Abstract

Background: Human activity is largely related to thought processing or cognition. One of the most important components of cognition is memory. Individuals who undergo heavy activities, such as athletes, use a lot of memory in the subject’s activities, especially during competitions. The purpose of this study was to find out whether there was a correlation between the capability of short term memory with the performance of an athlete during a competition, especially those measured by achievements. Methods: This study was an analytic observational correlation study with a cross-sectional design and involved 201 athletes as respondents from 12 branches of sports. The study was conducted in the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) building from September to November 2015. Digit Span Forward and Backward were used to collect short term memory data and was performed after a consent form and the respondent’s identity was recorded. The athlete’s achievements data was gathered by an interview and recapitulation of athlete’s achievements in the last five years. Results: OA total of 186 data was analyzed and found a negative and  insignificant correlation between achievement and short-term memory based on digit span tests both forward (r=0.095 p=0.196) and backward(r=0.039 p=0.196). Conclusions: There is no correlation between short term memory and the achievements of an athlete.

Abstract

Background: Long-term insufficient nutritional needs will directly impact on the development and maturation of brain function. Disruption of development and maturation process in the brain is associated with decreased cognitive abilities. Frequently, the effect of long-term nutritional insufficiency has also height deficits called stunting. This study aimed to compare the short-term memory between stunted and non-stunted groups. Methods: A comparative study was conducted on 30 children in a non stunted group and 30 children in a stunted group. Children in both groups were selected from one of the elementary schools in Jatinangor using the simple random sampling method toward 3–5 for grade and 8–10 for age groups. The measurement of memory aspects for short-term memory used the Digit Span Test (forward and backward) and Simbol Modality Test. Results: The collected data were in normal and not normal distribution because the statistical test  used the independent-t test and Mann-Whitney. The mean memory score comparison between group 1 and group 2 on Digit Span Test Forward was 5.33:5.33 (p=0.994), Digit Span test Backward was 2.73:2.60 (p=0.440), and Symbol Modality Test was 20.90:19.60 (p=0.347).Conclusions: There is no significant difference in short-term memory between stunted and non–stunted groups, due to some confounding factors such as, environmental aspect, parent’s education level, socioeconomic, and genetic factors.

Abstract

Background: Senior High Schools with Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional (RSBI) scheme are senior high schools that pilot international standards in learning methods and high curriculum targets. This factor may lead to a rise of anxiety amongst students, both for students in Natural Sciences major and Social Studies major. There are three factors which cause anxiety in the school environment, namely: dissatisfaction towards the curriculum, the teacher, and the school management. Methods: This study used retrospective cohort design. Subjects were selected using the convenience sampling method. Natural Sciences students (n=32) and Social Studies students (n=14) had their anxiety level measured using the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale. The dissatisfaction towards the school environment factors was assessed using a school evaluation questionnaire. Results: The anxiety measurement showed that students in both Natural Sciences and Social Studies major experienced severe anxiety (Natural Sciences vs. Social Studies: 75% vs. 86%). The study results based on the school evaluation questionnaire showed dissatisfactions towards the three school environmental factors (curriculum factor, Natural Sciences vs. Social Studies: 59% vs. 64%; teacher factor, Natural Sciences vs. Social Studies: 3% vs. 43%; school management factor, Natural Sciences vs. Social Studies: 3% vs. 14%). The chi-square test results showed that the difference in the anxiety levels between the students of Natural Sciences and Social Studies majors was insignificant (p>0.05).Conclusions: Students of Natural Sciences and Social Studies majors of senior high schools with RSBI scheme experienced severe anxiety. However, there is no strong evidence that the school environment causes this severe anxiety. Keywords: Anxiety Level, Natural Sciences, Senior High School with RSBI Scheme, School Environment Factors, Social Studies Perbedaan Tingkat Kecemasan antara Siswa Kelas Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Siswa Kelas Sosial Berdasarkan Faktor Lingkungan Sekolah di Sekolah Menengah Atas Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf InternasionalLatar Belakang: Sekolah Menengah Atas Rintisan Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional (SMA RSBI) adalah sekolah menengah atas yang menggunakan standar internasional dalam metode pembelajaran dan kurikulum.  Faktor ini dapat menyebabkan kenaikan kecemasan di kalangan siswa, baik bagi siswa kelas Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan siswa kelas Ilmu Sosial. Abstract

The increasing number of elderly and elderly life expectancy is a challenge for health workers. Decreased cardiac endurance, muscle strength and increased incidence of inflammation will occur in the elderly as we get older. health cardio exercises series-I is an aerobic exercise that has moderate intensity and is carried out for 30 minutes, research is needed to analyze the effect on cardiac endurance, muscle strength and decrease plasma TNF-α levels in the elderly. Research design with experimental method, pre-test and posttest design approach. The study was conducted for 4 weeks on 25 samples which were divided into 3 groups of frequency of health cardio exercises series-I to measure endurance of the heart. A 6-minute road test and muscle strength were used for hand grip strength dynamometer, test back and leg dynamometer. Measurement of plasma TNF-α levels is carried out using the Elisa method. The data was then analyzed using paired t-test to see differences before and after health cardio exercises series-I. The results showed health cardio exercises series-I performed 3x / mg can increase the heart's endurance compared to the frequency of 4x / mg and 5x / mg (-16.11 vs 15.62 vs -47.62 meters). health cardio exercises series-I frequency of 3x / mg and 4x / mg can increase back muscle strength (pvalue= 0.019, p <0.05) and the frequency of 5x /mg can increase the strength of attractive shoulder muscles. (p-value=0.033, p<0.05). Health cardio exercises series-I performed 3x / mg, 4x / mg and 5x / mg did not have a significant effect on plasma TNF-α protein expression in the elderly (0.506 vs 0.856 vs. 0.382, p<0.05). It is suggested that the elderly can do I-1 series heart exercise with a frequency of 3x / mg to increase the heart's lung endurance and back muscle strength, a health cardio exercises series-I 4x / mg series to increase muscle strength of the back back, a series of health cardio exercises series-I frequency of 5x / mg to increase attractive shoulder muscle strength.

Abstract

Body fat composition reflected by body fat percentage (BF%) is one of the important components in disease risk evaluation. Among the methods available to measure BF%, skinfold calipers (SKF) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) are the most commonly used. The study was conducted to evaluate the difference in body fat composition measurement between SKF and BIA methods among professors. This study analyzed secondary data from the health evaluation of Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD) professors. This study involved 72 professors (50 male, 22 female) after fitted into the inclusion and exclusion criteria. BF% was measured among UNPAD professors using SKF and BIA. After obtaining agreement by Bland-Altman Plot, the data were analyzed by muliple paired-t test according to gender, physical activity level and body mass index (BMI) categories. The study showed no significant difference in BF% between SKF and BIA in overall population, between gender and physical activity level (p>0.05). For BMI, the only category that showed significant difference in BF% between the 2 methods was obese I group (p=0.001). In conclusion, there is no significant difference in BF% between SKF and BIA methods according to gender, physical activity levels and BMI categories except for obese I group.

Abstract

The aging process is recognized by the decreases of the body functions which is caused by molecular and cellular damages. The population which is mostly affected by this aging process is elderly. In elderly, it is most likely that tissue oxigenation decreases due to the reduction of haemoglobin level and oxygen saturation (SpO2).This study aimed to evaluate  the correlation between the hemoglobin concentration and SpO2 in the elderly professors in Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), Bandung. This was cross sectional study using secondary data from medical records of the elderly professors. One hundred and eight data of the professors (84 males and 24 females) who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were used in this study.Spearman’s Rank correlation test was used to analyze the data of total subjects and male professors group, while Pearson correlation test was used to analyze the data of female professors group. Correlation test between hemoglobin concentration and SpO2 resulted in an insignificant results in male professors (r = 0.028; p = 0.801), female professors (r = 0.132; p = 0.538), and total subjects (r = 0.036; p = 0.712).  In conclusion, there is no correlation between hemoglobin concentration and SpO2 in the elderly professors of UNPAD, Bandung.

Abstract

The effect of hydration protocol and hydration status on lower leg muscle strength, attention, and passing of youth futsal athletes  AbstractThe purpose of this study was to determine the effect of hydration protocol and hydration status on the performance of lower leg muscle strength, attention, and passing of futsal athletes. The method used was quantitative analytic with pretest (before the implementation of hydration protocol) and post-test (after three weeks of hydration protocol implementation) 22 futsal athletes at Mayasari Academy Bandung. The hydration protocol given was that the subjects consumed 500 mL of water 1–2 hours before exercise, 250–500 mL of water 15 minutes before training, and 500 mL – 2 L of water for 1 hour of training with drinking intervals every 20 minutes. Bodyweight measurements, before and after training, using Tanita Body Composition Scales to determine hydration status based on WHO categories. The performance measured was the strength of the lower leg muscles with a leg dynamometer, attention with the Grid Concentration Test (GCT), and the calculation of the number of passes (against the wall as far as 2 meters) for 30 seconds. Data analysis used paired t-test and two-way ANOVA to determine the effect of the hydration protocol on the performance. The results showed that the hydration protocol affected increasing lower leg muscle strength (p = 0.012), attention (p = 0.026), and passing (p = 0.001) in futsal athletes, but not with hydration status.
