific literacy to effectively communicate about COVID-19 and check out false information in public.

Abstract

Improving students' skills in scientific argumentation is an important initiative aimed at producing high-quality graduates. Debate Based on Inquiry Learning (DBOIL) is a learning model developed to facilitate the development of students’ scientific argumentation skills. This learning model is constructed based on the advantages of inquiry and debate, as well as a solution to the limitations of both in optimally improving scientific argumentation skills. As an intervention integrated into learning activities, DBOIL must satisfy criteria such as relevance (content validity), consistency (construct validity), practicality, and effectiveness. This study aims to describe the content validity of DBOIL. This is based on expert judgment, with 25 validators consisting of experts, lecturers, and education practitioners. The data collected in this study were analyzed using the Aiken Methodology (Aiken's V) which was strengthened by calculating the 95% confidence interval (95% CI). The results showed that the content validity of DBOIL has been proven valid. This shows that DBOIL is worthy of further research to explore and reveal other criteria, namely consistency, practicality, and effectiveness.
