Abstract

ABSTRACTCommunication whether one way or two ways tends to have intention that needs to beconvey to hearer from the speaker. Furthermore, to what extend the intention can beunderstood it is based on the context that can acknowledged by sides, the speaker and hearer.Movie, as one of the media to show how context-based communication conducted, reflectsthe communication of the speaker whether it is understood by the hearer. This articleformulates the utterances of the main character in The Imitation Game movie and the effectof it to the hearer which theoretically known as illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. Themethod used in collecting data is observation method, while in analyzing the data,qualitative method is used. The theory used are the theory by Leech (1983) and Searle(1979); and supported by Austin (1962). It is found that all of type of directive illocutionaryact, as ordering, asking, requesting and prohibiting, is found in the utterances and all of theutterances lead in into the act of the hearer in giving reaction upon the utterance, whether itis supporting the intention or not.Keywords: utterances, illocutionary act, perlocutinary act, main character, movie.ABSTRAKKomunikasi, baik itu satu arah ataupun dua arah cenderung mempunyai maksud yang ingindisampaikan ke pendengarnya dari seorang pembicara. Sejauh mana maksud itu dipahamitergantung terhadap konteks yang dapat dipahami oleh kedua belah pihak, pembicara danpendengarnya. Film, sebagai satu media yang menunjukkan bagaimana komunikasiberlandaskan konteks dilakukan, mencerminkan komunikasi yang dilakukan olehpembicara kepada pendengarnya, dipahami atau tidak. Artikel ini mengangkat ujaran yangdiucapkan oleh karakter utama dalam film The Imitation Game dan efek yang diberikandari ujaran tokoh utama kepada pendengarnya, secara teor dsebut dengan tindak ilokusidan tidak perlokusi. Metode yang digunakan dalam mengoleksi data adalah metodeobservasi, sementara dalam menganalisa data digunakan metode kualitatif. Theori yangdigunakan adalah teory yang dikemukakan oleh Leech (1983) dan Searle (1979); dan jugateori pendukung oleh Austin (1962). Dapat diketahui bahwa semua tipe tindak ilokusidirektif, yaitu ordering, asking, requesting, dan prohibiting datemukan dalam ujaran padakarakter utama. Ujaran tersebut berpengaruh terhadap tindakan dari pendengar dalambereaksi terhadap ujaran itu, baik itu memmenuhi maksud dari pendengar atau tidak.Kata kunci: ujaran, tidak ilokusi, tindak perlokusi, karakter utama, film.

Abstract

ABSTRACTPolitical discourse means the text and talk that related with political issues or activities. Thepolitical issues always become controversial in society, the way that makes certain issues becomecontroversial is the act of the actor of politics, as well as the statements delivered in the form ofpolitical speech. The existence of political speech is becoming an essential part in noticing theinfluence of particular political figures, placing his significant role in conducting a politicalmovement to the public, citizens, or particular group from various categories. Language strategy inpolitics is different and unique since it is used to gain attention and even change people perspective.Modes of persuasion plays a very important role in political speech which mainly aims at persuadingand convincing people. The modes of persuasion, often referred to as ethical strategies or rhetoricalappeals, are devices in rhetoric that classify the speaker's appeal to the audience. This study aims atidentifying and analyzing modes of persuasion used in President Joko Widodo’s Speech in 2018ASEAN World Economic Forum. The data were collected by using observation method and notetaking technique. Qualitative method was used to analyze the collected data. They were analyzedby using theory about modes of persuasion as proposed by Aristotle (1962) who divided modes ofpersuasion into ethos, pathos and logos. Our preliminary finding shows that modes of persuasionhas crucial role in delivering political speech since it has power to control people’s behavior.Keywords: persuasion, political speech, ethos, pathos, logosABSTRAKWacana politik adalah teks dan pembicaraan yang berkaitan dengan masalah atau kegiatan politik.Isu politik selalu menjadi kontroversi di masyarakat, cara yang membuat isu tertentu menjadikontroversial adalah ulah para aktor politik, serta pernyataan yang disampaikan dalam bentukpidato politik. Keberadaan pidato politik menjadi bagian penting dalam memperhatikan pengaruhtokoh politik tertentu, menempatkan perannya yang signifikan dalam melakukan gerakan politikkepada masyarakat, warga negara, atau kelompok tertentu dari berbagai kategori. Strategi bahasadalam politik berbeda dan unik karena digunakan untuk menarik perhatian bahkan mengubah carapandang orang. Cara persuasi memainkan peran yang sangat penting dalam pidato politik yangterutama bertujuan untuk membujuk dan meyakinkan orang. Cara persuasi, sering disebut sebagaistrategi etis atau retoris, adalah alat retorika yang mengklasifikasikan daya tarik pembicara kepadaaudiens. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisis mode persuasi yangdigunakan dalam Pidato Presiden Joko Widodo di ASEAN World Economic Forum 2018.Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode observasi dan teknik mencatat. Metode kualitatifdigunakan untuk menganalisis data yang dikumpulkan. Mereka dianalisis dengan menggunakanteori tentang mode persuasi seperti yang dikemukakan oleh Aristoteles (1962) yang membagi modepersuasi menjadi ethos, pathos dan logos. Temuan awal kami menunjukkan bahwa mode persuasiLitera Jurnal Bahasa Dan Sastra 2020memiliki peran penting dalam menyampaikan pidato politik karena memiliki kekuatan untukmengontrol perilaku orang.Kata kunci: persuasi, pidato politik, etos, pathos, logo

Abstract

ABSTRACTSpeech acts are not only found in everyday life but also in the novel. The aims of this researchare to describe the types of directive illocutionary acts function in Fifty Shades Freed movieand to find out the type of directive illocutionary acts function which is mostly used by thecharacters in this novel. This is a descriptive qualitative research. The researcher usedobservation methods in collecting the data. There were some steps in collecting the data: readthe novel several times to understand the plot and examined the dialogue to distinguish thetypes of directive illocutionary act function that found in the utterance between the charactersin the movie. The researcher applied Searle (1979) to analyze the data. The result of theresearch shows that there are 27 utterances containing directive illocutionary acts function.Thedata were classified into four; ordering (21), forbidding (1), requesting (6), and suggesting (1).Of the total 27 directive illocutionary acts function, ordering are the most used types ofdirective illocutionary acts function because the character mostly expressed their utterances byordering.Keywords: Speech act, directive illocutionary act, Fifty Shades FreedABSTRAKTindak tutur tidak hanya ditemukan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari tetapi juga dalam novel.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan jenis-jenis fungsi tindak ilokusi direktif dalamfilm Fifty Shades Freed dan untuk mengetahui jenis fungsi tindak ilokusi direktif yang palingbanyak digunakan oleh para tokoh dalam novel ini. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitiankualitatif deskriptif. Peneliti menggunakan metode observasi dalam mengumpulkan data. Adabeberapa langkah dalam pengumpulan data: membaca novel beberapa kali untuk memahamiplot dan memeriksa dialog untuk membedakan jenis fungsi tindak ilokusi direktif yangditemukan dalam ucapan antara karakter dalam film. Peneliti menerapkan Searle (1979)untuk menganalisis data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 27 ujaran yangmengandung fungsi tindak ilokusi direktif. Data tersebut diklasifikasikan menjadi empat;memerintahkan (21), melarang (1), meminta (6), dan menyarankan (1). Dari total 27 fungsitindak ilokusi direktif, pengurutan merupakan jenis fungsi tindak ilokusi direktif yang palingbanyak digunakan karena karakter sebagian besar mengungkapkan tuturannya dengan caramemerintahkan.Kata kunci: Tindak tutur, tindak ilokusi direktif, Fifty Shades Freed

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe goal of this research is to find out the occurrence of onomatopoeia in the webtoon comicentitled The God of High School. People nowadays like reading comic books as a form of pleasure.Comic books are currently available in both hardcopy and digital formats, particularly over theinternet. The God of High School is a popular web comic among teenagers. Onomatopoeia refersto the use of words in comic books to reflect the noises and motions that occur in the panels. Theuse of an onomatopoeia word in a comic is significant because, unlike novels, comics have alimited amount of space in which to explain a scenario with a large number of phrases. This studywas analysed qualitatively by using theory from Bredin (1996) about the types of onomatopoeiaand theory from Thomas (1995) about the meaning. The findings of this study show that all typesof of onomatopoeia words occurred in the webtoon comic entitled The God of High School.Exemplary onomatopoeia is found more frequently than the other two forms, including 41 directonomatopoeia, 8 associative onomatopoeia, and 76 exemplary onomatopoeias. The total numberof words in the data is 125.Keywords: Onomatopoeia, linguistic, webcomicABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan kemunculan onomatopoeia dalam komik webtoon TheGod of High School. Orang-orang saat ini suka membaca buku komik sebagai bentuk kesenangan.Buku komik saat ini tersedia dalam format hardcopy dan digital, terutama melalui internet. TheGod of High School adalah webcomic yang populer di kalangan remaja. Onomatopoeia mengacupada penggunaan kata-kata dalam buku komik untuk mencerminkan suara dan gerakan yangterjadi di panel. Penggunaan kata onomatopoeia dalam komik sangat penting karena, tidak sepertinovel, komik memiliki ruang terbatas untuk menjelaskan skenario dengan sejumlah besar frasa.Penelitian ini dianalisis secara kualitatif menggunakan Theory dari Bredin (1996) tentang tipe darionomatopoeia dan untuk menganalisis maknanya menggunakna teori dari Thomas (1995).Berdasarkan hasil analisis, semua jenia onomatopoeia ditemukan dalam komik webtoon berjudulThe God of High School. Tipe exemplary onomatopoeia ditemukan lebih sering daripada duabentuk lainnya, antara lain 41 direct onomatopoeia, 8 associative onomatopoeia, dan 76 exemplaryonomatopoeia. Abstract

ABSTRACTThe aim this study is to describe the conflict of the main character Act of Vengeance in the movie.This study focused on explaining the types of conflicts that the main character faced in the movieAct of Vengeance and to analyze how the main character manages to settle conflict in the movieAct of Vengeance. The collected data were analyzed descriptively based on Kenney’s theory ofliterature (1966). The result of this study reveals that the conflicts faced by the main character canbe divided into internal conflict and external conflict. The sources of conflicts faced by the maincharacter are different opinions, incompatible roles, incompatible goals, limited resources. Theconflict management strategies applied are pacification, compromise, and creative integration.Conflict adds excitement and suspense to a story. As the plot unfolds, the readers start to wonderwhat will happen next, and how the character will handle the situation. It can be concluded thatthe conflict of the main character has important roles in created the movie story.Keywords: Main character, Movie, and conflict.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan konflik karakter utama Act of Vengeance dalamfilm tersebut. Penelitian ini difokuskan untuk menjelaskan jenis-jenis konflik yang dihadapi tokohutama dalam film Act of Vengeance dan menganalisis bagaimana tokoh utama mengelola konflikdalam film Act of Vengeance. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis secara deskriptif berdasarkan teorisastra Kenney (1966). Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa konflik yang dihadapi olehtokoh utama dapat dibagi menjadi konflik internal dan konflik eksternal. Sumber konflik yangdihadapi oleh tokoh utama adalah perbedaan pendapat, peran yang tidak sesuai, tujuan yangtidak sesuai, sumber daya yang terbatas. Strategi manajemen konflik yang diterapkan adalahpasifikasi, kompromi, dan integrasi kreatif. Konflik menambah kegembiraan dan ketegangan padasebuah cerita. Saat plot terungkap, pembaca mulai bertanya-tanya apa yang akan terjadiselanjutnya, dan bagaimana karakter akan menangani situasi tersebut. Dapat disimpulkan bahwakonflik tokoh utama memiliki peran penting dalam pembuatan cerita film.Kata kunci: Tokoh utama, Film, dan konflik.

Abstract

ABSTRACTPlot is the literary term that describes the element of a story. This research concerns toanalyze about plot elements in the novel entitled“The Giver” by Lois Lowry. Observationmethod are used in collecting the data by following several steps those are by finding thekeyword belongs to each elements of plot, reading repeatedly, understanding the storywhile taking note. In this study, the data were analyzed descriptive qualitatively by usingthe theory from Freytag as cited in Macewan (1900). The finding of this research showthat this novel applied dramatic plot which are consists of several elements namely risingmovement, climax, falling action, and resolution. Exposition is talking about Jonas whoare in eleven years old and become twelve in December live in community with hisparents and little sister, but they all do not have blood relation because all children bornfrom biological mother. He was frightened, but he decided not frightened but toapprehensive to happening in December. Rising movement happened when Jonas haveasiggment from Chief Elder to become a receiver of memory, climax happened whenJonas realizes his father “releases” the newchildren actually that Kill. Falling actionhappened when Jonas escape from Community to take Gabriel in order to save Gabrielfrom being “Release” and the last catastrophe or resolution happened Jonas and gabrielride to another place he sees distance light and hear people singing.Keyword: plot, plot type, The Giver novelABSTRAKAlur adalah istilah sastra yang menggambarkan unsur cerita. Penelitian ini bertujuanuntuk menganalisis elemen yang menyusun alur cerita dalam novel Lois Lowry “TheGiver”. Peneliti ini menggunakan metode observasi dalam pengumpulan data denganmenerapkan langkah-langkah yaitu mencari kata kunci yang menunjukkan bagian darielemen-elemen, membaca berkali-kali, memahami cerita, dan mencatat. Penelitian inidianalisis secara deskriptif kualitatif menggunakan teori dari Freytag yang dikutip dariMacewan (1900). Jenis plot yang diterapkan dalam novel adalah plot dramatis yangterdiri dari beberapa elemen yaitu cerita permulaan, penanjakan, klimaks, keteganganmenurun, dan peleraian. Permulaan diawali dengan memperkenalkan karakter ceritaketika Jonas berusia sebelas tahun yang menjadi dua belas bulan desember tinggal diKomunitas bersama orang tua dan adik perempuannya, yang mereka tidak memilikihubungan darah karena semua anak lahir dari ibu kandung. Ia takut, dan ia berusahatidak takut tapi bersemangat untuk menunggu apa yang terjadi dibulan desember. Ceritapenanjakan terjadi saat Jonas mendapat penugasan dari Chief Elder menjadi penerimamemory, klimaksnya terjadi saat Jonas menyadari ayahnya “melepaskan” anak-anakbaru itu sebenarnya membunuh. Ketegangan menurun terjadi saat Jonas melarikan diridari Komunitas untuk mengambil Gabriel untuk menyelamatkan Gabriel dari "Lepaskan dan pertikaian atau peleraian terjadi ketika Jonas dan Gabriel naik ke tempat lain, Iamelihat cahaya dikejauhan dan mendengar orang bernyanyi.Kata Kunci: alur, jenis alur, novel The Giver

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bahasa kiasan yang terdapat dalam AlkitabPerjanjian Baru. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis bahasa kiasan danartinya dalam Alkitab Perjanjian Baru. Ada dua teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaituteori pertama yang dikemukakan oleh Knickerbocker dan Reninger (1974) yang berjudulInterpreting Literature dan teori kedua yang dikemukakan oleh Leech (1981) berjudulSemantic: The Study of Meaning. Metode yang digunakan dalam pengumpulan data adalahmetode observasi. Penulis mengumpulkan data-data Alkitab Perjanjian Baru dengan membacadan memahami Alkitab Perjanjian Baru pada buku “The Gideon’s International”, sertamencatat dan mengklasifikasikan frasa dan kalimat yang mengandung bahasa kiasan. Penulismenganalisis data secara deskriptif dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Setelahmenganalisis kalimat-kalimat dalam Alkitab, penulis menemukan beberapa bahasa kiasan yangdigunakan dalam Alkitab Perjanjian Baru. Ada tujuh jenis bahasa kiasan yang digunakandalam Alkitab Perjanjian Baru, yaitu 9 dari Metafora (32%), 4 dari Simile (14%), 1 dariPersonifikasi (4%), 4 dari Synecdoche (14%), 2 dari Metonymy (7%), 6 dari Hiperbola (22%),dan 2 dari Irony (10%). Ada dua makna yang ditemukan dari tujuh jenis makna, yaitu maknakonseptual dan makna konotatif.

Abstract

This study relates the discussion of discourse markers to their functions from a social context. It aims to identify discourse markers and analyze their function to construct a social situation in Steve Jobs’ speech delivered at Stanford Commencement Address. To analyze the data in this study, the researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. This study showed that the dominant discourse markers used were connective, followed by cause result, temporal adverb, and marker of response, respectively, in which the last marker was the least used. Furthermore, all discourse markers functioned to gain coherent message delivery in the speech by considering the “setting and scene," "participants," "ends,” “act sequence,” “key,” “instrumentalities,” “norms of interaction,” and “genre,” all of which were shortened in the acronym of “speaking.”  Finally, based on its social situation, the present study is expected to broaden the understanding of discourse markers in a particular text.

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to identify the types of figurative language and analyzed the meaning of the figurative language used in Ellie Goulding’s song lyrics. The data were analyzed based on the theory from Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963). Used to identify the types of figurative language and theory proposed by Leech (1974). The method used in collecting the data was observation method. The result show there are 5 types of figurative language used in the song lyrics of Ellie Goulding’s album “Brightest Blue”. They are; simile, metaphor, Personification, Synecdoche and Hyperbole. There were found 19 sentences identified using those seven types of figurative language such as: 10 of simile (47,61%), 1 of metaphor (4,76%), 1 metaphor (4,76%), 1 personification (4,76%), 3 of Synecdoche (14,28%), 1 of Metonymy (4,76%), 4 of Hyperbole (19,047%) 1 of Allusion (4,76). The result show there are two types of meaning used in the song lyrics of Ellie Goulding’s album “Brightest Blue”, such are; connotative meaning, conceptual meaning and affective meaning It can be in dictated that the dominant type of figurative language in the song lyrics is hyperbole. The meaning of figurative language is also stated clearly.

Abstract

This research is an analysis of the types of onomatopoeia in "One-Piece" manga. This research aims to educate readers about the fact that not all comics from around the world use the same word and that each comic from each country uses a unique one. This research uses descriptive qualitative approaches to analyze data to identify issues with the use of the word onomatopeia present in one-piece comics based on the theory of types by Elizabeth (2013), and both formal and informal methods are used to present the findings. Observation and documentation methods were used in this research which conducted 4 techniques in collecting the data, they are: watching, note-taking, selecting, and classifying. The results of this research show that there is a significant cultural variation in the way the word is used in comics, and each culture has a different perception of these sounds.
