Abstract

Directive is one type of illocutionary act usually used by the speaker to get the hearer to do something. This study discusses the types of directive illocutionary act found in Moana movie and followed by directive illocutionary act. This study used the theory by Kreidler (1998: 189-192) to discuss types of directive illocutionary act and used theory by Leech (1993: 104) to discuss the functions of directive illocutionary act. This study used the documentation method to collect the data and the method used in analyzing data was qualitative. In presenting the finding used formal and informal method. This study found 40 data of directive illocutionary act classified into 11 data or 27% of command, 15 data or 37,5% of request, 14 data or 35% of suggestion and all the data, including the directive function illocutionary act such as; competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. In the command type there are three functions that found based on the utterance which is collaborative, competitive, and conflictive. For the request type followed by four functions which are, competitive, convivial, collaborative and conflictive. The last type of directive illocutionary act is the suggestion, there are three functions also found in the utterance of Moana movie which is collaborative, convivial, and conflictive.

Abstract

This article discusses the hyperbole figure used in the lyrics of Chainsmokers songs. The author assumes that the hyperbole figurative language in the song lyrics is used to attract song lovers to be interested in buying original, not pirated, CD tapes. The article, entitled "Hyperbola language used in chainsmokers' songs, aims to identify the types and find the meaning of the hyperbola language in the song. To analyze the data, the main theory used in this article is the figurative language theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger 1963, the theory of meaning proposed by Leech 1981 and some of another supporting theory. This article uses qualitative methods to provide a clear picture of the problems identified. Descriptive study in textual analysis is applied to describe the types and meanings of hyperbolic figures in the song lyric. The data is taken from several editions of the song released in 2017-2020.

Abstract

In order to analyze further regarding to the phenomenon of flouting maxim in conversation, this study is concerned to describe the types of conversational maxim flouted by the main characters in Green Book movie through the theory of Cooperative Principle (Grice, 1975). In conducting this study, the descriptive qualitative approach is used to analyze the data. The study has found that all types of conversational maxim are flouted by the main characters in the movie, with the flouting maxim of quantity as the most dominant type in which as many as 31 (38,75%) occurences, followed by the flouting maxim of relation with 28 (35%) occurences. As for the lower ranks in the number of occurences consist of the flouting maxim of quality with 12 (15%) occurences and finally, the flouting maxim of manner with 9 (11,25%) occurences as the least dominant type of flouting maxim found in the movie. Abstract

This study was about the onomatopoeia words in Wonder Woman Comic. Onomatopoeia is a sound that replicate the sound made by an entity in everyday life. The aims of this study are to find out the types of onomatopoeia words in comic. The data source were taken from the comic entitled Wonder Woman. This study used the theory of onomatopoeia by Elizabeth (2013) to find out the types of onomatopoeia words and also the meaning of onomatopoeia in the comic Wonder Woman. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by using observation method and the steps are reading the comic, identifying the onomatopoeia words and taking note the onomatopoeia words. The result of this study show that the types of onomatopoeia that occurred in this comic can be divided into four namely, mechanical, Fast Motion, Animal and Fighting. There are 49 onomatopoeia found in the comic Wonder Woman, and fighting dominantly occurs with 23 data or 46.9% and followed by mechanical 12 data or 24.6%, then animal 8 data or 16.3% and fast motion 6 data or 12.2%. The meaning of onomatopoeia can be classified into contextual and lexical meaning.

Abstract

This study concerned with the code switching phenomenon involving Indonesian-English found in Pamungkas’ speech during podcast talks or interviews. The study aims to analyze the reasons and classify the most and least type of the code switching by Pamungkas as the interviewees in the four podcast episodes on Spotify. Quantitative and qualitative method were used in this study. The data were analyzed according to theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) about seven reasons of code switching. The result of this study showed there are 78 code switching and all reasons from the theory were found. Based on the finding, expressing group identity was the dominant reason with 28 (35,89%) data, followed by 22 (28,21%) data of talking about particular topic, 11 (14,11%) data of interjection, 7 (8,97%) data of being emphatic about something, 6 (7,70%) data of repetition used for clarification, and 3 (3,84%) data of quoting somebody else. Meanwhile, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor was only represented by 1 (1,28%) data, found in those four podcast episodes uttered by Pamungkas as the interviewees.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out the types of figurative language in Passenger’s song lyric in Runaway album, and to analyze the meaning of figurative language in Passenger’s song lyric in Runaway album. The writer used the theory from Arp & Perrine (1991) to identify the types of figurative language and the theory from Leech (1981) to analyze the meaning of figurative language. The result of this study showed that are 6 types of figurative language found in Passenger’s song lyric in Runaway album. There is personification, metaphor, imagery, simile, symbol, and overstatement. The writer found simile is 9 data or 30%, the second types of figurative language is metaphor with total of number 6 data or 20%, imagery category with 3 data or 10%, there is also personification with 4 data or 13.3%, symbol category with 4 data or 13.3%, and the last on is overstatement with 4 data or 13.3%.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the syntactic functions of derivational suffixes forming adjectives with reference to user reviews of M.A.C Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation on Ulta Beauty’s Official Website. In collecting the data, the library research method was applied and supported by note taking techniques. The data findings were analyzed through a descriptive qualitative method in which, to begin with, the data were presented in the form of tree a diagram to analyze the syntactic functions. Furthermore, the analysis is served along with an explanation. In presenting the data, both formal and informal methods were applied. Formally, the data were served in form of a tree diagram and table, then further analysis was described informally. The result shows that from 73 total findings, three syntactic functions of adjectives were found, namely attributive with 29 occurrences (39,73%), predicative with 42 occurrences (57,53%), and postpositive with 2 occurrences (2,74%).

Abstract

This study analyzes a strong desire to become other Gender of Dean’s Portrayal in the novel Between Perfect and Real. The data was taken from a novel entitled Between Perfect and Real, which is monologue and dialog. This study analyzes the strong desire to be of the other gender of the main character named “Dean Foster.” The study uses the descriptive-qualitative method to analyze the data. The result of the study is presented in a formal and informal method. The library research method is used as the technique for collecting data. This study uses two main theories to analyze the data. The first leading theory is a diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders proposed by the American Psychiatric Association (2013) used to find out the strong desire to be of the other gender of Dean’s. The second leading theory is the Method of Characterization proposed by Kenny (1966), used to analyze how the writer presented the strong desire to become other gender Dean in Between Perfect and Real novel. This study obtained 18 data relating to the strong desire to be of the other gender experienced by Dean.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the meaning of hyperbole used in song lyrics in the Ambitions album from ONE OK ROCK. Hyperbole is used to exaggerate the actual reality contained in the lyrics of the song. The data in this research are presented descriptively. To collect data, this research used observation and note-taking techniques. The data is taken from song lyrics in Ambitions album by One Ok Rock. In analyzing the data, the writer uses the figurative language theory proposed by Abrams (1999), and the meaning theory proposed by Leech (1981). The results showed that there were ten hyperboles found in the song lyrics. The meaning found based on the lyrics with hyperbole consists of two kinds, namely connotative and affective.

Abstract

This qualitative research aims to find out and analyze depression symptoms of Laney Brooks on dialog I Smile Back movie. This research focus on analyzing one of four type bipolar disease episodes it called depression on the main character named Laney Brooks. The research methods used in this research are descriptive qualitative methods and library research methods and also observation method was used to get the data for this study by watching I Smile Back Movie and also using a note-taking technique to identify, and classify the data contains depression symptoms of Laney Brooks on dialog. NAMI (National Alliance Mental Illness) and Analyze Fiction by Kenney, W. P. (1966) theory has been applied in this research. The final result shows that Laney Brooks' depression symptoms are indicated by symptoms such as changes in appetite or weight, concentration and memory problems, irritability, and feelings of worthless or guilt. The symptoms of depression are shown by Laney through her dialogue. Keywords: Bipolar disorder, Depression, Dialogue, Movie.
