Abstract

SARS-CoV-2 is a severe acute respiratory virus that causes Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19). Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, diet was undeniably important in immunity. In order to be more resilient during and after the pandemic, understanding the role of vitamins is crucial. This review aims to explore the role of vitamins in supporting the immune system and its correlation to COVID-19. The article search was done using five electronic databases (i.e., Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and PMC). Some of the keywords utilized in the literature search were “vitamin A and immunity” OR “vitamin B and immunity” OR “vitamin C and immunity” OR “vitamin D and immunity” OR “vitamin E and immunity”. A total of 51 articles was assessed in this literature review. Research finds vitamin A plays a role in both innate immune system cell function and humoral immunity by regulating, differentiating, and maturing immune system cells. Vitamin B complex primarily reduces inflammation by lowering serum C-reactive protein levels (CRP), while vitamin C strengthens epithelial barriers, phagocytes, T and B lymphocytes, and inflammatory mediators, to improve the immune system. Vitamin D acts as a mediator in the vitamin D receptor (VDR), an inner immune system component that regulates the humoral and adaptive immune systems through unique genetic transcriptions. Finally, vitamin E acts as an antioxidant, lowering the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS). In conclusion, all vitamins are essential in improving individual’s immune system that prevent from infectious diseases including COVID-19.

Abstract

Kecukupan gizi pada masa prakonsepsi akan menentukan output kelahiran anak dan pertumbuhan anak serta menunjang fungsi alat reproduksi agar dapat berperan optimal. Sayangnya banyak pasangan calon pengantin yang belum mengetahui pentingnya gizi prakonsepsi yang harus diterapkan sebelum ibu hamil. Tingginya permasalahan ibu selama masa kehamilan menunjukkan pentingnya gizi prakonsepsi dan dibutuhkan pendidikan gizi dan promosi kesehatan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan perilaku sehat dalam mempersiapkan kehamilan. Sebagai salah satu upaya menurunkan angka stunting, maka dibutuhkan peningkatan pengetahuan dan kapasitas pada remaja dan calon pengantin agar dapat mempersiapkan kehamilan yang sehat, salah satunya melalui kursus persiapan pra nikah. Penelitian dilakukan dengan mengembangkan media edukasi berbasis hybrid learning (kombinasi online dan offline). Penelitian ini berupa edukasi gizi yang didasarkan pada kontstruksi Health Belief Model pada remaja dan calon pengantin, khususnya untuk meningkatkan niat, sikap, norma subyektif dan perceived behavioral control terhadap penerapan gizi prakonsepsi. Sebelum dan sesudah dilakukan edukasi, dilakukan pretest dan posttest untuk mengukur peningkatan pengetahuan peserta. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, diketahui edukasi gizi prakonsepsi pada kursus persiapan pernikahan secara offline dapat meningkatkan secara signifikan pengetahuan peserta (p<0,001) karena proses interaksi dua arah yang berjalan dengan lebih baik. Untuk itu disarankan pemberian edukasi gizi prakonsepsi pada kursus persiapan pernikahan dapat diberikan secara offline.

Abstract

In developing countries, low birth weight (LBW) is still considered a major public health problem among infants. The national prevalence of LBW in Indonesia is quite high and ranked 6th for LBW cases among countries in Southeast Asia. This paper aimed to study the determinant of LBW especially in the urban area of Indonesia due to the wide availability of household survey data and the limited research of LBW with a large number of samples. This study used the latest data from the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS). A bivariate analysis using the Chi-square test and a multivariate analysis tested by logistic regression was done. As many as 7,321 women of childbearing age-aged 15-49 years from the urban areas were selected as the final sample. A number of 6.7% of infants were born with LBW with a mean birth weight of 3,677 grams. This study showed a significant relationship between birth interval and maternal complication and LBW (OR:0.74; OR:2.21). Women’s level of education also appeared to be significantly related to LBW (OR:0.82).  The conclusion of the study was that birth interval, maternal complications, and mother’s education level were closely related to LBW. Therefore, collaboration between health services, health centers, government sectors, and academicians is needed to provide standard ANC services followed by routine maternal health education is expected to reduce LBW numbers in urban areas of Indonesia.

Abstract

Introduction: Fulfilling the basic needs of children (education, love and care) can influence the growth and development of children in a positive direction. This study was aimed to analyze the relationship between the patterns of education, love, and care given by mothers with the growth and development of children at 3-5 years in the Mulyorejo Sub-District, Surabaya. Method: This study was cross-sectional design with 72 children aged 3-5 years old as sample and   selected using simple random sampling. The data were collected from primary sources by interviewing mothers of children about her knowledge and the pattern of education, love, and care, measuring children’s anthropometry and interviewing Pre-Screening Questionnaire Test with children. The data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test. Result: showed there was no relationship between education pattern (p = 0.122) and love pattern (p = 0.56) with child development. There was a correlation between consumption pattern (as a care pattern) of animal side dish with weight for age (p = 0.041; OR = -0.242), fruit consumption with weight for age (p = 0.010; OR = -0.301), and fruit consumption with weight for height (p = 0.025; OR = -0.264). Conclusion: Although there is no relationship between education and love patterns with child  development, in the care pattern, the consumption pattern of animal and fruit side dishes is proven to be related to the growth of children.

Abstract

COVID-19 has become a pandemic in the last 3 years worldwide and cases cause high mortality and morbidity. To reduce COVID-19 infection, we need to keep our immune system healthy. Several nutrients have been shown to have specific abilities to increase the power of the immune system, but their use in the treatment of COVID-19 is still being debated. This review aims to determine the role of minerals and synbiotics in increasing immunity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specific minerals such as zinc, selenium, iron and copper have promising potential to treat COVID-19 by reducing clinical impact, markers of inflammation, and improving immunological biomarkers. In addition to increasing mineral intake, maintaining a healthy immune system can also be done by improving the health of the gut microbiota. One of the therapies that is considered to have a positive impact on handling COVID-19 is using synbiotics (a combination of prebiotics and probiotics). However, the safety and efficacy of mineral and synbiotic supplementation in COVID-19 patients as adjunctive therapy still requires further research. Minerals and synbiotics can help boost the immune system and reduce symptoms during a COVID-19 infection.

Abstract

The latest COVID-19 pandemic has taught the importance of nutrition and immunity to prevent diseases, in which case the fatality rate exceeded 2.58%. Immunity is believed to be one of the critical efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This is, for sure, inseparable from nutritional intake, exercise, and environmental factors. However, that needed to be better understood by many people. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of online-based nutrition education in increasing knowledge and self-efficacy to maintain a balanced nutritional intake and implement hygiene. Online-based nutrition education was done using video conference by Zoom conference and text-based education methods using Telegram. Each session is held for approximately two hours. Samples were all collected voluntarily, comprising an adult population aged 19 – 5 . Knowledge and self-efficacy were measured using a structured questionnaire. In total, 217 samples were recruited. 92.2% of participants were female, the average age was 29 ± 10.04, 34.1% worked as civil servants, and the majority, 52.1%, came from East Java. Education with the digital learning method succeeded in increasing nutritional knowledge from a score of 55.9 to 91.8 (p<0.000) and significantly increasing self-efficacy of consuming balanced-nutritious food and self-efficacy of a clean and healthy lifestyle (p<0.000). In conclusion, online-based nutrition education proved effective in increasing knowledge and self-efficacy. Hence, program duplication with a broader range of subjects can be done nationally.

Abstract

Junior football players often encounter difficulties in managing their sleep and dietary patterns. At the same time, they need to balance their time between scheduled school activities and training sessions. This dual responsibility can sometimes make junior athletes susceptible to sleep and dietary issues, potentially affecting their performance. This study aimed to examine the sleep patterns and dietary intake of football players across different age groups at a football club in East Java. We compared the sleep patterns and dietary intake of players in the U18 (n=18), U16 (n=13), and U14 (n=8) categories. Data were collected through interviews using validated questionnaires. Dietary intake was assessed with a semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Sleeping quality and quantity were assessed using structured questionnaire adapted from Pittsburgh Sleeping Quality Index (PSQI). The results showed no statistically significant differences in the quality or quantity of sleep across all groups (p > 0.05). However, a trend suggested that U18 players had slightly better sleep quality and quantity compared to the other groups. In contrast, the U18 group demonstrated significantly lower energy intake than the other groups (p = 0.000). The U16 group exhibited the best energy and nutrient intake among all age categories. In conclusion, older and younger player groups tend to overlook dietary patterns, while their sleep patterns remain relatively consistent.

Abstract

Background: The Tengger Tribe strongly upholds traditional and cultural aspects in their daily lives, particularly in the preparation of food offerings that carry deep philosophical meanings. In addition to their cultural significance, these foods also possess nutritional content and value from the perspective of the Tengger Tribe. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the philosophy, nutritional content, and food value of offerings served in the traditional ceremonies of the Tengger Tribe. Methods: This exploratory qualitative study was conducted in Wonokitri Village, Tosari District, Pasuruan Regency, East Java, Indonesia. The research informants included the village head, traditional leaders, religious leaders, and community leaders of the Tengger Tribe. The research variables encompassed the philosophy of food, its nutritional content, and its cultural significance in the traditional ceremonies of the Tengger Tribe. Results: The study found that traditional ceremonies are routinely performed, including Yadna Kasada, Karo, Unan-Unan, Pujan Mubeng, and Barikan. Additionally, individual ceremonies such as Entas-Entas, Tugel Kuncung, Among-Among, and weddings are also significant. Each ceremony features specific food offerings, primarily jadah, pasung, pepes, and red-and-white jenang, which are rich in carbohydrates and have a distinct sweet taste. The philosophy behind these offerings has been passed down through generations. Conclusions: The Tengger Tribe remains deeply committed to their traditional ceremonies. Food offerings in these ceremonies are an inherited tradition with profound philosophical meanings, and their cultural and nutritional value continues to be upheld, ensuring their sustainability. The primary foods used in these ceremonies are traditional cakes, which are high in carbohydrates.

Abstract

Background: Overweight and obesity are growing concerns in developing countries, including Indonesia. Excessive food intake and lack of physical activity are major contributing factors to this issue. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the relationship between physical activity levels, dietary patterns, and nutritional status among adolescents living in rural and urban areas. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 261 adolescents (120 males, 141 females) aged 12–14 years from East Java, Indonesia. Physical activity was assessed using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children (PAQ-C), while dietary intake was measured using daily recall and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Nutritional status was determined based on BMI-for-age Z-scores. Results: More than 20% of adolescents were overweight (Z-score > 2), with a prevalence of 21% in rural areas and 31% in urban areas. Urban adolescents consumed more sugary drinks, had longer screen time, and slept less than their rural counterparts (p-value<0.05). Overall physical activity levels were significantly higher among rural adolescents. Key risk factors for overweight status included sugary drink consumption (OR 2.32), high-fat food intake (OR 1.61), low physical activity (OR 0.09), and prolonged screen time (OR 1.21). Conclusions: Differences in lifestyle between rural and urban adolescents impact their nutritional status. Targeted interventions to promote physical activity and reduce sugary drink consumption, especially in urban areas, are crucial for preventing overweight and improving adolescent health.

Abstract

Background: Stunting and underweight are still nutritional problems in toddlers in the world. In 2022, the number of stunting and wasting in Indonesia is still high. There are many factors that influence undernutrition, both external and internal factors in the Tengger community. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between family characteristics, exclusive breastfeeding history, birth history, and birth attendants with the incidence of stunting and underweight in children under-5 of the Tengger Community. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study, which samples consisted of 100 mothers of children under-5 in the traditional territory of Tengger Community, taken by the random sampling technique. Data on family characteristics, exclusive breastfeeding, birth history and birth attendants were collected using questionnaires, the nutritional status of mothers and toddlers by measuring body weight and height directly, and food consumption patterns, compiled using the SQ-FFQ sheet and a food recall. Then, the chi-square analysis was utilized to scrutinize those data. Results: No significant associations between family characteristics, breastfeeding history, birth history, and birth attendant with nutritional status of under-fives were found in W/A and H/A (p-value>0.05). Only fat intake had a significant association with W/A in under-fives (p-value=0.03) of all nutrients. Conclusions: Energy and macronutrient intake were mostly in deficit, but only fat intake was associated with underweight. Therefore, macronutrient intake needs to be increased.
