Abstract

Students' metacognitive awareness can be developed through Project-Based Learning (PjBL) implementation integrating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a significant aspect of the Kurikulum Merdeka. The purpose of this study is to improve metacognitive awareness through PjBL containing environment change material SDGs. The research method used was a quasi-experiment with a nonequivalent pretest-posttest control group design. The research study covers two groups, i.e., a control group and an experiment group of 36 students of class X of Senior High School respectively. The data-collecting technique used questionnaires and observation. The metacognitive awareness questionnaire adapts the Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) and a learning implementation observation sheet was used as a research instrument. The data analysis used was an Independent Sample T-Test and N-Gain trial. The Independent Sample T-Test result showed a significant 0.000 difference from the final questionnaire average score between the control and experiment classes. The experiment class students' metacognitive awareness obtained an average score of 84.14 with the highest category and 0.433 of the N-Gain trial score belongs to the medium category. This improvement was supported by the learning implementation result of teachers and students with a very good category. This study was expected to be able to give an effective contribution for teachers to improve the biology learning quality by emphasizing on the students’ metacognitive awareness improvement. The next research shall expand coverage by engaging more schools and considering other factors such as learning methods and students’ learning facility.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an instrument used to measure students' argumentation-based critical thinking skills (CTS) in microbiology practicum activities.  This study used a phased model for the development of tools, which consists of the stages of defining constructs and formulating objectives in the form of mapping aspects of the critical thinking skills and the microbiology concepts, formulating test item formats, constructing item questions, constructing scoring guidelines, evaluating by experts for content validation, pilot testing on students and analyzing the results. The test items were then analyzed to determine the validity, reliability, distinguishing features and degree of difficulty. The instrument produced in this study used 6 CTS indicators which were considered the most relevant to argumentation and laboratory activities, and consisted of 18 open-ended questions with 5 contexts. The results of expert validation show that the instrument is content valid and can be used for the next step. Furthermore, the results of the pilot test show that of the 18 questions that were tested, as many as 17 questions were declared valid and 1 question was corrected.  Overall the test questions were declared reliable. Thus, the results of this study recommend the use of questions on this test in studies that measure argumentation-based critical thinking skills in microbiology laboratory.

Abstract

Traditional Biotechnology Content as a Media in Engaging Students with System Thinking Skills. A study about how to engage students with System Thinking Skills as part of 21st century skills into Traditional Biotechnology content was conducted using Science-Technology-Religion-Engineering-Arts-Mathematics approach through one group pretest-posttest design. The study involved 43 students from 5th semester in one University determined purposively. Data were collected through system thinking test and interview format. After being collected through instruments mentioned before, data were then processed using percentage criterion n-gain on test and analyzed the result of student’s interview. Research results show 60.47% of n-gain (moderate) with the best achievement is in the ability to explain the function of each component, while the weakest achievement is in the ability to analyze the energy cycle. The result of the interview shows that the students are able to follow the lecture stages due to the repetitive and continuous assignment. The constraints found are in managing assignments within lecture time and less explored on religion aspects. Thus, Traditional Biotechnology content can facilitate students on system thinking skills.

Abstract

Abstract

The use of e-modules based on socio-scientific issues can be used as a way to provide argumentation and decision-making skills. This study aims to determine the use of e-modules based on socio-scientific issues in improving the argumentation and decision-making skills of high school students. This study used a quasi-experimental method. The research design used was the non-equivalent control group design. The sample in this study was class X students consisting of 132 people who were determined by purposive sampling technique. The research was conducted on two classes, namely the experimental class (learning using e-modules based on socio-scientific issues) and the control class (learning using modules not based on socio-scientific issues). The results showed that there was a significant difference in the mean between the experimental class and the control class in argumentation skills. The Mann-Whitney test on the value of argumentation skills shows a number (2-tailed = 0.000) < α (0.05) which means that there is a difference in the effectiveness of using socio-scientific issue-based e-modules with ordinary modules to improve students' argumentation skills. Then the results of the study showed that there was a significant difference in the average between the experimental class and the control class in student decision-making, shows that the Mann-Whitney test score on the value of argumentation skills shows the number (2-tailed = 0.000) < α (0.05) which means that there is a difference in the effectiveness of using socio-scientific issue-based e-modules with regular modules to improve student decision making. As for the criteria for the N-Gain score, the use of e-modules based on socio-scientific issues to improve students' argumentation skills is included in the moderate category (N-gain = 0.42), and the use of e-modules based on socio-scientific issues to improve student decision making is included in the medium category (N-gain = 0.56).

Abstract

Education in the 21st century requires innovation and creativity as well as skills including scientific literacy skills and numeracy literacy, one of which is experimental learning. Often experiments are constrained by insufficient learning time so that learning becomes less meaningful. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of applying the discovery model using the blended learning method using a simple volumetric gasometer in supporting scientific literacy. This research is an experimental research conducted in February 2023 at a Bandung high school. The research population was 432 students of class X at a senior high school in Bandung, which were divided into 12 classes. The sampling technique used simple random sampling so that 70 students were obtained consisting of 35 people from one control class and 35 people from one experimental class. The instrument used is a PISA question with the theme of innovation in alcoholic fermentation technology. Instruments were in the form of multiple choice questions and true wrong choice questions to measure scientific literacy profiles. Based on the results of the research, it was found that the learning outcomes of the discovery model by means of blended learning with practical methods using a simple volumetric gasometer can support scientific literacy.
