Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to describe the level of mathematical ability that students have, especially in terms of reasoning. The students' reasoning ability was tested through story-based problems, as well as explaining its correlation with learning outcomes. This research uses a qualitative descriptive strategy that focuses on 10 students of class XI majoring in Mathematics and Natural Sciences at SMA Negeri 2 Bengkulu City. The data obtained in this study were obtained through observation, documentation, and conducting written tests on the students who were the focus of this study. The written test given amounted to 5 items of description questions guided by mathematical reasoning indicators. The data obtained from observations and written tests were analyzed through analytical steps, namely data selection, presentation, and finally drawing conclusions based on the data obtained. The results of the analysis show that there are 20% of students who have high, or low mathematical reasoning ability, so the remaining 60% are students with moderate mathematical reasoning ability. If correlated with student learning outcomes with an average of 44, then the reasoning ability of students at SMA 2 Bengkulu City is in the medium category.

Abstract

Connecting measurement concepts from informal to formal situations was challenging for students, specifically in understanding length and area measurements in elementary school. The use of cultural context in mathematics learning have been identified as a potential solution to address these challenges, although further exploration was required. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of mathematics learning designs outside classroom that integrate the culture of Bengkulu, Indonesia. A quasi-experimental design was used with a total of 83 fifth-grade students from two medium- and high-level elementary schools. The assessment instrument comprised six test questions and an observation sheet to record students’ activities. The results showed that students in high-level schools understood teacher instructions and worksheets more quickly, providing additional time for measuring practice. Conversely, students at medium-level schools tended to wait for instructions. The inferential analysis showed that integrating mathematics learning designs outside classroom in Bengkulu cultural context did not significantly increase the understanding of area and length measurements for students in medium-level schools but positively impacted those in high-level schools. Therefore, this method had the potential to improve understanding of other mathematical concepts, specifically when effectively implemented in schools with higher levels of understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to produce GeoGebra-based and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) worksheets (LKPD) that are valid, practical, and effective in improving the understanding of mathematical concepts among seventh-grade students at SMPN 17 Kota Bengkulu. The research employs development studies methods with preliminary and prototyping phases through formative evaluation, including self-evaluation, one-on-one, expert review, small group, and field tests. The results indicate that the LKPD is deemed valid based on expert reviews and one-on-one evaluations after revisions in content, construction, and language. The LKPD is also practical and easy for students to use, as evidenced by small group trials and student feedback. The effectiveness of the LKPD is demonstrated by an increase in the average mathematics scores and classical learning completeness, with 89.28% of students achieving scores above the minimum mastery criterion (KKM) ≥ 75. This indicates that the GeoGebra-based and PBL LKPD is effective in enhancing students' understanding of mathematical concepts
