Abstract

Purpose: This community service initiative aimed to promote the use of traditional herbal medicine for treating hypertension and diabetes mellitus among residents of Empas Village, Melak District, West Kutai Regency. The program sought to enhance public awareness of the benefits of herbal medicine as a safer alternative to generic pharmaceuticals. As part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage, herbal medicines offer natural ingredients with minimal side effects that can provide significant health benefits. Methodology/approach: The activity comprised educational sessions focused on herbal medicine recipes for managing hypertension and diabetes. These sessions were conducted at the local posyandu (integrated health post) with 30 community participants present. Results: The survey data revealed a high prevalence of hypertension and diabetes within the village. Through the distribution of informational pamphlets and systematic educational presentations, participants gained an improved understanding of the therapeutic potential of local medicinal plants. Conclusion: Education on the use of traditional herbal medicine has succeeded in increasing public knowledge and awareness regarding the potential of herbal medicine as a viable alternative treatment for hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Limitations: The participants were limited to only Empas villagers with a total of 30 persons. Contribution: This community service positively impacted villagers by promoting the use of medicinal plants, potentially improving their overall quality of life.

Abstract

Abstrak: Masalah penjamah kantin Universitas Mulawarman banyak yang tidak memiliki sertifikat hygiene sanitasi makanan dan minuman padahal itu merupakan syarat jika mau mendirikan jasa makanan dan minuman salah satu penanggung jawabnya harus mempunyai sertifikat dari dinas yang berwenang. Tujuan dilaksanakan pengabdian ini adalah memberikan kursus hygiene sanitasi makanan pada penjamah kantin Unmul untuk meningkatkan kebersihan dan kualitas makanan di kantin unmul menjadi lebih baik. Pengabdian ini menggunakan metode pelatihan hygiene sanitasi makanan dan minuman kepada penjamah makanan di kantin Universitas Mulawarman sebelum dilakukan pelatihan diberikan pretest dan sesudah pelatihan diberikan posttest yang terdiri dari 10 pertanyaan pilihan ganda terkait dengan materi pelatihan. Mitra pendukung pengabdian ini adalah Dinas Kesehatan Kota Samarinda selaku pemateri 1 team yang terdiri dari 3 orang dan mitra peserta penjamah makanan kantin Unmul sebanyak 10 orang. Hasil sudah terlaksana pengabdian dengan baik dan lancar terjadi peningkatan skor pengetahuan 25,6%.Abstract: Food and beverage sanitation hygiene certificate even though it is a requirement if you want to establish a food and beverage service, one of the persons in charge must have a certificate from the authorized agency. The purpose of this service is to provide food sanitation hygiene courses to Unmul canteen handlers to improve the cleanliness and quality of food in the Unmul canteen for the better. This service uses a food and beverage sanitation hygiene training method to food handlers in the canteen of Mulawarman University before the training is given a pretest and after the training is given a posttest consisting of 10 multiple-choice questions related to the training material.this service partner is the Samarinda City Health Office as the speaker of 1 team consisting of 3 people and Unmul canteen food handlers as many as 10 people. The results have been carried out well and there has been an increase in knowledge score of 25.6%.

Abstract

AbstrakSekolah menjadi institusi pendidikan yang bertanggung jawab dalam menciptakan lingkungan yang mendukung kesehatan siswa, baik secara fisik, mental, dan sosial. Namun, di Kota Samarinda, banyak sekolah dasar yang menghadapi berbagai tantangan, seperti fasilitas sanitasi yang tidak memadai, pengelolaan limbah yang buruk, dan kurangnya pendidikan kesehatan. Data menunjukkan bahwa dari 227 SD yang ada, hanya 8,37% yang meraih penghargaan adiwiyata, yang mana menunjukkan masih rendahnya optimalisasi program sekolah sehat berbasis lingkungan. Guru UKS memiliki peran strategis dalam membina perilaku hidup bersih dan sehat. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan meningkatkan kapasitas guru UKS melalui pelatihan terpadu yang mencakup peningkatan pengetahuan, keterampilan, serta rencana penyusunan rencana sekolah sehat yang aplikatif dan berkelanjutan. Mitra dalam kegiatan adalah Dinas Pendidikan Kota Samarinda dengan peserta 72 guru UKS dari SD Negeri dan Swasta, yang mengalami tantangan dalam aspek perencanaan program dan keterbatasan SDM yang terlatih. Pelaksanaan kegiatan melalui tiga tahap, yaitu persiapan, pelaksanaan pelatihan (penyajian materi, pembagian booklet, dan diskusi), serta evaluasi menggunakan pre-test dan post-test. Materi yang diberikan meliputi konsep sekolah sehat, gizi seimbang, PHBS, kesehatan mental, dan mekanisme pelaporan kegiatan UKS. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan adanya peningkatan pengetahuan peserta sebesar 27,55% setelah pelatihan (p-value 0,000, uji Wilcoxon). Kegiatan ini juga menghasilkan modul pelatihan, panduan pelaporan UKS, serta penandatanganan kerja sama (MOA dan IA) antara Fakultas Kesehatan Masyarakat, Universitas Mulawarman dan Dinas Pendidikan Kota Samarinda. Secara keseluruhan, kegiatan ini efektif meningkatkan kompetensi guru UKS dan memperkuat kolaborasi lintas sektor dalam menciptakan sekolah yang sehat, aman, dan berkelanjutan, guna meningkatkan kuantitas sekolah dengan predikat adiwiyata. Kata kunci: sekolah sehat; Guru UKS; pelatihan; perilaku hidup bersih dan sehat (PHBS); sekolah dasar Abstract Schools play a crucial role in fostering students’ physical, mental, and social health by providing supportive learning environments. In Samarinda, many elementary schools still face significant obstacles such as inadequate sanitation, poor waste management, and limited health education. Data show that only 8.37% of the 227 elementary schools have received the Adiwiyata award, reflecting the low optimization of environment-based healthy school programs. UKS (school health unit) teachers hold a strategic role in promoting clean and healthy behavior among students. To address these issues, a community engagement program was initiated to improve the capacity of UKS teachers through integrated training that enhances knowledge, skills, and the ability to develop sustainable school health action plans. Conducted in partnership with the Samarinda City Education Office, the program engaged 72 UKS teachers from public and private elementary schools, many of whom face challenges in planning and lack access to trained human resources. The program was carried out in three phases: preparation, training (including material presentation, booklet distribution, and discussion), and evaluation using pre- and post-tests. The training covered topics such as healthy school concepts, balanced nutrition, clean and healthy living behaviors (PHBS), mental health, and UKS reporting mechanisms. Evaluation results revealed a 27.55% increase in participant knowledge (p-value = 0.000, Wilcoxon test). The initiative also produced a training module, a UKS reporting guide, and a formal collaboration agreement (MOA and IA) between the Faculty of Public Health, Mulawarman University, and the Samarinda City Education Office. Overall, the program successfully enhanced teacher competence and promoted cross-sector collaboration to support the development of healthier, safer, and more sustainable schools, with the long-term goal of increasing Adiwiyata recognition. Keywords: healthy school; school health unit (UKS); teacher training; clean and healthy living behavior (PHBS); elementary school
