Abstract

The study “Conceptual Metaphor in Bublé’s Call Me Irresponsible Album” explores how metaphors in song lyrics can complicate understanding. This research categorizes and analyzes metaphor types found in Michael Bublé’s album, specifically focusing on 13 songs such as “The Best Is Yet to Come,” “Everything,” and “That’s Life.” Lyrics were sourced from Genius.com, and a descriptive qualitative approach guided by Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory was employed. Three main types of conceptual metaphors structural, orientational, and ontological were identified in the analysis. Structural metaphors (56 instances), orientational metaphors (42 instances), and ontological metaphors (39 instances) were found to compare different concepts, often relating to themes of love and relationships. These metaphors contribute connotative, affective, and social meanings to the lyrics, influencing interpretations. The study highlights the importance of metaphor analysis in understanding how metaphors enrich song lyrics but also pose challenges in interpretation. By systematically categorizing and scrutinizing metaphors, this research enhances our comprehension of the nuanced meanings embedded in Bublé’s music, shedding light on the intricate interplay between language, metaphor, and thematic content in popular music.

Abstract

This study examines expressive speech acts in the comments section of One Direction’s YouTube video titled “10 Years of One Direction.” It aims to identify the types of expressive acts used, explore their communicative purposes, and determine which type is most frequently employed. The research uses Searle and Vanderveken’s (1985) classification—which includes acts such as thanking, apologizing, congratulating, praising, sorrowing, boasting, blaming, and greeting—and Leech’s (2014) categorization of speech act functions (competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive). Using a descriptive qualitative approach supported by basic quantitative analysis, the study analyzes 70 selected comments from the video. Results show eight types of expressive speech acts: thanking, congratulating, praising, sorrowing, blaming, happiness, boasting, and regretting. These acts mostly serve convivial, collaborative, and conflictive functions. Notably, sorrowing was the most frequent, appearing in 28.57% of the comments, indicating a strong nostalgic and emotional response among fans. The findings highlight how digital fan communities use expressive language to share emotions and build collective memories.

Abstract

This article entitled Structural Metaphor in The Novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, aims to identify and analyze structural metaphors and their underlying meanings. The data were collected from dialogues and narrative passages, specifically phrases, clauses, and sentences within the novel. Employing a documentation method and note-taking technique, the study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach. The analysis was presented in informal through descriptive discussion in paragraph form. The theories applied in this study were the theory of metaphor proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (2003) to analyze the type of metaphor, especially structural metaphor. This study focused on finding structural metaphors out of three types of metaphors, and also focused on analyzing the meaning of the metaphor. The result of the study shows that there are representations of structural metaphor in the novel, and all the meanings implied by each of the metaphors are found, highlighting their central role in expressing grief and emotional transformation. These metaphors illuminate the protagonist's internal struggles and reveal universal aspects of the human experience, such as loss, grief, resilience, and the search for connection.

Abstract

With its rich array of tourist attractions, the Gianyar region in Bali features numerous outdoor signs that contribute to its complex linguistic landscape. This study investigates linguistic landscape patterns and text typologies using a qualitative research method based on observation, note-taking, and photography. The analysis follows the linguistic landscape framework by Landry and Bourhis (1997) and the multilingual text typology by Reh (2004). Findings reveal that the linguistic landscape of Gianyar’s tourist sites falls into cultural, village, museum, nature, and man-made categories. Outdoor signage patterns are classified as top-down and bottom-up. Top-down signs predominantly feature duplicating and fragmentary text typologies, while bottom-up signs incorporate duplicating, fragmentary, and overlapping structures. These findings enhance the understanding of the linguistic landscape in Gianyar, providing insights into its multilingual environment, particularly within public spaces and tourist destinations.

This data was also analysed based on the context of the situation from Holmes's theory. The result shows that there are thirteen data from the conversation in the movie to perform the question tag. The feature of question tags that occurs dominantly in the movie is a modal tag. The six cases comprise a modal tag of two cases, a facilitative tag of two cases, and a softeners tag of two cases. Meanwhile, for the context of the situation factors that most influence the speaker to use question tags are participant, setting, topic, and function. Based on the result of the study, it is fruitful to suggest the students of English Department to do further analysis about the three of question tags used in other resources like movies, novels, or articles.
