Abstract

In this study, the performance of mesoporous ZSM-5 has been studied on the esterification of acetic acid (AA) with benzyl alcohol (BA). The mesoporous ZSM-5 catalyst has been synthesized with the variation of aging time i.e. 6, 12, and 24 hours at the same temperature, 70 °C. The cation exchange of Na-ZSM-5 to H-ZSM-5 was performed before the catalytic activity test. The acidity type and amount of solids were determined by FT-IR spectroscopy using pyridine as a probe molecule. The characterization by pyridine adsorption showed that at a higher mesoporous surface area, the number of Lewis acid was increased. The highest mesoporous surface area, Lewis, and Brönsted acid sites were obtained by sample which has the lowest crystallinity, i.e. 255.78 m2/g, 0.2732 mmol/g, and 0.20612 mmol/g, respectively. Influence of mesoporous volume was studied on the catalytic activity of the mesoporous ZSM-5 in the esterification reaction. Conversion of acetic acid in the esterification reaction for samples of    HZ-6, HZ-12, and HZ-24 were obtained by titration methods, i.e. 39.59, 36.39, and 32.90 %, respectively. Hence, the reaction temperature of 393 K, molar ratio 1:4 (AA:BA) and catalyst loading 5 % were selected as an optimum reaction parameters.

Abstract

Transesterification of used cooking oil was carried out over calcium oxide supported on mesoporous H-ZSM-5 prepared from kaolin as solid base catalysts. Solid basic catalysts investigated in this study were characterized by XRD, FTIR spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption-desorption techniques. The XRD pattern showed peaks corresponding to the CaO and mesoporous ZSM-5 in the sample. The peak intensity of the CaO increased as CaO loading in ZSM-5 was increased. The characterization based on FTIR spectroscopy revealed that CaO/H-ZSM-5 solids have functional groups characteristics of both CaO and mesoporous H-ZSM-5 which appeared in the band at around  550 cm-1 and 480 cm-1. The isotherm of N2 adsorption-desorption of CaO/H-ZSM-5 indicated the type IV isotherm with the presence of hysteresis loop. For the catalytic activity, the biodiesel yield using catalyst of 10 % CaO/HZSM-5 (100 %), 30 % CaO/HZSM-5 (100 %), 50 % CaO/HZSM-5 (100 %) were 24.34, 27.37, and 29.73 %, respectively. It also related with the basic active site, when loading CaO increased, the basic active site also increased.

Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of SrO.SiO2 were carried out. The rice hull ash was utilized as a source for SiO2. The SrO.SiO2 was prepared by sol-gel technique, and the ratios of SrO:SiO2 were      varied as 0:1, 1:0, 3:2, 2:4, and 2:7. The sol-gel was calcined at 800 oC for 4 hours. The result was    characterized using XRD and FTIR. The diffraction pattern shows that the diffraction angle was shifted, and the intensity of the main peaks was increased. This research indicated that the            crystallinity of SrO was improved at the higher SiO content. Further, a new peak was observed in the IR spectra at a wavenumber of 900 cm-1 indicating the appearance of new functional groups of the SrO.SiO2. The catalytic activity of SrO.SiO2 on transesterification reaction was optimized. The optimum condition was obtained at SrO.SiO2 of 2:7, reaction time of 30 minutes, reaction temperature of 65 oC, the amount of catalyst of 1 % w/v of reactants, and the biodiesel yield of 96.66 %.

Abstract

Santa Barbara Amorphous (SBA-15) containing iron oxide with a sucrose-modified in a heterogeneous reaction for degradation methylene blue (MB) successful synthesized used hydrothermal, ultrasonication, and wet impregnation method. SBA-15 is mesoporous silica that can easily serve as external and internal surfaces making it suitable for a wide range of applications. The structure and morphology of materials were characterized using Surface Area Analyzer (SAA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDX), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Iron oxide impregnated as a maghemite phase has an average size of 12 nm and well distributed on the SBA-15. After modified with sucrose the materials remaining stable, which has a two-dimensional hexagonal (p6mm) structure, high specific surface area, and large pore volume (up to 1.82 cm3.g−1). The degradation of MB was evaluated under visible light irradiation using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Catalytic activity showed efficiencies of 52.9; 70.2; and 21.1% for SBA-15, Fe2O3/SBA-15, and sucrose-modified Fe2O3/SBA-15 respectively. Sucrose-modified Fe2O3/SBA-15 has the lowest efficiency, which probably occurs due to the presence of pore-blocking and the formation of micropores on the external pore. The modification with sucrose has the advantage of producing a high surface area even though there is a catalytic center due to partial decomposition which causes a decrease in the efficiency of degradation of MB. All materials provide a high micro surface area so that they can be further adapted and can be widely applied to many potential applications as both catalyst support and an adsorbent. Abstract

Direct synthesis of ZSM-5 from Indonesian kaolin without calcination for the formation of metakaolin was done through the addition of an alkaline solution (sodium fluoride and sodium hydroxide) and the fusion using sodium hydroxide. Crystallization was conducted through hydrothermal method at 80 °C for four days. XRD diffractogram and FTIR spectra showed that the addition of sodium fluoride solution in the ratio Si/Al = 100 could produce highly crystalline ZSM-5, whereas the use of a sodium hydroxide solution and fusion process did not produce the crystalline ZSM-5.

Abstract

Photodegradation of organic pollutants depends significantly on the structure of metal oxide-based semiconductor photocatalysts. ZnO/ZSM-5 has shown the potential to significantly improve its photocatalytic efficiency for removing waterborne pollutants. ZnO/ZSM-5 has been reported to be an active catalyst for degrading methylene blue. These methods commonly involve various catalytic reactions, with the Langmuir-Hinshelwood process being used to describe the reaction kinetics. A kinetic study on the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue using ZnO/ZSM-5 was conducted under UV-LED lamp irradiation. ZnO/ZSM-5 was characterized using XRD, SEM, and N2 adsorption-desorption, and it was prepared via the impregnation method. The interaction between ZnO/ZSM-5 and methylene blue solutions over a period of 30 to 180 minutes was monitored using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue followed first-order rate kinetics. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) kinetic analysis revealed that the photocatalytic reaction constant (kc) was 4.207 L.mg-1. menit-1, and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood constant (K) was 261.509 L.mg-1.
