Abstract

The establishment of national park in customary region had aroused conflic since it had not incorporate traditional management system in its management system. The objectives of this research is to develop such policies for national park zonation that amalgamating the national-global interests for conservation on the one side and the customary community interests on the other side. Result shows that adaptation was needed toward the prevailing science-based ecologically-oriented regulation on zoning plan, so it would incorporate the community's custom in order to achieve effective management of national park. Appropriate and applicable zoning can be achieved through implementation of management mindset with customary people livelihood perspectives, zone establishment which give priority to the achievement of national park functions rather than the fulfillment of zone requirements, and adaptation of zone formation and criteria toward traditional land use as efforts to accommodate the interest of biodiversity conservation and customary people livelihood.

Abstract

Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus Desmarest 1822) is the rarest species among 5 species of rhinos in the world. Its distribution is currently limited only in Ujung Kulon National Park (UKNP), Indonesia. Due to the small population size and its limited distribution, it is listed as critically endangered species in the IUCN Redlist. The main objectives of this research were: 1) to identify the dominant habitat components that determine the presence of javan rhino in UKNP; 2) to analyze habitat suitability of javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus Desmarest 1822) in UKNP using geographical information system; and 3) to examine its habitat condition. Results of the research found eight components identified to be crucial for Javan rhino habitat and appropriate for spatial modelling of habitat suitability, of which four were the most dominant factors influencing the frequency of javan rhino presence. These four dominants factors were slope, distance from wallow sites, distance from rumpang (open area), and distance from beach.

Abstract

Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus Desmarest 1822) is one of world's rarest endangered species (IUCN 2008). Currently, their distribution is limited to Ujung Kulon National Park (UKNP) of Indonesia. Natural disasters, disease, poaching, encroachment, and competition are threats facing Javan rhino's population, hence creating pockets of habitats outside the UKNP was necessary and should be based on scientific studies of javan rhino utilization distribution and habitat selection in UKNP as the natural habitat. The objectives of the study were to determine the utilization distribution of Javan rhino and its habitat characteristics and determine javan rhino habitat selection within UKNP. The research indicated that Javan rhinos highest use of areas comprised of swampy shrub (w = 2.197) and shrub (w = 2.012), relatively open habitat (w = 4.233), flat area (w = 1.313) and slightly sloping areas (w = 1.007), lowland (w = 1.346), close to river (w = 1.087), close to road network (w = 1.395), close to coasts/beaches (w = 1.862), close to wallowing areas (w = 3.709), and close to rumpang (w = 3.783). The results suggested that javan rhino showed selection and preferences for its habitat.

Abstract

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is one of the fastest growing technologies. It is hard to resemble definitions of GIS, because it has such a broad application. Principally, it is combining technology and processing capabilities of map and its attributes. One of general definition is a system used to store, manipulate, analyze and display spatial data that has reference to the earth. In the early of its development, GIS is only used for digital mapping for the purposes of resource inventories, cadastral, planning, transportation and census, but by this time GIS has been widely used for modeling and decision making. Along with advances in GIS, remote sensing technology is also increasingly available with different levels of temporal and spatial resolution. Abstract

Conservation areas such as national parks became the last safe area for biodiversity in Indonesia, especially for orangutan, because they have permanent status, and other forest areas may change at any time. Currently, there have been tremendous numbers of land use changes in orangutan habitats such as the development of roads, large scale plantations, settlements, farming as well as logging.  However, the available national parks still offer secure places for orangutans. This research was conducted to study the impact of spatial land use policy on the habitat distribution of orangutans. A remote sensing technology was used to study the habitat distribution and suitability of orangutan in Betung Kerihun National Park (BKNP), Danau Sentarum National Park (DSNP) and a corridor which connects these 2 parks. Seven parameters have been observed to characterize the habitat of orangutans. Habitat suitability levels of three research sites i.e. BKNP, corridor, and DSNP were 53.72%, 42.94%, and 3.34% which is considered as high, moderate, and low level of habitat suitability, respectively. These results were obtained with 93.63% of validation.

Abstract

High rate of deforestation occurred in Sumatra Islands had been allegedly triggered by various factors. This study examined how the deforestation pattern was related to the typology of the area, as well as how the deforestation is being affected by many factors such as physical, biological, and socio-economic of the local community. The objective of this study was to formulate a spatial model of deforestation based on triggering factors within each typology in Sumatra Islands.  The typology classes were developed on the basis of socio-economic factors using the standardized-euclidean distance measure and the memberships of each cluster was determined using the furthest neighbor method. The logistic regression method was used for modeling and estimating the spatial distribution of deforestation. Two deforestation typologies were distinguished in this study, namely typology 1 (regencies/cities with low deforestation rate) and typology 2 (regencies/cities with high deforestation rate). The study found that growth rate of farm households could be used to assign each regencies or cities in Sumatra Islands into their corresponding typology. The resulted spatial model of deforestation from logistic regression analysis were logit (deforestation) = 1.355 + (0.012*total of farm households) – (0.08*elevation) – (0.019*distance from road) for typology 1 and logit (deforestation) = 1.714 + (0.007*total of farm households) – (0.021*slope) – (0.051*elevation) – (0.038* distance from road) + (0.039* distance from river) for typology 2, respectively. The accuracy test of deforestation model in 2000–2006 showed overall accuracy of  68.52% (typology 1) and 74.49% (typology 2), while model of deforestation in 2006–2012 showed overall accuracy of 65.37% (typology 1) and 72.24% (typology 2), respectively.

Abstract

Forestry sector is the biggest carbon emission contributor in Indonesia which is mainly caused by deforestation.  In Kalimantan island one of the largest island in Indonesia has a significant area of forest cover still can be found although an alarming rates deforestation is also exist. This study was purposed to established spatial model of deforestation in Kalimantan island. This information is expected to provide options to develop sustainable forest management in Kalimantan trought optimizing environment and socio-economic purposes. This study used time-series land cover data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (2000 – 2013) and is validated by SPOT 5/6 images in 2013. The spatial model of deforestation were developed using binary logistic. The results of logistic regression analysis obtained spatial model of deforestation in Kalimantan = 1.1480714 – (0.033262*slope) – (0.002242*elevation) – (0.000413*distance from forest edge) + (0.000045*Gross Regional Domestic Product). Validation test showed overall accuracy about 79.64% and 77.01% for models of deforestation in 2000–2006 and 2006–2013 respectively.

Abstract

Mining activities will reduce species diversity, whereas forest reclamation would restore the species diversity, which was previously a forested area. This research was conducted in PT Bukit Asam area, in 6 locations, and in natural forest, as a comparison. The objective of this research was identifying biodiversity of plants and birds in a reclamation area which had different planting years through an approach of diversity indices of vegetation and birds (H'), index of species similarity of plants and birds, and leaf area index (LAI). Research results showed that secondary succession occurred in the reclamation area. The value of plant diversity index in reclamation area of 1995 planting year exhibited diversity values which approached that of natural forest, except for undergrowth vegetation. Index of plant species similarity between reclamation area and natural forest did not show any presence of similar communities, but the reclamation area of 1995 planting year exhibited values of plant species similarity indices at all strata, ranging from undergrowth vegetation, seedlings, saplings, poles, and trees. Index of bird diversity in reclamation area of planting the year 1998 possessed the highest value and approached that of natural forest, namely 2.43. Reclamation area of 1998 planting year possessed the highest similarity index of bird species, namely 50%. Reclamation area of the planting year 1995 possessed LAI which approached natural forest, namely 1.89.  The older the planting year, the larger was the value of LAI, except for the disturbed reclamation area, namely reclamation area of 1996 planting year and reclamation area of 2001 planting year.

Abstract

Acacia nilotica is an invasive species in the Baluran National Park. The spread of A. nilotica is a serious threat that can disrupt the function of savanna ecosystems in providing food for herbivores and eventually led to a decrease in wildlife populations of herbivorous. The growth of A. nilotica invasive species is influenced by some environmental factors. In order to prevent the spread of A. nilotica, a model can be formed to prodict the species distribution based on the environmental factors namely generalized linear models. This research used the data from Siswoyo’s research in 2014, which consisted of environmental data and distribution of A. nilotica. The results showed that there were five environmental variables that significantly affect on the spread of A. nilotica invasive species. The variables included elevation, surface temperature, normalized difference vegetation index, normalized difference moisture index, and the distance from the river, with p-value less than 0.05. The accuracy of the prediction model on the spread of A. nilotica using GLM was 97.22% and the Area Under Curve (AUC) value was 0.981.

Abstract

The javan gibbon reintroduction program requires assessment of suitable habitat within release sites to assure the survival of released gibbons. We studied habitat suitability for javan gibbon beginning in April 2017, extending to June 2017 in the Mount Malabar Protected Forest (MMPF), West Java. The objectives of this study were to analyze the habitat suitability of the release site for javan gibbon in MMPF. Analysis of Geographical Information System (GIS) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) approach were used to obtain habitat suitability values. Habitat suitability variables measured are elevation, Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI), Bareness Soil Index (BSI), distance from the road, farming, settlement, and open field. We found suitability valued areas consisting of high suitability covered 2,009.23 ha (22.31%), moderate suitability covered 2,497.46 ha (27.73%), and low suitability covered 4.499,65 ha (49.96%), from a total area ± 8.894,47 ha in MMPF.
