Abstract

Improving students' skills in writing English is considered challenging for non-native students because of their lack of knowledge in building ideas, vocabularies, and the organization of the text. Therefore, this article aims to analyze and describe whether technology-based integration can develop students’ narrative writing. The method used to analyze the text was an experimental approach with sixty students taking Writing II subject at Nommensen University Pematangsiantar, Indonesia. Thirty students involved in the experimental group were provided with the technology-based environment (HyperStudio), while the other thirty students in the control group were not. The results of the study showed there was a significant improvement in the students’ narrative writing in the experimental group. The results of the study are expected to give great insights and knowledge for creative pedagogy in the classroom. However, the researcher suggests that future studies use a larger sample with a diverse range of learning styles, age groupings, and gender. In addition, future researchers should also look into the benefits of using HyperStudio across the curriculum in Indonesia, including science, social studies, history, geography, and other subjects.

Abstract

The low interest in reading makes the students have less reading frequency, thus the students are not much experienced in reading correctly. This problem leads them to have a low level of comprehension skill. This research is intended to check and find out whether the students can improve their level of comprehension skill after being given a certain teaching completed with some treatments. The research investigates the impact of using illustrations and its effects on students’ attitude. The data are in the form of scores and students’ opinions. Score data is obtained from the result of pretest and posttest which are calculated quantitatively, while questionnaire and interview are analyzed qualitatively to support the explanation. The results show that there is significant enhancement in student reading skills not only of the expert readers but also of the average readers and of poor readers.

Abstract

This study aimed to report the voice of mentor teachers towards pre-service English teachers’ professional development viewed from relational, developmental, and contextual components during school teaching practice programs. The study employed a descriptive case study. Utilizing the purposive sampling technique, four mentor teachers from public and private junior secondary schools participated in this study. The instrument used was an interview protocol, and the data were collected through a one-on-one interview using a voice recorder for gathering a comprehensive perspective towards the pre-service English teachers’ professional learning. The data were analyzed by using a coding system and employing coding cycles. The findings showed that all components—relational, developmental, and contextual—were found. The mentor teachers voiced their perspective and stressed the developmental component because they found that the pre-service English teachers experienced hindrances both externally and internally regarding teaching performance, classroom management, and motivation. These hindrances contribute to their professional development. This present study result implies a policy implementation related to the synchronization between collaborating schools and universities. The synchronization can be in terms of preparing the mentor teachers and providing the pre-service English teachers a supportive mentorship. Furthermore, the collaboration between schools and universities is also required in the exchange of valuable sources concerning educational instruction trends such as evidence-based practices in peripheral contexts, English teaching for students with diverse cultural backgrounds and academic competencies, and dissemination of best practices that have been implemented in schools for the formulation of teaching theories being taught through course subjects at teacher education departments in the universities.

Abstract

The use of phonics approaches for teaching early reading skills to young learners in Indonesian EFL classes seems to be on the rise. However, as phonics relies on students’ ability in corresponding letters and the sounds of the letters, the fact that the English pronunciation for the alphabet is different from that of Bahasa Indonesia could be an obstacle in a way that it might lead students to confusion. To cope with this problem, some teachers are found to have applied phonics songs in order to help their young learners. This paper aims to report teachers’ perspectives on their experiences in utilizing phonics songs to help young learners in Indonesia develop their early reading skills. A case study is employed by using instruments of questionnaires and interviews involving 20 EFL teachers in Indonesia. The results show the teachers’ positive perspectives on the utilization of phonics songs in early reading classes as well as its benefits and drawbacks which can be aspects that teachers should seriously consider when choosing the most suitable phonics songs to be applied in young learners’ classes in Indonesia.

Abstract

ABSTRACTProject-Based Learning (PjBL) has gained popularity as an approach to language teaching over the recent decade. However, previous studies have highlighted that PjBL is often applied in diverse contexts. This study aims to identify the key concepts and stages of PjBL implementation in teaching writing within the context of higher education in Indonesia. The research approach was a case study that utilized observation and interviews. The participant was a lecturer who actively incorporated PjBL into their teaching. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal several stages of PjBL in teaching writing, including posing essential questions, planning and scheduling, outlining, developing the outline into a draft, monitoring progress, presenting the first draft, reviewing and editing, finishing, and publishing, and evaluating and reflecting. Furthermore, the study identifies key concepts of PjBL in teaching writing, such as driving questions, process and product orientation, student ownership, extended project duration, natural integration of skills, dual commitment to language and learning, group work obligation, student responsibility for information gathering, processing, and reporting, assumed new roles and responsibilities for students and teachers, collaboration, and reflection. This study also sheds light on how PjBL can be applicable in teaching writing.ABSTRAKPembelajaran Berbasis Proyek (PjBL) telah menjadi metode pengajaran bahasa yang populer dalam dekade terakhir. Abstract

This study uses bibliometric analysis to assess the most relevant themes linked to Writing Learning Outcomes, allowing readers to gain a holistic understanding of WLO and the most recent developments in the field. Publication data from Scopus is employed since it is considered as the gold standard for Bibliometric analysis, allowing for the visualization of information concerning the network of nations, keywords, authors, and trends. On September 14, 2022, this study examined 1,053 files spanning the years 1980 and 2022. The findings revealed that the quantity of published works on WLO generally increased, albeit with some years showing a modest decline. Analysing search terms for "Writing Learning Outcomes" (WLO) reveals a central interest in topics including learning goals, assessment, and instructional strategies. Important WLO publications are also discussed in the study. This study presented bibliometric analysis on the relationship between the most prominent themes in WLO research and classroom practice to be used for finding novelty in the area of WLO research.
