Abstract

This study focuses on gender language patterns within sociolinguistic, analyzing the women and men language features used by the two main characters in “The Idea of You” movie by Robinne Lee. The aim is to identify and describe the women and men language features reflected in the dialogues from two main characters. A descriptive qualitative method was conducted to analyze the data, which was sourced from the interactions between the two characters. The observation method was utilized to collect the data, and two theories were applied: Lakoff (1975) to identify women language features whereas to identify the men language features proposed from Coates’s theory (2004). The findings revealed nine out of ten features were present by the two main characters, with the exception of precise color terms. All five features of men language features were also identified. Mostly, intensifier is the most frequently used women language features, reflecting how the main characters communicate more expressively. In contrast, command and directives were the dominant men language features that employed by the two main characters, revealing their tendency to assert control and direct actions in their interactions.

Abstract

English is generally taught as a subject in schools with the aim of basic communication and honing the 4 language skills (listening, reading, writing, and speaking) in English with certain limitations. In improving students' ability to master English language skills, teachers can use strategies or methods in learning English. One of the methods used in English learning is NHT. This community service program aims at implementing the NHT strategy in improving the 4 language skills. The method carried out in this program is an implementation and training method conducted by some steps: observation, preparation, and practice. The result has shown that the program has been conducted successfully with the enthusiasm and participation of all students in completing all tasks in SD N 4 Cemagi. Besides that, the program has a heartwarming response from the teachers, parents, and Cemagi residences.

Abstract

Language is said to be something that is obligatory in communicating for humans. Without a proper communication, relationship between human beings would never run smoothly. The area of this phenomenon is commonly called pragmatics and one major theory that has been effective for analysis is Speech Act Theory. This study is aimed to answer the research problems, which comprise: (1) to find out types of directive illocutionary act are used by the main characters in the Maleficent movie and (2) to identify function of directive illocutionary act used by the main characters in the Maleficent movie. The data in this research was the Maleficent movie and analyzed by applying illocutionary acts theory proposed by Searle (1979) and Leech (1983) theory of illocutionary functions to analyze the goal. This study used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data and quantitative method to find out about the frequency of type that implied in the Maleficent movie. The finding shows that there are four types of directive illocutionary act which used by the main characters in the Maleficent movie, they are: asking act (50%), commanding act (30%), requiring act (10%) and telling act (10%)

Abstract

This research entitled An Analysis of Person Deixis of Maroon 5’s Red Pill Blues Album. Deixis is an expression in language that used to point who, where, and when that depend on the context. The objectives in this research are 1). to find out and identify types of deixis in the song lyrics of Maroon 5’s Red Pill Blues Album 2). to analyze context of deixis in the song lyrics of Maroon 5’s Red Pill Blues Album. Documentation method is used in collected the data using listening, reading and note taking techniques. Qualitative method is used to analyze the data by using descriptive word for explaining the data. The result of this research shows that all types of deixis found in the song lyrics of Maroon 5’s Red Pill Blues album which are person deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, social deixis and discourse deixis.. This research found that there are 321 data found of person deixis with percentage of 69%, 95 data found of temporal deixis with percentage of 20.3%, 28 data found of discourse deixis with percentage of 5.9%, 16 data found of spatial deixis with percentage of 3.4% and 7 data found of social deixis with percentage of 1.4%.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the kinds of figurative languages used in the chosen song lyrics of Richard Marx and to examine the meanings of figurative languages in the song lyrics of Richard Marx. Several song lyrics from Richard Marx that were randomly taken are the data base of this analysis. In the analysis of data from this report, descriptive and qualitative methods were used. The theory of Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963: 367) studied the types of figurative languages and also the accepted theory of meaning proposed by Leech (1981: 16) will be analyzed in the selected song lyrics of Richard Marx to explain the meaning of figurative language. The researcher assumes, after the study has been finished, that the chosen song lyrics of Richard Marx consist of 20 lyrics that used figurative language. Therefore, it was found 7 types of figurative language, there are simile (16, 67%), metaphor (5, 56%), personification (19, 44%), irony (2, 78%), hyperbole (47, 22%), synecdoche (2, 78%) and metonymy (2, 78).

Abstract

The aims of this research are to describe the types of directive illocutionary acts function in Fifty Shades Freed novel and to find out the types, which is mostly used in this novel. This is descriptive qualitative research. Observation was used in collecting the data. There were some steps in collecting the data: read the novel several times to understand the plot and examined the dialogue to distinguish the types of directive illocutionary act function found in the novel. The researcher applied Searle (1979) to analyze the data. The result of the research shows that there are 39 utterances containing directive illocutionary acts function. The data were classified into four; ordering (21), forbidding (1), requesting (4), suggesting (1), and asking (11). Of the total 39 directive illocutionary acts function, ordering are the most used type of directive illocutionary acts function because the character mostly expressed their utterances by ordering.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of flouting maxims and to know what the most dominant types of flouting maxims performed by the characters in the Escape Room movie is. The researcher used the theory proposed by Grice in his book Logic in Conversation (1975) to analyze the types of flouting maxims in the Escape Room movie. The method that used in this research is descriptive qualitative research. Through the findings of the analysis, there were 24 data found. Those are: Flouting Maxim of Quantity 8 data (33%), Flouting Maxim of Quality and Flouting Maxim of Relevance rarely appeared with same frequently 6 data (25%) and Flouting Maxim of Manner 4 data (17%). From those forms, Flouting Maxim of Quantity has the highest occurrences used among others.

Abstract

This study entitled An Analysis of Slang Word in Song Lyrics by Travis Scott on Astroworld Album is intended to find out the types of slang word that used in Song Lyrics by Travis Scott. The analysis concerns with the Slang words that occur in Song Lyrics on Astroworld Album. This study used qualitative technique and Descriptive study in textual analysis to elaborate the various types that occur in song lyrics on Astroworld Album. Theory used in this analysis is Theory by Yule (1986) which to find out the kinds or type of slang word that occurs in the song lyric by Travis Scott on Astroworld album. The study concludes that the clipping slang words are mostly used and the least type of slang word used in the Astroworld album is derivation, borrowing and back formation in the song lyrics on Astroworld Album.

Abstract

The film Friends with Benefits is the data source in this study. In collecting the data through library research by viewing films, reading scripts, and taking notes. In analyzing the data, the qualitative method is used and presented descriptively based on the theory adopted in this study. The theory used in this study is the theory of literature proposed by Wellek and Warren (1949) about characterization. The results of this study showed that only three characterization dimensions were analyzed. In presenting these dimensions, this study presents an overview and/or dialogue from the film. There are three dimensions of the characterization of the main character analyzed in this study: physiological, sociological, and psychological. These physical and psychological characteristics combine to build up Jamie Rellis and Dylan Harper, a romantic person in the film Friends with Benefits.

Abstract

People speaking language differently, it can be influenced by some social factors. This research is intended to find out the kinds of speech style and the variables that influencing the characters of “Birds of Prey” in speaking a language. There are two aims of this study, those are: 1) To find out the kinds of speech style are used in “Birds of Prey” movie, 2) To find out the dominant style used by the character in “Birds of Prey” movie. This research is using descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data with the theory proposed by Joos (1967) to divine the style of speech style. The result of the data was presented in both formal and informal method in finding presentation. The formal method was applied through table and the informal method was applied through word explanation to explain which type of an utterance belongs to. The result of this study showed there are 266 utterances that categorized into type of speech style, there are 4 types of speech style that grouped into: 17 formal styles, 56 consultative styles, 180 casual style and 13 intimate styles with casual style as the dominant style to be used by the character according to the movie’s rating and genre.
