Abstract

This study addresses the low level of students' mathematical literacy, which is partly attributed to the limited availability of teaching materials that explicitly support the development of mathematical literacy skills. The study aimed to develop a learning module based on Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) on the topic of social arithmetic that is valid, practical, and effective in improving students' mathematical literacy skills. The study employed a research and development approach using the 4-D model, consisting of the define, design, develop, and disseminate stages. The participants were seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Binjai. The results indicate that the developed module achieved a validity level of 93.48% (very valid) based on expert review and one-to-one evaluation, a practicality level of 86.01% (very practical) in the small-group trial and 86.96% (very practical) in the field test, and demonstrated effectiveness as reflected in the significant difference in posttest mean scores between the experimental and control classes. Furthermore, the improvement in students' mathematical literacy skills, measured using the N-gain index, showed a high category in the experimental class (0.7012) and a medium category in the control class (0.4029). These findings indicate that the RME-based learning module is suitable for use as instructional material to enhance students' mathematical literacy skills, as it fulfills the criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness.

Abstract

This study was motivated by students’ low mathematical problem-solving ability, which was caused by inappropriate learning approaches and the lack of teaching materials that support the development of mathematical problem-solving ability. This study aims to produce mathematics teaching materials based on a scientific approach that are valid and practical to facilitate students’ mathematical problem-solving ability in statistics material, specifically measures of central tendency, for Grade VIII SMP/MTs students. This research is development research using the Tessmer model, which consists of preliminary and formative evaluation stages, including self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one evaluation, and small group evaluation. The instruments used were validation sheets and student response questionnaires. The results of validation by three experts showed that the teaching materials had a very high level of validity, with an average score of 87.4%. Readability and attractiveness tests through one-to-one evaluation, as well as practicality tests through small group evaluation involving 11 students, resulted in an average response score of 89.25%, which was categorized as very practical. These findings show that the developed teaching materials are feasible to use and can support the development of students’ mathematical problem-solving ability. The contribution of this research lies in the explicit integration of the scientific approach into the structure of teaching materials to facilitate mathematical problem-solving ability. The implication of this research shows that developing teaching materials based on the scientific approach can be a strategic solution for improving the quality of mathematics learning at the junior high school level.

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning ability is an essential competency emphasized in the Merdeka Curriculum, particularly in the Learning Outcomes (CP) for Phase E, which requires students to understand, generalize, and prove mathematical concepts. However, various studies have shown that Indonesian students' mathematical reasoning skills remain relatively low, including in the topic of sequences and series. This study aims to analyze students’ errors in solving mathematical reasoning problems related to sequences and series in Grade 10, based on Nolting’s error theory. The research employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving 20 tenth-grade students from Senior High School 12 Pekanbaru. The research instrument consisted of four mathematical reasoning essay questions covering arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, adapted from Fadillah. The analysis revealed four types of student errors: Careless Errors (34.30%), Connection Errors (31.20%), Test-Taking Errors (21.80%), and Application Errors (17.50%). These errors were attributed to various factors, including cognitive factors such as lack of conceptual understanding and affective factors such as low learning motivation. The findings highlight the importance of teachers in analyzing student errors to help minimize learning difficulties in mathematics and improve the overall quality of mathematics instruction

Abstract

This study was motivated by students’ low mathematical reasoning ability, particularly in the geometry topic of the Pythagorean theorem. The 2022 PISA results also indicate that Indonesian students’ mathematical performance remains relatively low, partly due to learning practices that emphasize memorization and provide limited non-routine problems that support reasoning. Therefore, this study aimed to develop Pythagorean theorem worksheets based on Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) to facilitate students’ mathematical reasoning ability. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) design using the 4-D development model, consisting of define, design, develop, and disseminate stages. The product was developed for eighth-grade students and was validated by three expert validators. Product trials were conducted through one-to-one evaluation involving three students, a small group trial involving six students, and a field trial involving 34 students at SMPN 8 Pekanbaru. The instruments used were validation sheets and student practicality questionnaires. The results showed that the developed worksheets obtained an average validation score of 4.40, categorized as very valid. The practicality test obtained an average score of 3.48 in the small group trial and 3.48 in the field trial, both categorized as very practical. These findings indicate that the RME-based Pythagorean theorem worksheets are valid and practical for use as teaching materials to facilitate students’ mathematical reasoning ability.
