Abstract

Parental divorce can have psychological impacts on adolescents, such as sadness, anger, social withdrawal, and relationship trauma. Therefore, resilience is needed to help adolescents adapt, manage stress, and recover from these conditions. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects were selected using purposive sampling with the criteria of adolescents aged 15-25 years whose parents had divorced. Data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews conducted with four research subjects. The results showed that some subjects experienced more severe psychological pressure, such as relationship trauma, anxiety, and thoughts of ending their lives. However, over time all four subjects were able to develop resilience in dealing with these conditions. The most prominent aspects of resilience were optimism, empathy, and self-efficacy, which helped the subjects view the future more positively and continue their lives in a better direction. This process was also supported by spiritual approaches, social support, and professional assistance. At the early stage of parental divorce, the subjects experienced difficulties in emotional regulation and impulse control; however, these abilities gradually developed through the adjustment process, enabling them to manage their emotions and recover from difficult experiences.

Abstract

Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by intense emotional changes, making emotional regulation an essential aspect of adolescents’ psychological adjustment. One factor presumed to influence emotional regulation is sibling rivalry. This study aims to examine the relationship between sibling rivalry and emotional regulation among adolescents. The research employed a quantitative correlational design. The sample consisted of 105 students from grades X and XI at Panca Budi Private High School Medan, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the sibling rivalry scale and emotional regulation scale, then analyzed using Pearson Product Moment correlation with IBM SPSS Statistics version 27. The results showed a correlation coefficient of r = -0.788 with p < 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant negative relationship between sibling rivalry and emotional regulation among adolescents. This means that higher levels of sibling rivalry are associated with lower emotional regulation, and vice versa. These findings suggest that the quality of sibling relationships plays an important role in adolescents’ emotional regulation development and may serve as a basis for family-based interventions to support adolescent emotional well-being.

Abstract

Changes in educational policies in Indonesia in recent years have often created uncertainty for students. During adolescence, high academic demands, particularly when facing examinations, frequently trigger stress and anxiety. In this context, social support from parents, peers, and teachers plays an important role in helping students manage the pressures they experience. This study aims to examine the relationship between social support and anxiety among students of SMA Global Prima Medan. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The subjects consisted of 142 students selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. The instruments used were the social support scale and the anxiety scale. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation. The results indicated a significant negative relationship between social support and anxiety, with r = –0.179 and p = 0.033 (p < 0.05). This means that the higher the social support received by students, the lower their anxiety levels. The coefficient of determination (R²) is 0.035, indicating that social support contributes 3.2% to anxiety, while the remaining 96.8% is influenced by other factors outside this study. In conclusion, social support plays a role in reducing student anxiety, although its contribution is relatively small. These findings emphasize the importance of parents, peers, and teachers in creating a supportive environment for students.

Abstract

Divorce often leaves wounds or deep trauma that affects the emotional development and social relationships of children into adulthood. These wounds can cause heartache or resentment which can affect the psychology of the victim of divorce. This research aims to investigate the impact of forgiveness from parental divorce on early adults. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach through in-depth interviews with four female respondents aged 20–24 who experienced parental divorce in childhood. The results of the study found that the causes of divorce were domestic violence, infidelity, and poor communication. The psychological impacts included trauma, lack of self-confidence, loss of a father figure, verbal and physical violence, difficulties in establishing social and romantic relationships, and economic difficulties. Two respondents experienced verbal violence because their faces resembled their father's, with different perpetrators of violence being their mother and grandmother. This study also found that respondents were able to achieve forgiveness through four main phases: the uncovering phase, the decision phase, the work phase, and the deepening phase. One respondent experienced the uncovering phase twice due to divorce and the death of her father. Two of the respondents achieved forgiveness due to religious influence, while others did so through consultation with psychologists and psychiatrists, as well as support from friends, and the families of both their father and mother.

Abstract

Changes in family structure due to divorce and conflict have increased the number of adolescents living in broken homes. This condition not only has an impact on the social aspect, but also on the emotional development of adolescents. This study aims to examine the relationship between family functioning and emotional regulation of broken home adolescents. The study used a correlational quantitative approach involving 135 broken home adolescents  as research subjects. Data collection was carried out using the family functioning scale and the emotion regulation scale. The results of data analysis with the Pearson product moment correlation technique show that there is a significant positive relationship between family functioning and emotion regulation ability, where the better the functioning of the family, the better the ability of adolescents to manage emotions. In contrast, families that do not function optimally tend to be associated with a teen's low ability to manage emotions. These findings confirm the importance of the role of the family in supporting adolescent emotional development and can be the basis for the development of psychological interventions and educational programs that focus on strengthening family function and emotion regulation skills.

Abstract

Academic examinations often trigger significant academic anxiety, especially among twelfth grade students who are preparing to take the SNBT examination. This condition is further intensified by the pressure of complex subject matter, intense competition,  high expectations for academic achievement, and the implementation of TKA examinations. Low self-efficacy is considered one of the main internal factors that contribute to the increase in academic anxiety experienced by students. Therefore, the goal of this study is to analyze the relationship between self-efficacy and academic anxiety among twelfth grade students who are preparing to face their SNBT examinations. The research method used in this study was a quantitative correlational approach. The population of this study consisted of 424 twelfth grade students from SMA Negeri 5 Medan. The research sample included 191 students who were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using Likert scale instruments consisting  of an academic anxiety scale and a self-efficacy scale, both of which had been tested for their validity and reliability. Data analysis was conducted using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation technique with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics version 26 software. The results showed a correlation coefficient value of r=-0,441 with a significance level of 0,000 (p<0,05). These result indicate that there is a significant negative relationship between self-efficacy and academic anxiety. Based on the R Square value of 0,194, self-efficacy contributed 19,4% to academic anxiety, while the remaining 80,6% was influenced by the other variables outside this study. Overall, most students were categorized at a moderate level for both self-efficacy and academic anxiety.

Abstract

Premarital sexual behavior among adolescents has become an important issue due to its potential psychological, social, and educational impacts. One factor that may reduce adolescents’ involvement in risky sexual behavior is father involvement, which includes emotional support, supervision, communication, and active participation in children’s development. This study aimed to examine the relationship between father involvement and premarital sexual behavior among adolescents at Immanuel Christian Senior High School in Medan City. This research employed a quantitative correlational design. The participants consisted of 105 male and female students who were currently involved in dating relationships and were selected using purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through Likert-type scales, including a 39-item premarital sexual behavior scale and a 40-item father involvement scale. Data analysis was conducted using Pearson Product-Moment correlation with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. The results showed a significant negative relationship between father involvement and premarital sexual behavior, with a correlation coefficient of r = -0.239 and a significance value of p = 0.014 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that adolescents who experience higher levels of father involvement tend to show lower engagement in premarital sexual behavior. Low father involvement is associated with a greater tendency toward risky sexual behavior among adolescents. Father involvement contributes to adolescents’ behavioral regulation through guidance, supervision, and emotional closeness. In conclusion, father involvement plays an important protective role in reducing premarital sexual behavior among adolescents. This study highlights the importance of strengthening fathers’ active participation in adolescent development.

Abstract

The rapid development of social media has transformed the patterns of social interaction among adolescents and students, particularly in self-disclosure behavior within increasingly open and intensive digital environments. This phenomenon creates a social paradox in which high levels of digital communication activity are not always accompanied by the fulfillment of individuals’ emotional needs, leading to psychological loneliness. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between self-disclosure and loneliness among adolescent social media users and to understand the psychological dynamics emerging from digital interactions. The research employed a quantitative correlational approach involving 193 respondents consisting of male and female students within the adolescent age range. Data were collected using psychological scales measuring self-disclosure and loneliness and were analyzed through normality, linearity, Pearson correlation, and partial correlation tests. The findings revealed no significant relationship between self-disclosure and loneliness overall, indicating that self-disclosure is not a single determining factor of adolescent loneliness. However, several social dimensions demonstrated significant partial correlations, particularly the social others dimension with aspects of valence, breadth, accuracy, and depth of self-disclosure. These findings suggest that digital interaction tends to emphasize social validation needs rather than the fulfillment of deeper emotional connections. This study provides important implications for the development of counseling services, digital literacy programs, and adolescent mental health support within educational settings.
